4. emember that whistle blowing in the middle of the night while the entire
Rarea is having pin-drop silence? Remember those sounds of “Thak-thak-
thak” on the dark and lonely alleys near the house? Some of us still hear
those sounds, but the people growing and living in the fast-paced so called
“Developed” cities miss those “experiences”. That is the sound which made us to
believe that “We are safe”, even though it is dark, the streets are empty and all
our neighbors are sleeping. That is the sound which used to act as a catalyst to
our peaceful sleep. That is the sound which resembles with the old security man
of the colony.
While digging out facts about the Indian private security sector, it is apparently
observed that this sector is expected to grow at a much faster rate in near future
and the massive expansion in the sector is expected to create millions of jobs for
the masses over next the few years. India's huge competitive advantage has been
the availability of enough manpower. Large numbers of youth who fall below the
poverty line are the ones who decide to drop out of the formal education system
and ultimately face limited opportunities of employment. Many of them come to
the urban area in search of better employment opportunities. The private security
industry provides several employment opportunities to large number of rural
youth. It is certainly a sunrise sector with the potential to be the second largest
employment generator in the country.
Earlier, security meant a chowkidar with a stick and whistle but today the sector
is well organized and provides professional and customized services. It is not
only restricted to manned guarding, the security companies have moved into
diversified fields such as cash handling, integrated facility management,
electronic security services, security architecture and engineering, and more
proficient services. The new-age security market is not only providing these
varieties of services but the work force also gets the opportunity to up-skill
themselves.
According to Maslow's theory of motivation, the second most important need
after food and shelter is the need for protection and security. The theory says that
the basic need of safety must be met before moving to satisfy higher level of
needs. It is a natural desire of human being to feel safe and protected. With the
growing economy coupled with rising urbanization, construction offers vast
opportunities to the growing security industry. The major investment in large
scale infrastructure projects, industrial set ups, developments of public
infrastructure such as airports, shopping malls, metro stations and other landscape
developments have created more demand of private security services. Moreover,
Government initiatives of development of smart cities will fuel the growth of the
industry.

Tech Scenario
19. hen we talk about an IT sector, RFID (Radio
WFrequency Identification) is an emerging
technology in India & all over the world
now-a-days, especially in education & manufacturing
sectors. AIDC (Automatic Identification & Data capture)
domain is an emerging concept for the era now, which
focuses on identification of each & every item, including
a raw material, finished goods, manufacturing machine,
or an asset of the company – admin assets & IT / non-IT
assets in manufacturing plants.
RFID works on the principal of RFID tag, which has a
memory chip, a reader & antenna, which helps in reading
the tag & the software where it is sent for further
processing. All these mechanism shows the results for
automation on the line of identification.
RFID is broadly categorized in 3 different frequencies –
1. LF – Low frequency OR proximity. This works on a
smaller read range of 2-5 cm distance and 125 Khz.
2. HF – High frequency OR mifare. This works on
13.56 MHz on a same read distance like LF i.e. 2-5
cm. The only difference in LF & HF is that HF chip
has a memory for information writing, whereas LF
chip has no memory.
3. UHF – Ultrahigh frequency. This has a memory in
tag, as well as it works on larger read distance,
starting from 3 meters to 15 meters according to
the tags & readers used.
The actors affecting RFID read range are – metal, water
& human body. Hence, there are special tags are being
manufactured by companies to be used on metal objects.
These tags are either the hard tags which create some
insulation between metal surface & tag chip & help them
give a good read range. Beauty of the metal tags is they
make the entire metal object as their antenna to give a
fantastic read range.
Industries which are adopting RFID in all their processes
are Automobile, Education, Health care & Retail sectors.
Aviation is also using RFID with certain norms of the
industry.
Some of the popular applications of RFID are –
Access control system, Parking management system,
Visitor management system, Asset management system,
Guard patrolling management, RFID based Toll
collection, Library management system, Retail theft
control system, Vehicle tracking system, Supply chain
management, Jewelery management System, Document
management system, Hospital management system,
School management System, E – Certificate, Automobile
industry, RFID yard management, student tracking &
attendance management.
In addition to this, RFID is used across construction,
engineering, the chemical industries, manufacturing,
sugar factories, retail, logistics, and the public sector as
well as many others. However, the value of the various
benefits of RFID is often different in different sectors.
Lower Cost & Higher Productivity
RFID applications can automate the collection of
information about the movement and location of assets,
components, stock or other items; doing this more
quickly, whilst reducing costs and with greater accuracy
and reliability than is possible with manual methods and
with more detail than can be obtained from techniques
such as bar-coding. Data collection can be a by-product
of other activities, eliminating the need for effort in form
filling. Identifying products using RFID is quicker than
barcode scanning or manual entry of product details.
Improved Quality for Data Capture
Using an RFID approach means data can be captured
July 2018| 17
20. rapidly and accurately. Electronic data collection with RFID avoids data transcription errors and avoids
“missed items” when used to collect data on large numbers of items at once.
Reduced Capital Costs
RFID technologies help to lower costs by providing better control of stocks or assets. They can help keep
track of business assets such as test equipment, transport packing, computing technology and other
portable devices.
Better Security
Access control systems using RFID contribute to improved security of business premises. RFID tagging
of stock and assets makes it easier to track inventory “shrinkage” and tags can be used to fight against
product counterfeiting.
Increased Revenues
By reducing stock-outs, by avoiding the credibility gap between notional stock available for orders and
actual stock present in the warehouse, and by offering improved information on product movements to
customers, organizations using RFID can provide a service that creates competitive differentiation and
promotes increased customer satisfaction with the opportunities for higher sales and better margins.
Shorter Processes
Because RFID technologies can be integrated with other manufacturing or supply chain technologies
(automated pallet handling, stock picking systems, etc) the time from order to despatch and delivery can
be reduced.
Improved Regulatory Compliance
Using RFID to control when devices have been inspected or to restrict their movement can form part of a
strategy to address health and safety issues or to satisfy insurers or regulatory bodies that processes are
being followed.
Looking at the above benefits, Indian government as well as private companies is sanctioning separate
budgets for this technology, & even it is being made mandatory in some places. The time is closer, when
every company will be using some or the other application of RFID.

25. The Rise of
Autonomous Robots
in
Physical Security
The field of robotics has taken an upward trajectory with developments in it as well as in other
technologies like wireless communications, AI, and IoT. Robots have entered various domains today.
The industry of physical security is witnessing the same trend. Robots have moved further on from
mere factory jobs and entered the sphere of physical security. Few Silicon Valley startups have already
developed and deployed autonomous robots, made purely for the purpose of security and surveillance.
Although, robots have just broken into the surface of the security industry, the advantages and impact of this
has been realized already. The world can expect autonomous robots to be the future of physical security. Seems
like the picture that all the robot centered sci-fi movies have painted in our minds throughout the years, will be
the part of our reality someday.
A New Partner of Security Officers
Globally, the autonomous security robots are gradually being adopted by various industries.
This new-age technology will make the lives of the security teams easier and reduce the
risk posed on their lives. These robots are made from the amalgamation of three cutting-
edge technologies: Robotics, artificial intelligence, and automation. Automation
provides them self-driving capabilities, helping them to patrol the perimeters of
industries, malls, hospitals, and various other building by themselves. The robots
are equipped with high-tech technologies for surveillance, processing, and
protection, enabling better situational awareness.
July 2018| 23
26. Robots and people can work best when they work together.
This partnership has various advantages like increased
responsiveness and enhanced patrolling abilities. For
maintaining the security of large areas, where numerous
guards are required, robots can serve as “additional fleet on
ground”, and with higher efficiency. With security robots in
the team, human guards will be free from repetitive
mundane tasks and can take up more strategic tasks. This
new addition to the team of security officers comes bearing
the gift of ease, accuracy, and safety.
Perks of Security Robots
They are Incorruptible- Robots cannot be swayed from
their path and are bound to perform the ingrained task they
are programmed to do. Unlike humans, they cannot be
bought off as robots are not prone to greed. They are
programmed to rigorously enforce the functions
incorporated into them.
Enhanced Mobility- Due to the advantages of IoT, robots
today are more mobile as compared to the robots a few
decades back. Owing to their in-built navigation systems,
the security robots can traverse large areas, placing
themselves strategically in the geographical location to be
secured. Not just this, with cameras and sensors, robots can
navigate through complex and difficult terrain as well.
Robots are ‘Always ON’- A robot never sleeps, because it is
never tired. It works with the same vigilance even after
performing most monotonous jobs. It does not need breaks
and can work in various temperature changes, without any
effect on its efficiency. It produces a response to any
situation within milliseconds, as long as its batteries are
charged.
“A security guard will usually do a twenty-minute round
and then return to the control room where he will monitor
the cameras. A robot can navigate a warehouse 24/7, doing
the same round over and over, without ever getting bored or
tired.”-Renato Cudicio, a seasoned IT and Robotics
Security Manager.
Equipped with Nonlethal Weapons- Robots are equipped
with limited nonlethal weapons including smoke emitters,
Tasers, paint ball guns, and many more. Currently, robots
are programmed not to tackle the recognized threats
physically, but instead deploy the non-lethal weapons at the
time and inform the human security officers.
Enhanced Surveillance- Technologies enabling improved
360 degree vision, night vision, etc. are fitted in the robots.
This allows them to capture, stream, and store the data of
the activities in the building perimeters easily. The robots
can patrol the whole perimeter 24/7 without being tired. A
security guard can access this data whenever required, with
an added advantage of watching it on the hand-held
devices. Robots also have techniques like face recognition,
number plate recognition, and so on, incorporated in them
along with a technique to detect pattern within the stored
data. This helps in detecting any anomaly faster and ahead
of time.
Robots as Force Multipliers- Force multipliers are the tools
of any kind that allow the user to do the same amount of
work more efficiently and in less time. Robots can be it, for
the existing security. They can increase the effectiveness,
efficiency, and abilities to safeguard remote areas in the
security team. Also, as robots are identical and have no
different personalities than one another, a user need only
learn to operate one.
They are Cost Effective- A single robot is capable of
working all day and night with same concentration, which
is equivalent to the work done by two or three human
guards. This helps in cutting the cost, as investment in robot
is less expensive than the workers’ wages.
Robots reduce the Risks for Human Security: The robots
serve as the eyes and ears for the human guards, replacing
them in difficult conditions and dangerous situations. They
can even help in immediate evacuation of the area in case
of a physical threat or industrial mishaps like chemical
hazards, fire, etc. This helps in reducing the damage caused
in such situations as well as risks for the security officers.
Like all other technologies that looked fiction before
turning into a reality, humans will gradually get acquainted
to their interaction with robots. In the security industry, the
teaming up of humans and robots will make the existing
security more effective as well as support new operational
and functional developments further. Due to its clear
advantage, more and more businesses are adopting this
technology to improve their security and surveillance
capabilities. It is not wrong to say that security robots will
majorly influence the future of physical security industry. It
is exciting to imagine what future developments in robotics
will bring to the security industry as well as the world.

Wprosperous nations and economic powers.
While every Country follows the policy nation
first and wants to create jobs, set up local manufacturing to
boost economy and cut down imports, are these the only
reasons behind trade wars or there is more to it? Most of the
times it is domestic political compulsions which drive these
measures rather than economic considerations. In these
circumstances countries have to prepare themselves to
create industry friendly and conducive domestic
environment to encourage local manufacture and increase
per capita income to enable citizens to bear extra burden of
tariffs.
With coming to power, Modi Government rolled out many
initiatives to improve India's standing in international
community, boost economy, create business friendly
environment and non-adversarial tax administration. In
addition, Make in India initiative, introduction of Goods
and Service Tax (GST) and the Bankruptcy and Solvency
Act, Liberalisation of FDI Policy, etc. has strengthened
India’s position as preferred place to do business
Ease of Doing Business is critical pillar of Make in India
initiative launched by the Government to encourage
manufacturing in India. Concerted efforts by all
stakeholders resulted in improving India’s ranking in World
Banks' Ease of Doing Business Index from 130 to 100. This
quantum jump is result of continuing dialogue with
industry, improving business environment, reducing touch
points with regulators and tax inspectors, addressing
menace of corruption, etc. While lot has been done, many
times more needs to be done.
The Department of Industrial Promotion and Policy (DIPP)
has launched an online portal to track implementation of
reforms on real time basis and also formed EoDB Team,
which is taking constant feedback from industry and
passing on to concerned departments, monitoring key
initiatives to map efficacy & impact and in case of need
suggest mid-course correction to concerned authorities.
People from all walks of life are invited for consultation on

of the major indirect tax reforms this Country has seen.
Creation of GST Council comprising of Federal and State
Finance Minsters as members, is newly minted statutory
body spearheading implementation of GST in India, which
is a unique example of federalism in India. GST has not
only improved supply chain but also removed cascading

glitches on GSTN portal leading to tax payers not able to
upload documents and returns, abnormal delay in sanction
of export refunds, levy of compensation cess on vehicles
clubbing them with sin goods, frequent amendment of the
GST Rules both at Federal and State level –resulting in
dampening euphoria of unified tax market. Though the GST
Council has played a pivot role in quickly addressing
concerns of industry, still large number of painful issues
need to be addressed to bring in stability and reap benefits
of this major tax reform.
On export-import front, Customs has introduced many
initiatives to improve user experience including single
window clearance, 24 X 7 clearance at key ports, revision
of procedure of SVB investigations in case of related party
transactions, reduction in number of documents to be filed,
etc. While these efforts have improved clearance to certain
extent yet colonial mindset of officers at ports is biggest
challenge. Many time customs officers change settled
classification, declared value is loaded without any reason,
which disrupts business and causes considerable costs to
industry in terms of delays coupled with loss of orders and
increased cost of litigation. Even authorities functioning as
quasi-judicial adjudicators, pass orders in utter disregard to
judicial discipline and fair play. Fortunately, we have great
institution of Tribunal and Courts, which comes to rescue of
industry but at very high cost to industry. It is high time that
Finance Ministry brings in some accountability in ensuring
judicial discipline and reasonable approach by its own
officers.
On corruption front the Government has moved to e-filing
and self-assessment significantly cutting down face time
with inspectors and regulators. Further, significant
amendments are proposed to the Prevention of Corruption
Act to give it more teeth and reach. However, still we face
daily grind of retail corruption, which needs be addressed
sooner than later.
While a beginning is made, sustained efforts at improving
delivery of services and change of attitude of authorities
from tax collectors and regulators to facilitators, ensuring
speedy justice delivery system, improved infrastructure and
easy availability of funds at reasonable costs would go a
long way in ease of doing business in India and to realize
the Prime Minister’s dream of India being amongst top 50
economies of world.

PRIVACY
HANDSamera-equipped smartphones, laptops and other
Cdevices make it possible to share ideas and images
with anyone, anywhere, often in real-time. But in
our cameras-everywhere culture, the risk of accidentally
leaking sensitive information is growing.
Computer scientists at Duke University have developed
software that helps prevent inadvertent disclosure of trade
secrets and other restricted information within a camera’s
field of view by letting users specify what others can see.
A video chat with collaborators, customers or suppliers
outside of the office, for example, could reveal confidential
product plans drawn on a whiteboard in the background, or
sales figures or source code on nearby computer screens.
Using a smartphone to scan a receipt for expense purposes
could also expose portions of meeting notes, pill bottles,
and other personal items on your desk.
“There are more and more cameras every year. They’re
incredibly useful,” said Landon Cox, an associate professor
of computer science at Duke. “But the downside is we’re
now converting large swaths of our surroundings to a digital
format that’s easy to access and share, including things we
might not want to be digitizing.”
The simplest way to ensure privacy is to disable the camera
or microphone when sensitive information is in the frame,
Cox said.
But rather than all or nothing, the researchers wanted to
give users more granular control over which objects in the
camera's view are shared and which are kept private.
Prior efforts to safeguard confidential information in photos
and video use a “blacklist” approach. Developers anticipate
things that users might want to hide, and build software that
blurs or masks them in each frame.
July 2018|30
Editor’s Choice
34. But coming up with an exhaustive list of potentially
troublesome objects is virtually impossible. “Things that
some people consider sensitive might not be sensitive to
you,” said assistant professor of computer science Ashwin
Machanavajjhala, who co-authored the research. “It’s hard
to build something that covers all possible scenarios.”
Even for objects that security technology has blacklisted in
advance, building software that detects and conceals them
quickly and consistently under changing light conditions
and motion-induced blur has proven challenging.
“Even if it fails just 1 or 2 per cent of the time, it’s not
secure,” said co-author Animesh Srivastava, a graduate
student at Duke.
So the team tried a different strategy. Instead of relying on a
developer’s best guesstimate of which objects should be
“public” and which should be “private,” the researchers set
things up so that the user makes that determination. And
instead of choosing what to hide, the user chooses what to
reveal.
“If we get it right, hopefully it will lead to something that’s
more secure and easier to use,” Cox said.
The researchers presented two examples of their approach
on June 28 at the 14th International Conference on Mobile
Systems, Applications, and Services (MobiSys 2016) in
Singapore.
One is designed to protect sensitive information on two-
dimensional surfaces such as whiteboards and computer
presentation slides.
In both cases, users select the part of a scene that is OK to
share by drawing a rectangular border around it, either by
hand or with a few clicks of a mouse.
Once it knows what it’s looking for, the software intercepts
all incoming frames from the video stream and rapidly
scans frame by frame for a match using computer vision
technology.
Only authorized objects are allowed to pass from the
camera to third-party software, like smartphone apps.
Everything else is blocked out by default.
“The key challenges in designing these systems were to
ensure that the marking process was easy for the users, and
that detecting public regions did not slow down the camera
output or the smartphone,” Machanavajjhala said.
In one user study, the researchers asked 26 people to use
Android smartphones to scan QR codes—the square-shaped
barcodes that are becoming increasingly popular in
ads—with and without the new security features. The
participants rated the speed and ease of the cameras on the
“secure” smartphones on par with unmodified smartphones.
The team also tested their security software on videos shot
when the camera was in motion. They found they could
reliably safeguard sensitive regions while still delivering 24
frames per second, fast enough for human eyes to perceive
a smooth moving picture rather than a flickering image on a
screen.
This isn’t the ultimate solution to image privacy protection,
Machanavajjhala said. The software doesn’t protect things
caught by cameras outside a person’s control, for example.
If you’re just walking around on the street, and you want to
ensure that your face isn’t captured, this won’t work, he
said.
But in the future, the team hopes their research will
encourage technology companies to design and develop
products that give users more privacy when it comes to
their own devices.
In the meantime, they are looking into ways of giving users
similarly fine-grained privacy controls over audio
recordings in addition to images, by allowing third parties
to hear only certain voices, words or noises in an audio
stream, for example.
“People are going to want some way to control the
information that things like microphones and motion
detectors and other sensors have access to in a much
smarter way than just turning them on or off,” Cox said.
“These kinds of issues are going to be really important to
figure out over the next decade.”

42. Security Robots
The use of security robots for physical security and
surveillance operations are expected to be one of the next
big things in security industry. Robots are already been
used in manufacturing industries for transporting special
containers of several hundred kilograms and delivering
supplies from store room to the manufacturing wards. The
concept of security robots are now being used in the world,
Knightscope K5, a security robot designed to patrol malls,
campuses, and parking lots, replacing the need for human
security guards.
Artificial Intelligence for Facial and Behavioral
Recognition
Artificial intelligence is now widely used to do almost
everything from predicting the weather to piloting
autonomous cars and more. AI is now being applied to
video surveillance systems that promise to prevent criminal
activity by predicting prominent criminal offenses. There
are some AI software which monitors people in real-time
and observes micro-expressions that can belie a person’s
wicked intentions. These technologies can be used to
recognize certain behavioral patterns and capture faces
against criminal databases. It also helps to improve
efficiency and ensure staff safety and reduce the potential
for unauthorized access to certain areas.
Cloud based Video Surveillance
This system allows users to store, record, play, manage, and
monitor surveillance footage in the cloud. In cloud based
video surveillance, the IP cameras are installed at the
desired location and users can access footage or cameras
from anywhere at any time through a desktop, laptop or
mobile device. Specially, for small and medium businesses,
cloud-based solutions have surged in popularity as cloud
based security systems is more efficient and more
affordable. It can store more data and is more secured, more
efficient and more affordable. Moreover, with the tamper
detection feature on IP surveillance camera can send an
alert notification when the camera is tampered with. If
someone hit the camera down or blocking its view, the
notification will be sent to log into the video management
system and check the camera immediately to see what
happened.
Drone Surveillance Systems
Drone is a perfect air surveillance option and is truly a
game changing technology in the Physical Security
industry. The drones can collect huge amounts of footage
that human analysts cannot keep up. Drones combined with
face recognition, object recognition, and other tracking
technologies that can performs autonomous security tasks
such as crime deterrence, situational awareness and chasing
criminals, and more. Now, drones provide highly advanced
surveillance with extraordinary features such as night
vision, no-line-of-sight operation, autonomous operation,
and behavioral detection.
Moreover, the military drones can stay in the air the hours
for hours or days at a time. Such drones with high-tech
cameras can scan entire cities and almost read easily
anything from the almost 60,000 feet. This unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs) or drone technology will shape the
physical security sector.
UHD Surveillance Cameras
Ultra-high definition (UHD) surveillance cameras are
widely used as they provide a significant improvement and
clearer images. The traditional CCTV cameras often
provide blurry results without a variety of different features
other than filming and recording. UHD cameras can offer
4K image resolutions and can come with features such as
motion detection and night vision modes. Such security
camera videos help to see things clearly almost 20 meters
away with clarity and details like the plate number of
moving cars and the people's facial features and more.
Organizations and enterprises have started using such
multiple connected UHD cameras for their security
operations and this trend seems likely to continue in future.
Data Analytics
Today, Big Data, Internet of Things and physical security
are inseparably connected. Predictive data analytics in
physical security allows organizations to get all the physical
security data in organized way beyond traditional reporting
and can be used to predict physical security operations and
possible security risks. Manual analysis of such huge data
from the various security systems to detect the incidents can
be a time consuming exercise. Security organizations need
is to leverage the data analytics in security processes and
operations to get actionable results and comprehensive
insights. Predictive Security analytics allows predicting and
preventing possible threats based on contextual analysis of
data from multiple security devices and systems.
Exciting new technologies are changing the world of safety
and security. These technologies are exponentially superior
and have significant capabilities to give the best outcomes
and will certainly make a difference as far as security is
concerned.

44. INFLUENCE OF DIGITAL COMMUNITY
IN THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW
Today there is nothing that is not digital ranging
from information to leading a digital life. Internet
has bridged the gap and has been successful in
bringing the digital community on a single platform. The
digital community is constantly evolving and influencing
the Intellectual Property Laws and is bringing on the table
various Intellectual Property related legal issues. This
article intents to showcase some of them.
Information available on the internet
Lots of information are available on the internet and can be
accessed by a click of a button. Considering the nature of
internet, it is a challenge to distinguish between free
information and copyrighted information. Often, this free
flow of information raises various intellectual property
related legal issues including copyright issues.
Privacy vs. Piracy
Most of the people live a digital life today making use of
various social networking sites and platforms. Many a time
people post lot of information, images, videos etc on the
myth that such posts are private. There are various policies
governing the privacy in the digital community. However,
most of these platforms do not have effective measures to
curb piracy thereby posing challenges to the rights of the
intellectual property owners.
“# Hashtag”
Large number of digital communities enable you to create
“#Hashtag” under any name. However, these “#Hashtags”
pose various trademark related issues like passing off,
trademark dilution to name a few. The very nature of these
“#Hashtags” raises legal challenges to the intellectual
property laws.
“CTRL+A, CTRL+C, CTRL+V”
These are the favourite 3 keys of any user in the digital
community. They denote cut, copy and paste. Given the
easiness in the option to use these 3 keys raise number of
intellectual property related legal issues including copying
information, pictures, content, available in the digital
community without seeking the approval and authorisation
from the owners of the intellectual property.
Pirated Policies
The internet law mandates that any platform, website,
application operating in the digital community have policies
like privacy policy, terms of use, user agreements etc.
However, the policies made available on large number of
platforms, websites, applications are pirated. In order to
comply with one law people are violating another law.
However, many people are unaware that these policies form
a part of intellectual property and are protected by the
copyright laws.
Movie/Game, Images /Scenes with funny comments
With the flexibility made availability in the digital
community lot of times the screen shots from various
movies scenes or games are often used as a piece of joke by
adding funny captions or quotations thereof. However, the
same also gives rise to intellectual property related legal
issues including copyright issues, trademark issues etc.
Patent Protection in digital community-a challenge in
