29. NACGRAB 2017 Achieved Milestone
S/N 2017 Activities Remarks
A Output 2.1.2: At least one fully functional scalable temporary
Immersion Bioreactor system TIBS established in Nigeria (at
NACGRAB, UI or NRCRI) and in Ghana at CRI by end of year
2018
Achieved
1 NACGRAB will supply NRCRI with TC and TIBs plantlets to plant
the aeroponics system (40 tables of 49 holes each). These virus
and disease free TC or TIBS plantlets should be produced from
the three yam varieties to be promoted in YIIFSWA-II.
Achieved
2 NACGRAB should be in the position to supply the needs of the
private seed company in initial plantlets to plant their
aeroponics system.
Achieved for 2017
3 Purchase all needed materials and chemicals to ensure the
effective running and functionally of TIBs at NACGRAB.
Achieved for 2017
30. Other NACGRAB 2017 Milestones
4 Contribute in the development of formal yam
seed system in Nigeria through supply of first
generation of plantlets.
Achieved for 2017
B Output 2.1.6: Context/Sahel has developed,
demonstrated, and trained researchers at NRCRI
and CRI on business model for pre-basic planting
material using TIBs. (Business components).
IITA/Context
C Output 2.1.7: Capacity for phytosanitary cleaning
and protection of in vitro plants (TC and TIBs),
aeroponics, vines and tubers established through
training and best-practices among NARIs and
private sector producing the pre-basic, basic seed
production in Nigeria and Ghana.

31. ONGOING ACTION/S
• Acclimatization / Weaning
• Continuation of in vitro
Regeneration and
Multiplication of Clean
Yam Varieties
• Plan towards continuous
delivery of certified
clean yam seedlings.
32. Limitations
Contamination of Cultures
(TIBs & CTC)
Contamination of cultures is
being experienced continuously
especially in TIBs.
Post-flask Loss of Yam
Seedlings due to
Unfavorable Ecological
Conditions.
Seedlings were lost to abrupt weather change during
acclimatization & weaning.
33. Limitations
Ongoing Industrial Action
Man-power mobilization
becomes challenging as the
staff need to strike a balance
between union demands &
survival of the project by
working at odd hours.
34. Recommendations
Scaling up a SETTIS Bioreactor
facility for sustaining Yam
production in NACGRAB
This will enhance
productivity
Scaling up of Alternative
Power Generating Equipment
Procurement of Solar
panels to compliment
inverter & serve as
source of electric power
to charge batteries.
35. CONCLUSION
At NACGRAB,
irrespective of the
challenges,
we are intensifying
our efforts in
achieving
the delivery of the
objectives of
YIIFSWA-II i.e.
production of large
quantity of clean
yam seedlings.
