This document summarizes a master's thesis that provides a step-by-step guide for incorporating environmental aspects into the furniture design process. The guide outlines 7 steps for a sustainable design strategy: 1) Understanding the product's use context, 2) Overviewing environmental impacts, 3) Creating an environmental profile, 4) Mapping stakeholders, 5) Selecting materials and processes, 6) Developing an environmental concept, and 7) Establishing an environmental strategy. The thesis aims to help designers implement sustainability practices from the early design stages through a clear process. It also presents a pilot project applying the proposed systematic approach.
2. Handtlers
2013
Hand hygiene in health care, re-
search, conceptual design, pro-
totyping. Project made in coop-
eration with
North Estonia Medical Centre.
4. Concepts
Ball Concept
Designed around the action:
Natural hand position
Right distance
Functional necessity
Device would consist of
Spray nozzle and pump
Mesh
Pump and trigger
Reservoir
Concepts
Toaster Concept
A black box solution
Input dirty hands
Output clean hands
Device would consist of
Hand compartment
Spray nozzles and tubing
Reservoir
Sensor/trigger
Handtlers
A New Approach to Hand Hygiene
Utilizing people’s natural
hand positions and
movements, the Handtlers
device seeks to find a
unique, easy and relaxed
way to effectively disinfect
germ-ridden hands.
6. Paseo
2012
Conceptual design of Personal
Training Equipment.
Reallifeandrealuserproblems,
finding possibilities for sustain-
able business ideas.
7. Paseo is a home training equip-
ment that mimics stepping in a
natural way.
Paseo is part of a new business
model that also engages people
who are not willing to exercise in
gym by renting different equip-
ment and guiding training via ser-
vice system.

8. ZP Physiology
Why run barefoot?
- use leg muscels more efficiently
- don’t limit proprioception sense
(gives information about body position and movement)
- traines also foot valve muscels witch are can weaken
when using heal supporting footware
Needed movement
- put foot down front/middle part first
- unstable foot placement for training proprioception
sense and balance
Muscles intended to train
- m. peroneus longus
- m. tibialis posterior
- m. triceps surae
Barefoot vs shoes
Before contact the
foot is in a more
natural, relaxed
position
The runner lands on
the forefoot and
adjusts the impact
instincively because of
increased sensitivity to
the surface
Before the contact
the foot is pointed
upward
Cushioned shoe
encourage the
runner to land heel-
firsts
Force distribution
11. KLIPS is a smart and
easy tool to use for room
deviders.
It can be widely used for
outdoor and indoor fix-
ing.
The deceive is suitable
for different types of
material as: heavy tex-
tile, panels, glass.

Step- by- step Guide
Master Thesis by Iuliia Vorobiova
Supervisor: Ruth-Helene Melioranski
Co-supervisor: Miriam Kozemjakin da Silva
The idea to create this guide came from a need to have a clear understanding of what
sustainability is and how it is possible to apply this practice in design, involving sus-
tainable design strategy at the early stages of a product’s development process.
