A Little Prayer
Poet: Unknown
If any little word of mine
May make a life the brighter;
If any little song of mine
May make a heart the lighter,
God help me speak the little word.
And take my bit of singing,
And drop it in some lonely vale
To set the echoes ringing.
If any little love of mine
May make a life the sweeter;
If any little care of mine
May make a friend's the fleeter;
If any little lift may ease
The burden of another,
God give me love, and care and strength
To help my toiling brother.
Process Questions:
What did you notice about how
I read that article?
As I read the poem aloud what
difference did you notice?
Group Activity (5 minutes)
If I can stop one heart from breaking
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
Emily Dickinson
( 5 minutes)
 What can you say about the sample
poem above?
 List down all your observations
regarding word choice and usage,
structure, etc.
Reading a Poem (10 minutes)
Read the poem below then answer the questions that follow.
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
Reading a Poem (10 minutes)
Read the poem below then answer the questions that follow.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
(5 minutes)
Processing Questions
 Does the poem have figurative language and
imagery?
 Does it create images?
 Are there words that rhyme?
 Is it easy to understand?
 Does the poem touch people emotionally?
Group Activity (10 minutes)
Note: Divide the class into four groups. Give copies
of the sample poem and story for each group. Each
group should prepare Venn Diagram presenting the
differences between a poem and a story. After
preparing the diagram each group will present their
work in front of the class.
The Road Not Taken
BY ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Poetry is a word composition
arranged in a rhythmic pattern. It is
used to express one’s creative
thoughts and feelings through a
specialized and heightened
language.
-It uses formal diction
-It uses informal diction
-They are both short.
-It is composed of lines
and stanzas.
POEM SHORT STORY
It is composed of lines and paragraphs. It is composed of sentences and paragraphs.
It is based from universal truth. It is based from fiction.
Poetry has unique characteristics if
compared to other forms of creative writing
which include the following:
1. It expresses creative thoughts in much briefer
way than a short story and novel.
2.It uses elements such as rhythm, imagery,
verse and meter, and poetic devices.
3.It has a structure.
4. It is used to express intense personal
emotions and experiences.
5. The content of the poem shows the
universal truth and connotes a deeper
meaning.
6. It does not use everyday language.
(5 minutes)
Using the sample poems above, try to
write a short poem. This is to gauge your
basic understanding of how a poem
should be written.
EVALUATION (10 minutes)
Write 2-3 paragraph reflection
discussing what you have
learned in the lesson.
