Introduction to writing Poetry
and TA2 Revision
Format for TA2
• 3 Sections
• Section A- Lit devices (simile, metaphor etc.)
• Section B- Midnight Skaters
• Section C- Unseen poem. Just answer the
questions the best you can.
Alliteration:
Having the same letter in front of
every word
Example: Goofy Goober gobbled
good grub. Goodnight
Same letter- G
Hyperbole:
Exaggerating something. Making
something seem more. Lying
Example: I feel like I have slept for a
million years. This is a hyperbole as
if he had actually slept for a million
years, he would be dead.
Imagery:
Words used to describe an image.
Most often together with touch, smell,
taste, sight and sound
Example- The brown chicken with
rough feathers and a bright yellow
beak often cried out in its shrill voice. It
wasn’t until I killed it and gave it a
delicious barbacue, smokey flavour did
I finally like the chicken.
Metaphor:
A comparison of any two things
Examples: John is a carpet.
Frank’s face looked piggish. My
heart was a brick, weighing me
down
Simile:
A comparison of any two
things with like or as
Examples:
Frank’s face is just like a pig.
Frank’s face is as ugly as a pig
Onomatopoeia:
The use of words that are like
sounds/ sound effects
Examples – Clap, Bang, Swish
Personification:
Making objects human.
For example, “The flames
danced around my room before
creeping into my bed and kissing
my feet.

What device is this?
• I knew I should not,
• Have waited for too long,
• It doesn’t seem fair as time had crawled by
Why do we use Figurative Language
• It’s hard to express how we feel using proper
sentences
• Sentences simply do not do justice
• Eg.
She is very pretty.
She reminds me of the winter night sky. In a pool of
darkness, does her beauty shimmer.
How to answer using PEE
• Point- State ONE point and give the reason
behind it
• Evidence- QUOTE or TAKE FROM THE POEM.
This means lifting the words from the poem
• Explain using the evidence to support your
point
Personal Response
• Why do you like Midnight Skaters?
• I love Midnight Skaters because it is a lively poem
that makes me smile. The movement and
excitement of the cutlery coming to life at night
such as the knives skating in the sink makes the
poem seem lively. This lively poem helps to
uplift my mood and makes me smile. That is
why I like Midnight Skaters
• Red- Point, Blue- Evidence, Black, Explanation
For your TA2
• Read on literary devices. Memorise them
• Read Midnight Skaters! Pg 16. If not,
download online
• Read your LRP. Pg 17 especially.
