6. Pillitteri is the largest estate producer of Icewines in the world. Presently grows 14
varieties of grapes for table wines and Icewines that have produced over 800 award
winning wines in the last 25 years.
The Challenge
Weather is a critical factor to vine survival and grape quality. Icewine harvest and fruit bud
survival are determined by often a couple of degrees Celsius, so timing is critical.
• The earlier cables solution could only connect to areas with electricity or a dedicated phone
line.
• Extended cables got damaged from farm equipment and portability was difficult.
• With a one kilometer long vineyard, significant temperature variations were observed from the
one end by the buildings to the other.
The Solution
Pillitteri added the ConnectedCrops wireless, portable station. This has enabled them to more
accurately find which vineyard or block is colder, determine which wind machine to start first and
to monitor grape temperatures while harvesting Icewine. Also, critically, they can locate sensors
from top to bottom of any wind machine or tower for the app to let them know if there is regular
temperature inversions or rapid ones.

7. Fruit farm located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario for over 40 years. Kauzlaric
farms grow a variety of different fruit selections, including Apples, Apricots,
Peaches, Grapes, Pears and Plums.
The Challenge
Kauzlaric Family Farms installed a drip irrigation system in 2009 to decrease the cost of
irrigation. Throughout the season, they would struggle to determine how much water was needed
at different times of the day.
• Decided to move away from ‘estimating’.
• Participated in an water use efficiency study with OMAFRA (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture,
Food and Rural Affairs) in order to understand how the system was operating and the field
capacity of the soils that could retain water for optimal tree/vine growth with the diverse soil
requirements.
The Solution
With their fast-paced production cycle, they can now monitor real-time soil and air temperature
readings through the ConnectedCrops app that runs on smartphone. They can set up thresholds
to know when to turn on the irrigation system based on the soil moisture readings – less effort;
increased water use efficiency and no more guessing!

The Challenge
• Fresh market vegetable and fruit farmers are in search of every opportunity to increase the

• Maximizing yields and crop quality is of major importance in today’s markets.
ConnectedCrops offered an opportunity to demonstrate and field test the Advanced Irrigation Unit
to measure soil water content in real time. Cooperating with Dan Roelofs of Arden Farms and in
his own educational garden located in East Aurora, NY; he measured soil moisture and modified
low-flow and overhead irrigation schedules in response to the ConnectedCrops app and solar
powered monitoring system.
Recommendation
ConnectedCrops software and hardware sensors are practical and cost effective solutions for
farmers, gardeners, foresters, nut grove developers, and other agriculturalists. Such applications
seem to be concrete steps towards reducing water, chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and
pesticides use, making more efficient use of any such uses, potential for boosting nutritional value
of editable food, while reducing costs for all producers in the local and national food supply chain.
