• Many candidates for each job
• Look for proxies that they know (network)
• Long process to hire
• Relatively easy to fire

The job search
• Looking for a job is a full time job!
• Let them find you
• Build your online persona (more on this on the next slide)
• Be proactive and persistent (it’s fine!)
• Tailor your messaging for each position
• Have a great resume (no picture, DOB, marital status)
• Don’t waste time on cover letters unless it is a requirement
• Aim wide – all you need is one
• 3-6 month process – sometimes more
• Leverage university career office
• Network X 3

Positioning yourself online
• Be present in all relevant mediums (LinkedIn, Monster, Careerbuilder,
Dice)
• Clean up your social media profiles
• Sign up for notifications
• Update your resume regularly (it jumps to the top)
• Customize for each application (military example)
• It will become automatic (Taleo – same forms for everyone)
• Have a clear narrative in your materials
• Take courses that are relevant for your target job

• Expect multiple interviews
• Do your research on the interviewer and company
• Focus on results that you achieved in each position
• Show progression in your career
• Know how to answer the tough questions
• Always have your own questions
• Ask about next steps
• Follow up. Follow up. Follow up!

Negotiations
• For full time positions – don’t ask about compensation until you get
an offer
• For contract positions – ask for the rate upfront
• It is ok to negotiate. They won’t take back the offer
• Research range
• Ask for other forms of compensation if money is an issue (401k,
signing bonus, annual bonus)
• You will need to get your background checked (including past pay)
and do a drug test for big US corporations
• You will not be able to change the terms once you accept

Work permits and visas
• Requirement for any job in the US
• H1B (233,000 applications in 2015 – only 25% will get it)
• F1/J1 – OPT (12 month / 17 month for STEM)
• O1 (artists / athletes)

The job search • Looking for a job is a full time job! • Let them find you • Build your online persona (more on this on the next slide) • Be proactive and persistent (it’s fine!) • Tailor your messaging for each position • Have a great resume (no picture, DOB, marital status) • Don’t waste time on cover letters unless it is a requirement • Aim wide – all you need is one • 3-6 month process – sometimes more • Leverage university career office • Network X 3 4©GradTrain, 2015

Positioning yourself online • Be present in all relevant mediums (LinkedIn, Monster, Careerbuilder, Dice) • Clean up your social media profiles • Sign up for notifications • Update your resume regularly (it jumps to the top) • Customize for each application (military example) • It will become automatic (Taleo – same forms for everyone) • Have a clear narrative in your materials • Take courses that are relevant for your target job 5©GradTrain, 2015

The interview process • Expect multiple interviews • Do your research on the interviewer and company • Focus on results that you achieved in each position • Show progression in your career • Know how to answer the tough questions • Always have your own questions • Ask about next steps • Follow up.   • 8. Negotiations • For full time positions – don’t ask about compensation until you get an offer • For contract positions – ask for the rate upfront • It is ok to negotiate. They won’t take back the offer • Research range • Ask for other forms of compensation if money is an issue (401k, signing bonus, annual bonus) • You will need to get your background checked (including past pay) and do a drug test for big US corporations • You will not be able to change the terms once you accept 8©GradTrain, 2015
