8. Roles and responsibilities undertaken :
After training I was posted in transmission engineering department of NTPC and
subsequently in Powergrid and since then I have handled the following activities —
• Preparation of Technical Tender Specification for 400kV and 220kV transmission line
tower, conductor, earthwire, insulator and other line accessories and hardware packages.
• Preparation of Technical Tender Specification for special equipment such as, Tension
Stringing Equipment (TSE) and Hot Line Maintenance equipment suitable for 400kV
level transmission line, Day/Night Aviation Warning Signals as per International Civil
Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requirements. I had been to the Works of M/s. TESMEC
CRF to assess their manufacturing capability and to carry out performance tests on their
16 Tonne TSE set.
• Checking and approving the designs submitted by contractor for different type of towers
and line materials.
• Technical Assessment of new vendors for different 400kV equipment.
• Witnessing of type tests on towers and line materials.
• I have dealt with tender preparation and also post award engineering activities for Dubai
Transmission Project on turn-key basis. This was the first such overseas contract of U.S
$17.70 millions (in Yr. 1990), won by NTPC and jointly executed along with M/s. KEC
International Ltd.
• I have visited Works of M/s. NGK, M/s SYGG and M/s. SEDIVER in connection with
testing of insulators.
• I have also visited Dalian Insulator Works, China, to assess their technical capability and
quality standards. In this context, I was associated with M/s. Merz and McLellan in
quality surveillance and selecting insulator samples for type testing.
• I have visited the Works of M/s ZTT, Nantong, China, for carrying out quality checks on
OPGW supplied by them for UP BOOT Projects. Also presently, carrying out type tests
on the OPGW of M/s Sterlite make.
• From April ’97 to February ’02, I worked as Sub-Consultant to M/s. Merz and McLellan
(now known as PB Power) of UK for Orissa Power Sector Restructuring Project which
Page 2 of 3
3. was being executed by Joint Venture of M/s. Merz and McLellan and M/s. Seeboard
International, UK, under assignment from the Department for International
Development, UK. Here my job was to assist M/s. M&M in writing Technical
Specification, Tender evaluation, Project and Contract Management, Transfer of
Technology etc. as Overhead Transmission Line Specialist.
• I have worked (on deputation basis) in Powerlinks Transmission Ltd., a joint venture of
Powergrid and Tata Power. Here my job was to look after all engineering and
quality/inspection and Site related issues of the Tala Transmission System, besides related
project management/execution and contract issues. Tala Transmission System has been
successfully commissioned and running under commercial operation since Aug’06. This is
the first transmission system that has come up under Private-Public Partnership.
• I was Site-In-Charge for the implementation of transmission system associated with DVC
– Maithon Right Bank Project (of Powergrid) at Gaya.
• In Reliance Infra group (ADAG) I was looking after of all the engineering related issues
of Parbati Koldam Transmission Company as well as that of Reliance Power
Transmission Ltd. The survey and estimation of the transmission projects associated with
North Karanpura and Talcher, floated by REC as BPC, was carried out under my
supervision; the project was won by Reliance.
• Presently at Isolux Corsan (India), I am looking after all the transmission line engineering
related issues in India (and also of overseas projects on selective basis). We have already
successfully developed and tested eight new tower designs for UP BOOT Project with
very competitive weights. We have also successfully redesigned three suspension towers
of our project being implemented in Brazil, with a weight saving of about 10 to 12%. We
have also designed four nos. of new towers for our project in Tanzania.
• Recently, I have been posted at Lucknow as Head : Project Construction (parallel to
Spanish Project Head) to look after the execution of UP BOOT Project
• I am also a member of the Expert Group for revision of CBIP Manual for Transmission
Line Tower; the revised manual is expected to be completed by end 2013. I am also
member of CIGRE study group for EHV transmission lines in India.
