The American journalist gets one of
the managerial positions in the
Hyundai Company. He felt discomfort
when his subordinates expressed the
deference to him, so he asked them to
treat as an equal. The lack of
deference led to a breakdown in
discipline and professionalism, with
employees wasting time in casual
conversation. The result was that
office lost much productivity that it
was nearly shut down and the
supervisor was reassigned. Americans
and Asians do not understand the
respect and hierarchy issue the same
way.
The conduct code
of the local
companies often
differs from the
conduct code of
the international
companies

Ukraine is famous for corruption.
We have it publicly discussed and
everyone know that it exists. If you
are working in the company, and
do something that matters for the
client, and the client wants to say
«thank you» by a special gift, the
employees often do not know what
gift they can accept and what
decline. The DTEK has social norm
«Employees are prohibited from
providing or accepting business
entertainment or gifts of a nominal
value exceeding the limit
established by the applicable laws
of Ukraine and countries where the
Group operates or by DTEK’s
internal regulations» that regulates
it.

Americans are open-minded,
friendly and always ready to
help the Colgate Palmolive
have the norm of giving and
seeking the feedback: «Develop
all Colgate people by giving and
seeking constructive, specific
feedback; provide direction and
help people stay on track;
motivate positive change and
inspire exceptional work». The
companies in Ukraine do not
have the similar norm.
The non-written
business norms of
countries also
impact on the
businesses that
act globally

○ In Western countries the rule-centered
approach of building the agreements
and manage the disputes exist, while
the Eastern countries prefer
establishing individual relationships
rather than depending on the lengthy
contracts. And when the Americans at
the outset presented to a potential
Japanese firm a 50 pages contract,
the Japanese leaders refuse to read
the contract and somehow negotiate
with them, because the Americans did
not take a time to establish the
relationships.
