● Ernest was born August 30 1871, in New Zealand
● He had 12 brothers and sisters including himself
● His father James had little education and it was hard
for him to support such a large family
● His Mother Martha was a school teacher

nucleus
Rutherford and his team discovered
the nucleus, the dense center of the
atom.

4. How he discovered
it
Him and his team shot particles at gold
foil and noticed some went through but
some bounced off.

6. What Did Ernest
Contribute To The
Atom?
Rutherford overturned J.J. Thomson’s theory of
the atom in 1911. He showed that the atom
actually had a heavy and a light nucleus

7. Interesting facts ● The element Rutherfordium was named in his
honor.
● On his birth certificate his name was misspelled
and technically his name is “Earnest”
Rutherford.
● He was knighted in 1914
● Has a Noble Prize for Physics
● He was denied permission to teach each time he
applied for a job.
