2. Green Screen
Usually movies will start
with a green licensing
screen from the Motion
Picture Association of
America.
This green licensing will occur
only if the movie is produced
by one of the following
institutions. They are Walt
Disney Studios, Sony Pictures
Entertainment, Paramount
Pictures, 20th Century
Fox, Universal Studios, or
Warner Bro’s.
3. Production Companies and Logo
Production logo’s tell the audience who
has created the movie. If the production
companies are well-known due to
successful movies, it helps in advertising
the movie.
Production Logo’s
change during
time, here you can see
the change in
‘Paramount pictures’
through out time.
Sometimes you see a change in production
logos which may reflect to what the genre
of the movie is, for example , take the
movie inception. Warner Bothers changed
the look of the logo to set the theme of
the movie.
4. Certification from the BBFC
Certification from the British Board of
Film Classification. This certification
allows the audience to know what sort
of target audience the movie is aimed
at. It shows the minimum age that
anyone can watch the movie.
5. Crews and Cast and Incitements
Movie trailers want people to watch them and one way to
achieve this is naming the recognized Actors and
Actresses that star in the movie. For example in the movie
Kung Fu Panda, Jack Black stars as the panda and is a way
to lure lovers of his work to watch the movie.
Another way to attract the audience is to tell them
what the movie is about, in this case Twilight is a
movie from the worldwide best seller book that
everyone known's about which is a major selling
point.
Sometimes Movie trailers will tempt the
audience to come and watch the movie by
mentioning other movies that have been
produced by the same people or directed by
same people. If they enjoyed other movies of
the produced by them then they may like the
content of this movie as well.
6. Titles
Every Trailer has one , it is usually at the end of the
movie which creates a sense of tension as you
watch what's in the movie without being told the
name of it. This leaves the audience on the tip of
their seats till they find out what it is called.
The font of the titles can be used to promote the genre of the movie and give the audience some
sort of information about the movie. The font, colours and pictures used are a good give away of
what might me entailed in the movie.
For example, the movie Transporters title gives a dark and looks similar to the transformers
that are in the movie. With hop which is a children's movie, the colours are bring and the font
is easy to read. The movie Chopping Mall is a horror movie which is shown in the gory, blood
looking font.
7. In the new generation of
movies, we see a new
type of convention of the
Social Media.
This new convention, encourages
the audience to learn more about
the movie by though different
types of media and social
networking sites.
Examples of these
social media’s are:
With an increase in social
media, through the
years, films are being
promoted more though other
sources rather than just
trailers.
Now a days at the end of movies they
tend to add :
8. Different paces
A code and convention of
Movie trailer is pace. Majority
of trailers are short, around 2
minutes 30 to 3 minutes. This
means that you need to have
as much information that
attracts the audience as
possible in that short space of
time.
Ive taken the example of the
movie ‘Inception’ which shows
how the beginning of the
movie trailer is slow and
setting the scene, and after we
get to the turning point of the
movie trailer we see the pace
increase and thing get more
and more rapid towards the
end. This causes the trailer to
be more interesting and
wanting you to go and see the
movie so you know what
happens.
9. Screens
Black screens are a new type of code and convention of movie trailers. The add more dramatic
scenes and jump cut to a black screen then back to the scene. This adds more tension
throughout the trailer.
Take the example of two guns below, we see a crash on one side of the black screen, then we cut
to the black screen, then we go back to the scene before where we see the police and other cars
coming into the scene and we see whether or not the characters in the car in the scene are dead
or alive. This raises more anxiety in the audience and creates a good atmosphere.
