Recommendations towards greener ICT 4ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels The ICTFOOTPRINT.eu proposition is… A first set of recommendations, focusing on aspects related to methodologies and their implementation Dedicated to green ICT rather than ICT for green Intended for the European Commission Covering – but not limited to – policy aspects The recommendations are organized between three categories 1. Increase awareness and knowledge on ICT environmental impacts 2. Convince ICT stakeholders of benefits from reduced ICT impacts 3. Facilitate commitment to a greener ICT sector

Increase awareness and knowledge on ICT environmental impacts 5ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels Make awareness raising possible among targeted audience(s) Have adequate methodologies to encourage assessment of environmental impacts Increase knowledge of impacts thanks to better data availability 2 scenarios: - Data does not exist yet - Data is not collected / shared yet (e.g. traceability of waste flows) 1. Need for convergence, consistency and complementarity between existing methods 2. Need for new methodologies, on specific targets or topics (e.g. PEFCR) Content available for general public, private organisations, as educational material, etc.

Convince ICT stakeholders of benefits from reduced ICT impacts 6ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels Showcase quantified benefits Enhance networking between stakeholders Promote use of purchasing tools (e.g. labels) in purchasing activities Starting with public organisations, then extended to other stakeholders - At regional, MS and EU levels - Network targeting a specific group of actors or a broader audience Potential benefits: reduced environmental footprint, economic savings, better image & marketing, competitive advantage, etc.

Facilitate commitment and actions to a more environmental-friendly ICT sector 6ICTFOOTPRINT.eu Final event – 17th January 2019, Brussels Turn providers into actors towards greener ICT Turn users into actors towards greener ICT Continuous communication and training on the topic Develop dedicated policy incentives - Potential topics: reuse, eco-design, etc. - Through regulatory, financial, etc. E.g. thanks to accessible assessment tools E.g. thanks to purchasing tools (labels) and awareness raising among users & providers Develop green ICT strategy at MS & EU levels and integrate it to digital strategies
