Drilling Application Center
Background
Aerospace customers all around the world require highly customized drilling solutions for
advanced applications including special materials and combination of these. Precision drilling
is a critical requirement for aerospace operations.
Proven solutions with documented results in all aerospace customers are, since ever and
undoubtedly, a must. Like in many other competitive industries or industrial environments,
shortcuts are not a possible option.
Thanks to the new Drilling Application Center, with an open-access for the customers, Atlas
Copco China now has an outstanding offer in total component solutions for the Chinese
aerospace customers.
First Drilling Application Center in Atlas Copco
Customer Center China takes the lead to drive the sales process in drilling operations
starting from the customer applications prospective by establishing an application center.
The Center is instrumental in providing the right tool and maximize the customer satisfaction
enhancing our presence for both existing and future programs.
The purpose is to co-develop with our customers the right processes and solutions and
define the optimum combinations of all the different parameters that have to match each
other into a unique solution where the maximum productivity and highest level of quality is
our task.
In the ADU drilling process, in particular, there are many variable that need to be confirmed:
speed, feed rate, cutters, lubricant, vibration systems (Chiplet®), material, stack, stand-off,
etc. The Drilling Application Center is the place where together with our customer we
evaluated the combinations that maximize the customer productivity.

Among power tools supplier and solution providers in the Aerospace industry, Atlas Copco is
the first company to create in Asia a place where customized solutions for drilling technique
are studied, elaborated and co-developed with the local customer participation. Finding
solutions to production challenges, where a “total solution” or “turnkey” package is
commonly requested by customer, confirms once again how Atlas Copco customer-centric
approach is highly committed to production customer needs. This is just one of the reason
why Per Tornberg, Business Manager Aerospace, has enthusiastically supported this initiative
which is in line with the three years GI strategy.
The Application Center operation in China is run by a dedicated team that can rely on some
key measurement instruments which allow Atlas Copco to deliver objective results. A big
thank you goes for the hard work to Thomas Chang, Senior Product Manager Aerospace
Segment, Hai Bing Wang, GI Product Support and Jeffrey Gao, GI Product Manager.
A continued technical dialog with the marketing divisional team, and the Drilling Competence
team based in Nacka, creates also the right platform which represent the “extra gear” to
generate the right competence needed in such competitive market and provide solutions that
are top-of-the line and suited to the unique needs of the customer.

How it works
Based on the most popular material and layer combinations in the industry, eleven
applications are at the core of the Center’s work. Any customer applications can be virtually
replicated here and test results for a major part of applications in China are already tangible
because of the Center. The Chinese Application Center is equipped with:
Measurement instrument
 Digital bore gauges: from 3,7mm to 18mm.
 Countersink measurement device.
 Burrs measurement device.
Drilling templates
 2 drill jigs for test material 300x300mm.
 Concentric collet jig: bores 21.4, 23.4, 29 mm.
 Twist lock jig: bores 25mm.
Drilling material
 TI-AL thickness 20mm.
 AL Thickness 50mm.
 CF-AL Thickness 20mm.
 AL Thickness 20mm.
Test, demos and application process in cooperation with our customers are now on going and
the customers’ reaction to our new Drilling Application Center has been overwhelming
positive.
With these trials, and in collaborations with our partners, the total solutions (turnkey
solutions) are now possible. Our customers can benefit from Atlas Copco a new and

professional methodology, the same methodology that Atlas Copco adopts to meet the
specification requested by aerospace OEMs in terms of surface finish, diameter, exit burr and
process capability (Cp/Cpk).
One example, during the setup of the Center, in collaboration with Sandvik we experienced a
great performance of our PFD1100CC drilling in CF/TI, we achieved a Cpk of 2.256 and
showed the great reliability and high repeatability of the PFD1100 in one of the most
complex and studied drilling applications.

“The Chinese Customer Center established this outstanding Drilling
Application Center to create competence. It opens the door to working
shoulder-to-shoulder with the Chinese aerospace customers, covering the
entire drilling process.” says Ivano Nastasi, Regional Segment Manager,
Aerospace Asia. “Thanks to this technology platform, we now have
opportunities to deepen our contribution to the Chinese aerospace industry
far beyond the drilling process. We can also look at the entire assembly
process! With a dedicated testing room, we can assist the manufacturing
process by presenting tested and proven results for our customers.”
The Center opened during the first week of April, and Sandvik also took part in the opening
with the presence of their international team including their Global Engineering Development
Manager, Mohamed Hammadi and Mr.Jean-Louis Macey, President North Asia. On the last
day of the busy, opening week, Shao Bai Li, VP Marketing Asia took part into the discussion
with Sandvik and Jeffrey Wu, BLM China, presented his organization and encouraged and
promoted a positive, mutual partnership, especially for those customers which require a total
solution approach.

With the Drilling Application Center in place many activities can be enhance to support the
market with:
 Technical Seminars
 Customer day Event
 Sales Training
 Customer Training
The Aerospace Chinese team, lead by Clark Shi, achieved this important milestone in a well-
organized team and in coordination with the entire Aerospace team based in Nacka. In
particular with Simone Bianchi, Global Application Engineering who provided his competence
and full technical support towards identifying the efficient test room setup based on the
current aerospace market needs. Simone also ran a training to the Aerospace Chinese team,
during the Center setup operation, in which all the different technique of measurement have
been fully explored.
The Drilling Application Center established in China can rely on a market-focused and
process-oriented team that develops and delivers innovative solutions to our customers,
produces predictable and repeatable results and provides dynamic drilling solutions that can
meet and even exceed the customers’ expectations.
