This document discusses human trafficking in Hawaii. It notes that thousands of females are trafficked for sex in Hawaii each year according to estimates. There are about 150 brothels on Oahu alone. Human trafficking negatively impacts businesses by allowing traffickers to have lower costs and prices without paying taxes. Several organizations are working to combat human trafficking in Hawaii, including The Hawaii Reporter which investigated labor trafficking of over 1,000 farm workers from Laos. Reported cases of human trafficking in Hawaii increased 35% from 2015 to 2016 due to greater awareness.

prices, creating unfair advantages in the business
world
8. “Traffickers also don’t pay taxes, but create an
enormous need for public spending on security,
border control, law enforcement and victim
rehabilitation.”
-Charles Krulak
10. “The Hawaii Reporter” led an award winning
investagation into labor trafficking, and found over
1000 farm workers trafficked from Laos

trafficking, a 35% jump over 2015. This is mostly
due to people spreading awareness of human
