3. Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
Originally I planned to do my story based around ‘little
red riding hood’, and I changed it to my own and
named it ‘little blue cap’. I have kept the age range the
same and the audience I have aimed the story at. The
characters I used are the same as what I planned
originally because they are similar to the little red
riding hood characters but I have changed around the
visuals of the different characters appearances so they
are not copying the original.
4. How well have you constructed your
images?
• I feel that I have constructed my images well, I made
sure my images were clear and simple. To do this I
used existing images and changed them into my own
image. A method I liked using was wrotoscoping , this
is because it’s easier to follow other images and it’s
easy to change the images around and re colour
them so I’m not copying the existing images. I made
sure my images are colourful so they stand out to the
audience. I also used shapes for the backgrounds and
warped them so they are in place.
5. I placed some images over other images to make them
look more 3D. It also makes the characters look like
they are stood in front of or behind objects. I have used
a clipping mask over the images to give them more
detail and so they don’t look too plain. Then I added a
colour overlay to the images so they fit in with each
other and the background.
6. How well have you used text to anchor
your images
• I placed my text in the spaces over some of the
images on the page. The images on the pages relate
to the text as the pictures are telling the story as well
as the text on the page. Most of the story is set in
the woods so a lot of the background setting is In the
woods. The text doesn't always explain that they are
in the woods, so the images are used to inform the
audience extra pieces of information.
7. I could've made more space for the text, so it is clearer
and easier to read for the audience, as the book is
aimed at children. The text is over each image on each
page and I have changed the colour of the text so it
stands out over each background.
8. Is your product suitable for your
audience?
My product is aimed at children aged 3+. I have not
included any offensive text or images. The characters I
have used are interesting and are created so the
audience prefer one character to the other. The
characters are also colourful so they stand stand out on
the page over the background. I have also used
colourful background images so the whole page stands
out to the audience, and also draws attention to the
reader.
9. What do you like/dislike about the
techniques you have used?
I liked wrotoscoping my images because in my opinion
it’s an easy way to cut , change and also create images.
I used a background image as a base image to cut
around and using that I created and coloured my own
image for my story. I also used the brush tool to fill in
the gaps on some of the images I missed out. This Is
good to use because you can colour each pixel one by
one so you don’t miss out any colour on an image. For
some of the images I created a clipping mask so it adds
more detail to the image.
10. For example, I added a grass image over my own and then
added a colour overlay to make it blend in to the image. I
also added planks over trees to make them look more
detailed and added a colour overlay to make the planks
blend in with the trees colour.
11. What do you like/dislike about how
your final product looks?
• I like how I used shapes as well as images to make up
the pictures on my pages. I also used lots of different
colours so each page is colourful and stands out to
the audience. I created a clipping mask over different
images to make them look more detailed and also
more like the image, for example I used an image of
grass and used a colour overlay to make the shade of
green to blend in with my page. Adding a clipping
mask is good because it’s a quick way of adding
detail to an image and it makes it look like the real
thing.
12. I have made the pathway of the page look 3D by making
the image look smaller as it gets further away. I also
changed the shade of brown of the pathway to give it
some extra detail. I placed the character (wolf) behind
some trees to make it look like it was hiding away to make
him look more evil. I Placed the text over images on the
page and changed the text colour to white over the
Brown background so the text
stands out. Over the green
background I changed the colour
to black so the text is more
visible.
13. To improve this page I could add another character on the
page, as the text talks about more than one character. I
could of also added more detail on the trees for example I
could have added a clipping mask and added some
wooden planks. I could of also added some leaves to make
it look more like a forest.
14. Why did you include the content you
used?
To design the character ‘little blue cap’ I got an image
of an existing character and used it for the outline. I
changed the image and added my own details so I
wasn’t copying the existing image. I also got an image
of a real wolf and I went around it with the polygonal
lasso tool, then I made each separate bit onto a
separate layer. I coloured all the different layers
to make different parts of the wolf
stand out. I also added new parts to
the wolf like the tail. The colours
are simple because it’s just a
character.
15. I used simple colours because I wanted the wolf to look
realistic so the audience have an idea that it’s a wolf just
by looking at it.
16. What signs, symbols or codes have
your used in your work?
The villain in my story is a wolf this is because
stereotypically a wolf is an evil animal. Without a
description the audience already have an idea that the
wolf is going to be a villain. The location I used a lot in
my story is the woods, because the characters are
walking through the woods to get to the grandma’s
house. I have lots of different colours, so my images
stand out to the audience. For the trees and the
pathways I have used different shades of brown to
show the different parts, and it also makes it look more
3D so the path looks like it is getting further away.
17. Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to
be able to interpret them.
At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a
magazine is written in.
At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that
we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas.
We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to
understand when looking at others.
We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different
forms.

18. Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
What is this?
This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in
snow and with a red ribbon on.
Our cultural understanding allows us to
interpret its meaning.
To us, in British society, it means
Christmas, presents and family.
This is because we share a cultural
knowledge.

19. Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
There are many other signs and symbols
that we attach meaning to.
A leather jacket can imply rebellion.
A sports car can imply wealth and power.
A cross can represent religion.

20. Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world
over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in.
What that car means however, can be very different depending on your
cultural background.

21. What representations can be found in
your work?
• My story features all different ages as there is a
grandmother and her grandchild. Both boys and girls
are in the story and also a wolf is in the story. I have
made it so the main character ‘little blue cap’ is
visiting the grandmother as she is old and weak. I
have done this because the child is energetic and
healthy and the grandmother isn’t capable of walking
through the forest on her own. This is like the
stereotype of a child and a grandmother.
22. I have chosen a wolf to be the villain because they
represent a scary animal. The audience can also
suspect that the wolf is going to be a villain in the
story before even reading it.
23. What style have you employed in your
products?
• I got the idea of my story from ‘little red riding hood’
but I changed the name of it to ‘little blue cap’ and I
also changed and renamed some of the characters. I
changed the visuals of the characters and made
them into my own so I wasn’t copying ‘little red
riding hood’. I kept the environment the same and
the story line very similar as It is set in the woods and
is about little blue cap on a journey to his
grandmothers.
24. I have kept the villain the same as in both ‘little
red riding hood’ and ‘little blue cap’ a wolf is the
villain. But I haven't used the same visuals as ‘little
red riding hood’ because I got an image of a real
life wolf and wrotoscoped it on Photoshop and
coloured it so it looked more cartoony and so it
would fit in with the other images and the
environment on y story.
25. What were the strengths and weaknesses
of the pre-production and planning
The planning helped me manage my time well as I
planned out different things I would be doing each day,
this made it easier so I wasn’t clueless when doing my
production. The planning also gave me a chance to look
at other existing products so I had more of an idea on
what to do with my production and it also gave me
ideas for images and fonts to use. A weakness with the
planning is that what I planned to do each session
didn’t always go along with the production schedule.
26. I also talked about the health and safety issues within
using computers while doing my production. This is good
because it makes sure the people working are aware of
the issues and then they can think about how they can
prevent it.
27. Historical and cultural context
My story is very similar to the existing children’s
book ‘little red riding hood’ but I have created
my own and changed the name to ‘little blue
cap’. I have done this because I can’t copy a
book that already exists. I have used lots of
different colours for the fonts and images so
they stand out to the audience. It is important
that the images stand out to the audience
because it draws in the audiences attention to
the final product.
28. I have chosen to do my book based around little
red riding hood because it is a very popular story
and a lot of people are familiar with it.
