Welcome to My Portfolio
The writing presented here is a combination of internship and coursework
assignments, as well as publications. Through these selections, I aim to
illustrate the many facets of my writing ability. I believe these selections will
properly showcase not only my writing skills, but various facets of my
personality, my passions and work ethic, and especially my love for design.
The internship documents provided are samples of work I contributed for an
author named Trish Blackwell. As an intern for Trish Blackwell, I utilized my
writing education in various ways for her website and online materials, books
and social media platforms. The ambitious and inspirational Ms. Blackwell is a
multifaceted entrepreneur who not only publishes self-help books, but also
hosts a top-rated podcast, offers life-coaching and has spent her life dedicated
to fitness and competitive athletics.
Not only did I refine my writing skills while under her wing, but I now have a
greater understanding and capability to operate in the areas of marketing and
public relations as well. On a personal-development level, by utilizing her
coaching systems, I truly believe I gained a stronger resilience regarding my
potential in the working-world and beyond. The 300+ hours I spent
collaborating with Trish has molded me into a more confident and driven
individual, and I believe that what I have gained, beyond the credit hours, is
priceless.

Internship Work
Internship Job Application
Before I became an intern for Trish Blackwell, I was a long standing fan of her
motivational and inspirational podcast “Confidence on the Go.” I took the
initiative to propose becoming an intern for her via e-mail. Before I began
working for her, Trish Blackwell was a one-woman-show. However, with the
timing of her first child due within weeks of my internship start-date, and my
eloquent appreciation for her mission, she accepted my offer.
Just two weeks into my internship, I realized that there were ample writing
opportunities to go around. On top of various writing projects, I took it upon
myself to seek more interns for future semesters. I began researching
universities with similar Professional Writing Programs, as well as shifting the
job description to fit other applicable areas like marketing and nutrition.
The goal with writing this job description is to highlight all the benefits that
come with working for Ms. Blackwell, while also attracting the right candidate.
Subsequently, I handled the initial e-mails, wrote the application
questionnaire, and conducted the first interview via Skype.
I intended to introduce this document in the beginning so that readers can
gain a sense of what my objectives were as an intern, as well as a self-
appointed recruiter.

E-mail to Professionals
One main writing project for Trish Blackwell was soliciting a podcast interview
swap with other popular podcast hosts.
I made an inquiry to Mr. Lewis Howes, Host of
the “School of Greatness” because his show
shares many similar objectives with Trish
Blackwell’s podcast “Confidence on the Go.”
They are both young, impressive athletes,
entrepreneurs and life coaches, who strive to
educate their listeners in the category of self-improvement. Lewis Howes has
amassed a gigantic following on his social media platforms including 50,000+
likes on his Facebook page, nearly 100,000 followers on Twitter, and 60,000+
followers on Instagram.
Through this letter, I was able to connect with Mr. Howes’ manager and
received a positive response. Lewis will be a guest on Trish’s Podcast in late
Fall when he releases his new book. I began listening to “The School of
Greatness” six months prior to writing the e-mail. It was important to express
genuinely as a fan why I found the show helpful. The main goal was to
illustrate their similarities and express the mutual benefits of their
collaboration.
This benefits Trish in two ways: having a guest on her show creates fresh
dialogue and perspective for her listeners. Furthermore, she is aware that her
style and topics can sometimes be more feminine-focused. Trish is
intentionally seeking ways to deliver content that is relevant to both genders.
Also, appearing on another podcast as a guest, increases Trish’s exposure and
ultimately results in broader brand awareness.
Other types of formal emails included:
Inquiries to universities proposing internship opportunities
Letters to national companies requesting sponsorship
Preliminary interview screening with potential internship candidates

Dear Lewis:
I am reaching out to you today because my life has been truly
enriched by your podcast. Your show and guests have all lent a
hand in helping me to unlock some of my life’s most
challenging mental puzzles. The best part of listening to your
show is knowing there is an entire community of like-minded
people who share my desire to seek the Greatness within.
Thankfully, I can say I have something in return for you, for the
countless hours of wisdom you have offered me since I started
tuning in six months ago. She is a fellow podcaster who shares much in common with you.
Trish Blackwell is an author, confidence/ fitness coach, entrepreneur, elite endurance
athlete, and most importantly, someone who knows her definition of Greatness.
Trish Blackwell’s guidance has three main facets: Mind, Movement and Meaning. With
each week’s recording, she frees her listeners of any negative thinking, redirects them
towards their true potential, and calls them to take action. She has an abundance of
inspirational quotes, helpful resources and tips, and most importantly, positive and
motivational energy.
Just like you, Trish is an advocate for dreaming big and living life passionately within the
moment. Her genuine compassion enables her to help others, like me, realize their limitless
capabilities. What I find most compelling about Trish as a leader, is the courageous way she
discloses her own vulnerabilities. Her willingness to give hope to others compels her to
share her own struggles and hardships, even those that are painful to relive. You have done
the same Lewis, and I cannot possibly tell you how much of an impact that makes on the
people who look up to you.
I believe that the two of you have much to offer each other. Since you asked your listeners to
put you in touch with people who parallel your thought process, I thought I’d give you a
shout. Please feel free to contact me, or Trish directly, if you’d like to get to know her and
possibly have her on the show.
Sincerely,
Alicia Ceccarelli
Be you, be free.

Blog Article
It is with great privilege and pride that I was able to transform from a fan of
TrishBlackwell.com, to a contributing writer.
There were many opportunities within my internship to write articles ranging
from health & fitness, to self-reflection, and even concepts like happiness.
Some had a more authoritative and educational tone, while others were more
personal and almost poetic. This blog article was meant to be helpful to online
readers who are looking for expertise and wisdom when it comes to making
better nutritional choices. Trish Blackwell’s audience is comprised of affluent,
busy professionals who are juggling their careers and families, and are striving
to maximize their potential in all areas of life.
Trish’s readers wants to make better choices for themselves and their families,
and are looking to find real answers from someone they trust.
In this piece, my goal was to offer insight into some of the misconceptions
about nutrition. Many people who are striving to make positive changes in
their diets are being deceived. I first began researching this topic for a final
seminar project in Advanced Composition, in spring of ‘14. My focus of study
was to inform and discuss the epidemic of obesity in America, with special
focus on children. Through this research, I learned about the deceptive
measures that food companies go through to re-package or mislabel their food
as healthy, instead of taking any real measures to modify their recipes.
This proved to be a well-received article for Trish’s readers.

6 “Healthy Foods” That Aren’t Healthy
So you’ve decided to make a weight loss
goal for yourself this year. Congratulations,
you’ve taken the first and most important
step to a healthier you. You have resolved to
exercise more, drink more water, get the rest
your body needs, and most importantly, eat
right. Of course, you will limit high-sugar
and high-fat foods like cookies, cake and ice
cream from your regular diet and save for
special occasions. From now on, you are
committed to eating healthy foods and I
support it. But beware that some foods are
posing as health foods but are actually
misleadingly labeled. Without a warning
you could stifle all your progress.
Here are some foods that seem healthy, and/or may be highly nutritious, but are not
optimal for weight loss:
1.) Veggie Chips/Sticks
While these snacks contain more nutrients than regular potato
chip, like vitamin A, they can still contain 130 calories in just an
ounce. If this is your replacement, it is the better option with a
1/3 less calories and no saturated fat, but you still need to limit
your portion. These are not a completely guilt-free snack. Try
cutting some thin French-fry-sized celery, cucumber, peppers,
or zucchini for true guilt-free snacking anytime.
2.) Sushi
Fresh fish, veggies, and super-nutritious nori
(the seaweed wrapper,) what could be wrong
with this? While sushi is as delicious as it is
beautiful, some elements of this artful
Japanese cuisine are counterproductive to
losing weight. The white rice for one,
qualifies as empty calories and concentrated carbohydrates. Even if you order brown rice
with your roll, there are other factors to consider; “Crunchy” rolls may use deep-fried,
tempura battered shrimp or seafood which is high in saturated fat and calories (these can
average around 500+ calories per roll.) What about that delectable orange sauce that is
drizzled over the “spicy” rolls? This sauce is typically mayonnaise based, and so are similar
11. 10
sauces like wasabi aioli (+100 calories and 13g of fat per roll). It may be a good idea to avoid
the Philadelphia and other classic rolls that use cream cheese as an ingredient (+50 Calories
per roll). Even low sodium versions of soy sauce can cause you to retain water and anything
labeled “miso” is saturated with sodium too. Ask to substitute cucumber in place of the rice,
or ask the chef to go lighter on the rice, and make sure your roll has plenty of veggies.
3.) Energy Drinks
You may need a boost before a workout, but some energy drinks amount to
300 calories per can. That’s three miles of jogging before you even set foot out
the door. Ask yourself if it is worth it for what you intend to burn, and if you
aren’t working out that day reach for a green tea or black coffee to perk you
up. Beware that any type of caffeine can cause cravings (which could lead to
binging) and energy crashes. Your best plan is to maybe just take a few of the
supplements like Vitamin B12 and B6 in pill form and eat some long
sustaining energy foods before your workout, like a handful of almonds. If you
must indulge in liquid energy, choose an all-natural, low calorie brand like
Bing Cherry Energy Drink, (only 40 calories per can.)
4.) Sports Drinks
Don’t be fooled, this is sugar water. Sports drinks
are intended to replenish electrolytes during long
endurance events. Unless you are consuming your
daily-recommended amount of pure, hydrating
water, don’t reach for these. As a post workout
beverage, you can treat yourself, but it may be wise
to dilute the beverage to optimize your intake of
H20. Coconut water is a terrific, all natural
alternative with the same electrolyte properties and
virtually half the sodium, carbs and sugar.
5.) Diet Sodas, Diet Teas & Artificial Sweeteners
These need to be eliminated right away for fast results.
Studies show that people who consume artificial sweeteners
have numbed receptors to the sweetness of foods. This
means that if you are used to drinking diet sodas or use
artificial sweeteners in your daily coffee, that piece of
frosted office party cake will not satiate you as much
compared to those who consume natural sweeteners. This
leaves you liable to overconsumption. Even fruit will not be as pleasurable. These are also
12. 11
linked to diabetes and heart disease. A better idea is to simply challenge your dependency
on sugar in your diet altogether. Then when it’s time to treat yourself to an occasional post-
workout chocolate milk, or hand dipped ice-cream with the kids, you’ll truly be in heaven
with your sensible portion. http://www.doctoroz.com/episode/new-dangers-artificial-
sweeteners
6.) “Low-Fat” and “Light” Packaged Snacks
Look closely at these nutrition labels. How do you think the
manufacturer is compensating for the decreased use of
butter in your muffin, or fat in your fat-free yogurt? Yep,
more artificial (or regular) sweetener. Most nonfat and light
versions of your favorite packaged foods come within 5-30
calories when all is said and done, so you might as well enjoy the real deal. This is the basic
and ingenious mentality behind “The Skinny, Sexy Mind: The Ultimate French Secret” -
http://www.trishblackwell.com/books/.
Greek yogurt is an exception as the non-fat
version is packed with protein and contains
minimal carbs in comparison to other non-fat
yogurts. Keep a huge tub in your fridge, freeze half
in an ice cube tray for smoothies, and use the rest
in place of sour cream/mayo. Here’s a few more
ideas: Sweeten with honey and top with almonds
and fruit for parfaits, or whip into your egg yolks for
the fluffiest scrambled eggs ever. There is even
Greek frozen yogurt in grocery store freezers.
Guard yourself against all these seemingly
little decisions and their big consequences.
You are working hard to get the results you
have been dreaming of, and it would be a
shame to let these misconceptions spoil your
progress. Good luck.

Technical Writing
While Trish Blackwell has received over 350,000 downloads for her podcast,
she still wanted to make sure she could reach beyond Apple, and into Android
platforms as well. Not only did I research and contact companies to add her
show through her RSS feed, but I was responsible for creating the step-by-step
guide. It needed to be over-explanatory so that even the least computer savvy
person (think Grandma) can access her show through their smart phone.
All of these instructions are available within the Podcast page of her website.
Some of the concepts I kept in mind were to be mindful of the overuse of the
word “you” and to utilize pictures and symbols as much as possible. I even
went as far as to erase Trish’s podcast from my phone so that I could
experience the downloading process and collect proper screenshots as if I was
a first-timer.
This project was important to expanding the reach of her listeners since
Android users comprise a rising 9% over all compared to Apple at nearly 29%.
An increase in Trish’s downloads by one third would be a remarkable
accomplishment and requires little-to-no effort other than becoming accessible
in the first place.
Adding the Writing a Review section was important because the amount of
reviews increases the search engine population by putting Trish’s podcast
toward the top. Essentially, the more great ratings a show receives, the more
likely the search engine is to promote and recommend the podcast. This helps
Trish receive new listeners to stumble upon her show, like I did.

Writing a Review
If you enjoy the show, and think it could benefit others like yourself, the best way to
help them to find the podcast is by leaving a great review. You can simply leave a
star rating, or add some comments that will help others decide if it is right for them.
Here are some ideas:
List what you find interesting
Explain what you enjoy
Tell us how it impacts your life
1. Underneath the podcast picture where all the episodes are listed there are three
boxes named Details, Reviews, and Related. Select Reviews.
2. Here you can read what others wrote for more inspiration. Click on the purple
words Write a Review.
3. Enter your Apple Password. The rest is up to you…

Social Media
Facebook
One of the ways Trish Blackwell acquires new readers, listeners, and ultimately
clients, is through email acquisition. She utilizes her Facebook presence by
offering those who are browsing free content in exchange for their email in
which they subscribe to her weekly newsletter.
My assignment was to write and design a clean-eating, printable shopping list
that could help nutrition-conscious readers make smart and savvy grocery
choices.
The initial picture is what you would see when you click on the link from
Facebook. The following image is the actual list for subscribers to utilize.
18. 17
Instagram
During my internship, one of my main responsibilities was to promote and
grow three distinct facets of Trish Blackwell’s Instagram presence. Trish
Blackwell approaches coaching in three separate but related facets: Mind,
Movement, and Meaning. In just a few short months, I had acquired over 500
followers in each of the accounts.
Having three different Instagram accounts helps her followers stay engaged by
offering them the exact content for which they are looking, without anything
they would find unnecessary.
Trish’s “Mind” account, called “ Gardenyourthoughts” offers mental insights
into subjects like success and confidence.
Her second account for Movement related content, called “Trainthetemple,”
focuses on fitness and healthy eating.
Another aspect of Trish’s coaching is her Meaning Instagram, called
“Growthwithgod.” This account guides followers to connect with their
spirituality for healing and personal growth.
Here is a snap shot of some of the Instagram content I created for one or more
of these accounts.
Some content was created or shared specifically for one account while others
were shared and relevant across all three.
I used a variety of design platforms from simple smartphone apps like Pic
Collage and Word Swag, to more sophisticated software like InDesign or
Canva.
These ads can relate to the theme of the account or work as a promotion for
her coaching services, promotions, or upcoming podcast topics.
22. 21
Pinterest
All of these Instagram images were redesigned to fit a 4 x 5 ratio that is proven
most popular on Pinterest and shared in various relevant categories on the
Pinterest application as well. All Pinterest content was embedded with a link to
Trish’s site.

Professional Writing Work
Writing and Designing Newsletters
The coursework I have produced in Desktop Publishing was the most
challenging and rewarding at the same time. This course introduced me to the
application of InDesign software, which launched a new outlet for my
creativity. As a subscriber to the software, (and the entire Adobe Cloud) I have
become intimately acquainted with the capabilities of this program, and
benefit from the many ways it enhances my offerings as a writer.
This particular assignment was to create a two-page newsletter that required
an originally written research article, original logo, and demonstration of
proficiency with building tabs and tables. This proficiency parallels many
other software systems and has improved my utilization of Word as well.
By subscribing to the software, I accelerated my proficiency and continue to
use InDesign any chance I get, both in my personal and professional life.
InDesign has served me in creating various forms of visual content in my
internship as well.
This topic of Slow Food as a movement back into home-cooked and
sustainable eating is a true burning passion of mine. I believe the world will be
a better place once people commit to spending more quality time in the
kitchen and at their dinner tables. You will find certain facets of my personality
and values in nearly every element of this newsletter.
This was printed on an eco-friendly paper for added effect, please use your
imagination.

Magazine Writing: Travel Log
The audience I aim for would be a Sky Mall magazine feature or similar Travel
Magazine where the affluent, Frequent-Flyers are deciding where to take their
families or impress their significant other on their next extravaganza. Since
Naples is a city surrounded by the lavish and luxurious, I played up the details
into a fairytale style that is just a bit informative for a first-time Naples tourist.
This is my favorite type of long-form writing. The criticism I received
regarding this piece was that usually travel writers do not typically stay at the
big corporate hotels or companies. They tend to visit smaller, locally owned
establishments to give readers a taste of the area that is more unique.
Exceptions were made since the college budget limits one’s ability to vacation
for an assignment. This is an article written in the style of a travel log, meaning
the reader is following the traveler’s itinerary throughout the trip from the first
wake-up call, to the turning down of the sheets. I used my experiences, my
memories, and filled it in with research through websites and videos to
compile this dream getaway.

48 Hours in Naples, Florida
By Alicia Ceccarelli
Welcome to Naples
When you step out of the airport in Naples, Florida, your eyes will be dazzled by bright blue
skies, tropical green palms and the golden glow of Florida sunshine. Depending on the month of
your trip, the warmth and humidity could be a welcome to the frosted bones of northern
residents, or a stifling, wet suffocation that causes make-up to run and running shorts to cling.
The blazing heat may take some getting used to, but it is precisely why the frozen margarita was
invented.
There is one unforgettable place to stay in Naples. In 2014, Conde Naste Traveler Magazine
listed The Ritz Carlton as a Platinum Winner for World’s Best Hotels. Here you will find a rare
brand of hospitality combined with unparalleled luxury. With such an outstretching of amenities
and premium beachfront access, there is literally no reason to leave the premises-but we will!
Swing your car through the roundabout, past lengthy rows of statuesque palm trees and a
terracotta multilevel fountain that matches the towering rooftops ahead. In the valet area, your
camera-less paparazzi awaits to refresh you with icy-cold bottled water as they escort you inside.
You are a celebrity upon arrival, royalty in your room and the CEO on the grounds, regardless of
your perceived financial status. Hotel attendants cannot thank you enough for your stay or offer
more comforts and conveniences to enhance your experience. Their genuine smiles beam from
ear-to-ear and confirm the rare but true statement: “I absolutely love my job.” This aspect of
upper-echelon hospitality is a breath of fresh air. Your stroll through the grand lobby, past the
chandeliers, lush seating areas and velvet-draped windows, offer your first peek at the stunning
ocean beyond.
Check into your ocean-view suite with hand written greetings from the staff. Should they
become privy to a special occasion (perhaps a wedding or honeymoon) you could walk into a
surprising sight of heart-shaped coral and yellow flower petals on your bedding and a chilled
bottle of champagne to kick off your celebration, courtesy of your new friends at the Ritz.
Go ahead and open French doors to your killer view of the gulf. Let the breeze make its way
through your suite and step onto your balcony to gaze at the expansive swirling shaped pool and
cabana area below. A deep breath of ocean-scented air can cool any troubles that may await you
back home. The cerulean umbrellas and adjustable lounge chairs are calling your name from 10
stories below. Slap on your sun block, grab your swim wear and start drenching yourself in the
rays.
Let’s Hit the Pool
There are child-interactive areas of the expansive winding pool, as well as the main family area
and an additional relaxation pool (This is where cannon balls are generally frowned upon.) A
shaded Tiki-inspired bar and café offers an assortment of chilled concoctions, both kid-friendly
28. 27
or with a kick. A Ritz Carlton cocktail requires premium ingredients and liquors, the freshest-cut
fruit and squeezed juices, and of course, edible garnishes for that “wow” factor. We recommend
their signature, “Trouble in Naples.” A twist on the classic Piña Colada, it combines premium
light rum blended with coconut and juicy pineapple, plus tropical banana liqueur and a sinful
floater of rich toasty dark rum to boot. Slurp the heavenly creaminess though the extra-wide
straw or sip the melting liquid thinning from the top, just take it slow enough to avoid brain
freeze. Sun-kissed servers will gladly bring your order to your chairs, heck, they’ll probably
wade out into the water if that’s where you wish to be served, khaki’s and all.
Turn your day at the pool into the main event by renting a cabana complete with a wealth of
amenities including lunch for four delivered from the café, a personal butler, a fully-stocked mini
bar with your N/A beverage preferences, sun blocks/tanning oils, magazines, snacks, an I-pod
docking station and a 26” flat screen.
Just beyond the pool area, lies the wooden bridge and pathway to the ocean, but save the
sandiness for tomorrow. After a sun-and-rum-induced-nap, it is time to catch your second wind,
because Southwest Florida dining and nightlife awaits your presence.
Exploring Famous 5th
Avenue
Although The Ritz offers seven different dining options with in its palace-like walls, you must
venture out to Naples’ most charming and exciting street, Fifth Avenue South. Any given time of
year you can take part in an array of exciting events from outdoor concerts and orchestra
performances, to food-and-wine festivals, and holiday parades. Between the art galleries and
one-of-a-kind- boutiques, one could window shop for hours. Taking home a work of art created
by the people who live and breathe the majesty of this city, is a perfect way to capture the
memories you will make during your stay.
Since you burned some calories swimming, you deserve to cool off with some decadent artisan
gelato. Aldeheidi’s Frozen Treats offer Gelato, Frozen Yogurt, and Fruit Ices that are 100%
organic. There is no shame in indulging by the traditional routes like chocolate or vanilla, but for
those who appreciate a culinary adventure, Aldeheidi’s offers Gelato in unique flavor
combinations like strawberry-basil, mango-chili and chocolate-lavender. Take a melting cone or
cup for a stroll to the iconic Naples pier and say good night to the sun. Let the breeze and the lull
of the ocean become your soundtrack as you witness the spectacle of reds, pinks, blues, yellows
and oranges beam from pillowing white clouds. Deep auburns, magentas and indigos will
accompany you on your walk to dinner.
Dinner at Truluck’s
Swing around to Fourth Avenue where Truluck’s lively electric blue sign, complete with a crab
emblem, showcases their passion for seafood, not just any seafood, but the most sustainable and
local varieties available. From the main dining room, all the way to their outdoor seating area,
you can hear the twinkling of piano keys accompanied by the gentle rustling of palm fronds.
Gusts from the Gulf of Mexico are so soft and soothing they won’t even put out the candle which
warms your drawn butter. Truluck’s niceties don’t end there. Before choosing tonight’s wine,
29. 28
have a little fun with their 2oz Wine Flight, in which you can sample four different selections
from their abundant list of robust reds and crisp whites.
Their menu features some innovative dishes as well as classics executed superbly. A Tuna
Tartare Tower stacked with smooth, nutty avocado, sweet crab chunks, and a zesty dynamite
sauce, is as tempting as their delicately battered salt and pepper calamari. The aroma of charred
spices and garlic is reassuring that their prime steaks are fighting for stardom in the kitchen as
well. However, the main event when dining at Truluck’s is the Florida Stone Crab Claws. At the
very top of the totem pole of crab varietals offered are the gigantic, succulent Stone Crab claws
fished from the very same waters you will be dipping in tomorrow. They arrive on your table in a
monstrous pile, mounted over a bed of ice and accompanied with a signature creamy mustard
dipping sauce. After one bite of the tender, ocean-sweetened meat, you will agree they are worth
the effort of cracking and plucking from their shell. However, you are at Truluck’s, so they
already took the time to crack them for you in such a way that enjoying your meal is effortless.
When a sharp looking, enthusiastic manager visits your table to inquire about your meal, you
may have the urge to plant a big buttery kiss on him, Bugs Bunny style. Finish with their
scrumptious homemade carrot cake. It is slathered with a tart, whipped cream-cheese frosting,
and then topped off with crunchy walnuts saturated in a caramel drizzle. With its incredibly
moist texture, you may suspect it was dunked in a bath of liquid cinnamon and vanilla before just
before it reached your plate. Order an espresso to rev your engine for a little dancing in the
moonlight.
A Night on the Town
Mercado Shops in Naples is one of the newest commercial developments in the area. Offering
the latest in entertainment, Silverspot Cinema is bringing Neapolitans a classier cinematic
experience. Not only is there a full gourmet menu available to enjoy along with your feature, but
cocktail and bottle service delivered right to your seat. Silverspot showcases many filmed opera
and theatrical performances in HD, and offers hors d’oeuvres and wine with ticket purchase.
Family themed movies are also projected on an outside screen and viewers are encouraged to
gather on the lawn, recreating that picnic-feel of the Drive-In days.
There are many places to dance the night away depending on your preference. In the same area
where outdoor movies are played, Mercato also hosts an event called Dancing Under the Stars
with a different music theme each week. The Blue Martini and Burn Cigar Lounge are two
exciting venues featuring a modern, sleek metropolitan décor with DJ’s spinning the newest in
dance and hip hop after 10 pm. Venues like Taps Wine and Beer Lounge and The Wine Loft
offer live music, mostly singular artists with a guitar and a mic, if you prefer a more relaxed
ambiance.
Good Morning
Back at the Ritz, after waking up to the whispering ocean waves, enjoy a spectacular breakfast

hours of 11 to 3 are when the sun’s rays become relentlessly strong. A visitor’s vacation can
surely be ruined by a unintended case of sun burn or sun poisoning. Reapply spf 30 or more

often and stay under your umbrella when possible. Keep your eyes peeled for adorable (and
highly intelligent) dolphins breaching the blue-green water. These majestic mammals love to
play with Jet-Skiers and chase after boats, jumping for pictures in their wake.
Exploring the City
For more wildlife adventure, take a ride down to the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens for some
educational outdoor fun. All the usual suspects are there: lions, tigers and bears. However, the
Naples Zoo also makes a home to some uncommon and often endanger species like the now
infamous Honey Badger, recently popularized by a sassy YouTube voice-over video (only
available at 3 other zoos in the country). Take the rare opportunity to get face-to-face (through
glass) with the elusive and agile Fusa, Madagascar’s largest mammalian predator who feeds on
lemurs and snakes alike. Relax with a guided boat excursion to witness some endangered
primates swinging and playing in their natural habitat including monkeys, lemurs and apes. Have
a lunch date with the world’s tallest animal: The Giraffe. These orange-spotted, meek giants will
bow their long necks to you and gently slurp lettuce from your hand with their lengthy purple-
black tongues.
The Naples Zoo is committed to the conservation of not just animal species, but all elements of
wildlife and the eco system. Check out their botanical garden with a special area created to
flourish the endangered butterfly population. Patrons can learn some great tips to create butterfly
gardens at home while snapping some frame-worthy pictures of these beautiful insects. It would
not be a Floridian zoo without snakes or alligators. Naples Zoo brings visitors up close to
alligators with hand feedings. Park-goers can participate in a Q & A session with snake handlers
from just beyond in an open snake pit. It is their goal to replace a visitor’s fear of these creatures
with an educated understanding.
Even as you exit the park, the thunderous roar from the king of the jungle can rattle you to your
primal core.
A Touch of Class
On rainier days, (and there are plenty), Naples also provides sheltered attractions such as the
Naples Museum of Art. The 30,000 square foot space with 15 galleries dedicated to sharing
prized visual art with the public. One of the most notable is the vibrant, Persian Ceiling from
world famous glass artist, Dale Chahuly. The various, bold colored, hand-blown pieces are
assembled across long stretches of the sunlit, glass-dome conservatory. Also on campus is the
Naples Philharmonic whose orchestra has accompanied Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli.
Their Broadway Series features current blockbusters like Jersey Boys and timeless classics like
Evita, which just may be the most thrilling way to spend a Saturday night indoors in this culture
rich city.
Have Your Fun and Eat it Too
Grab a night cap on the water, at the Gulf-Coast-born Bonefish Grill. This polished-casual yet
upscale seafood restaurant, uniquely serves its famously addictive Bang-Bang Shrimp. Devour
the crunchy, fried, tender bites tossed in a tangy, citrus, chili sauce stacked in an impressive

pyramid, topped with scallion confetti and accompanied by two sets of nifty chopsticks. This
spicy crowd-pleaser is often imitated but never quite duplicated by local and national
competition. The marble bar top boasts a particularly cool technical feature: A frosty rail
designed to keep drinks cold in the hottest of climates. What is that blue glowing thing gliding
past you on a serving tray? The Hypnotic Martini, an infusion of coconut rum, pineapple juice
and Hypnotic Liquor, (an aqua blue hybrid of French vodka, exotic fruit juice, and cognac), is
garnished with a mesmerizing glow stick. Unsuspecting parents will usually have to order as
many of these drinks as they have children accompanying them.
Savor the Moments
You can spend your final hours in Naples dancing, drinking, listening to a piano vocalist, or if
you dare, a midnight-dip on the beach. Just stay in shallow waters, you never know what could
be swimming with you. Let your muscles soak in the hotel spa to give your vacationing bones
one last warming before you head back to your assumingly colder hometown. If the mood strikes
you, order a bottle of wine to re-tox while you detox; you know they will gladly bring it to you.
While you are at it, request some reading material, perhaps the local real estate guide. Maybe it is
time to break up with snow shovels and trade up to sand shovels. Maybe your all too brief
romance with the sun should become a marriage to the everyday bliss of a Naples lifestyle;
because life does not linger as long as a Florida day, (where the sun sometimes sets at 8:20 pm);
and life is much too short, to not wear shorts.

Magazine Writing: Profile
This type of writing is also a favorite of mine. With the assistance of my voice
recorder, I was able to sip beer in a bar with a talented young man who has a
pretty promising career in the entertainment industry. Getting to know Eric
and his story was fascinating and effortless. Capturing the six hour
conversation on digital memory allowed me to be in the moment with him and
also allowed him to forget that I was a journalist.
Eric, E-Class, Taylor had more character than I was able to squeeze within my
word count. However, I still had the task of highlighting what was compelling
and gear it towards a specific audience. While I first assumed this type of
feature would fit naturally within the Hip Hop and other music publications, I
decided it was best to write it for something more general like GQ or Maxim.
Writing for a broad audience of readers gave me leniency with the vernacular
and sophisticated knowledge of the music industry, specifically Hip Hop.
Although I am a fan, I am in no position to write with the specificity that a
music magazine would warrant.
My professor noted that I was successfully able to stay respectful of the profile
subject in particular, while still being able to poke a little fun at some of the
absurdities that come with the territory of the industry.
My InDesign work here shows versatility in my ability to conform to masculine
reader’s as easily as a women-centered audience like Trish Blackwell’s.

News Print Article
Working for The Keystone News Staff was both exhilarating and rewarding.
Although I was hired as a Graphic Designer, I also found myself contributing
to articles for each publication. While I never received assignments, certain
stories just seemed to come my way. Every time I pitched an idea to the staff, I
was encouraged to write and submit my articles in addition to the visual and
organizational work I was doing.
My articles were printed in various sections of the paper including: Arts and
Entertainment, Opinions, and News. This article appeared in the News
Section in the edition following Halloween of 2014.
It was written in third-person, but experienced in first person. My goal was to
ignite some excitement within the student body about the privileges there are
to contributing to The Keystone News staff. Since this article was written in
retrospect, meaning I didn’t realize I wanted to write about it until a few days
after, I relied on the other attending participants for impressions and
memories, and paired that with supplemental research about CBS.
Aaron Carter’s performance was underwhelming and lackluster to put it
mercifully. Yet, despite the emphatic support of my peers, I chose not to
include that in the article. With only so much article space, I made a conscious
decision to focus on the excitement of being in the world of a top-tier
journalism studio, and left the talent depleted mini-show for word-of-mouth.

Keystone Staff tours the CBS-3 studio
in Philadelphia
THEKEYSTONENEWS ON NOVEMBER 28, 2014
BY ALICIA CECCARELLI
On Friday, Oct. 31, five executive board members of The
Keystone Newspaper had the privilege of touring the CBS-
3 studio on a day of breaking news. The man hunt for Eric
Frein, accused of slaying a Pennsylvania state trooper and
shooting another on the run for 48 days, was finally over.
Although all media personnel at CBS were scrambling to
cover the arrest in addition to their budgeted work, The
Keystone staff was greeted with hospitality and given an
inside look at day-to-day operations.
Kristen Johanson, planning editor for CBS-Philly, introduced The Keystone crew to various
members of the media staff: writers, technicians and TV personalities. Johanson spoke highly of
the seasoned afternoon anchor of CBS 3’s Emmy award-winning news and lifestyle program,
Talk Philly, Pat Ciarrocchi. Johanson called Ciarrocchi “the godmother” of the studio, saying
the CBS team turns to her for professional and personal wisdom. Before Talk Philly went live,
Johanson gave the tourists a lesson on fact checking. She used a recent dilemma CBS about a
reported earthquake from callers and though social media in New Jersey. Johanson quizzed
their reporting skills by asking: “What is the first thing you do?” Steve Maugeri, sports editor
for The Keystone, knew the responsible answer was to verify the suspicions with the National
Geological Survey.
On the set of Talk Philly, Co-Anchor Ukee Washington and Ciarrocci, prepared to go live with
an energetic chair dance before the teleprompters began to roll. At the high top table, the
friendly duo swung their hands together while perusing their notes. “If I wasn’t sitting down
he would twirl me too,” said Ciarrocci, of their off-air chemistry. Frein was a main topic for
the afternoon show, but other local events, like the possible strike of Septa workers and
Halloween were discussed as well. Pop singer Aaron Carter stopped by to perform his new
single, “Ooh Wee,” and promote his show at District Nine that evening.
In the main broadcasting room, The Keystone members were encouraged by Ciarrocci to
experiment with the green screen and step up to the news casting desk for pictures. Eyewitness
News Weather Reporter Kate Bilo, informed the students about the realities of being a
meteorologist in a world shaped by social media. She wants her viewers to know that no one is
more committed to being accurate about the forecast as the meteorologists. Bilo receives
complaints about even the slightest weather inaccuracy. They roll into her email, twitter and
other online accounts. She said this happens even when the day turns out to be sunnier than
expected. “You have to have a tough skin in this business,” said Bilo and Ciarrocci. Ciarrocci
elaborated by saying that there is always going to be nay-sayers in a professional environment,
but especially in television and broadcasting. She encouraged the participants to pay them no
mind and to focus on their passions to take them to the top.

Newspaper Graphics
Professor Jeffrey Voccola, the current Director of the Professional Writing
Department at Kutztown University, wrote an opinionated article regarding the
laws in Pennsylvania for carrying firearms on campus. It was published in
“The Chronicle of Higher Education” in fall of 2014. The student newspaper,
The Keystone, of which I was a paid employee, republished it in our
November 30th
issue.
College campuses, unfortunately, are conducive to higher levels of violent
crime, and therefore there is cause for students to want the extra security, even
if they have to take it into their own hands. Yet, there is a huge difference
between caution/self-defense compared to aggravated assault or homicidal
rage. This was a serious article, as the conservative laws pose a threat to free
speech in the college environment.
Professor Voccola is a brilliant man who I respect immensely and who serves
his students through his dynamic and thought-provoking lecture and
discussion. Creating a graphic that was eye-catching and appropriate for the
magnitude of his concern was my ultimate goal. It was imperative that each
student contemplate where they stood on the laws that stand between their
safety and their first amendment rights.
As a graphic, nothing of its kind has ever previously been printed in The
Keystone in the many decades it has been in circulation. I spent countless
hours searching for the appropriate images to create something stunning and
memorable, something that would get people thinking deeply, along with
Professor Voccola.

Marketing Client Ad
This assignment challenged the student to create a magazine ad for a
marketing agency named Ballyhoo Creative. The only details we were given
were the contact information and the details regarding the award. It was up to
us to fill in the blanks about the firm. Here is what I wrote in my reflection:
I assumed Ballyhoo to be a “cutting edge design firm.” I imagined they were
“sharp, and liked to think outside the box.” Their campaign aim was to
captivate new clientele, perhaps even the type that has never previously
thought about contracting a design firm for their business. The goal was to
pair a catchy and witty phrase with an unforgettable picture. There was
hesitation in choosing a picture that could appeal to the masses. After, an eye
burning search on the internet, I found the right photo.
This was particularly difficult because of the nature of the business. The ad
had to scream creative and memorable since that was the business the firm
was conducting.

Magazine Short
Season Four: Episode one of “The Walking Dead”
This assignment requires the writer to review some type of consumable media
like music, book, film, television, video game, or theatre performances, in a
short, front-of-the-book style publication. The difficulty of writing these pieces
is that there needs to be a review without spoiling the experience. There is a
challenge in that the writer must entice the article reader to participate in
watching, reading, listening or playing, without giving away the magic and
mystery that makes these forms of media entertaining.
The feedback I received from my first submission was to simplify some of the
structure of my sentences, as well as the length of the overall piece. Slimming
was the right move, especially when trying to appeal to the 18-49 year-old
demographic. This audience is who advertisers are actively targeting. This
group of viewers comprised over half of the record breaking 16.1 million people
who turned in to catch episode one.
I took it one step further by designing a possible visual layout as well. This
layout, coupled with a teasing illustration of the juicy storyline of The Walking
Dead, is my humble plea to the few people left who are missing out on the
show everyone talks about. My main message from the review is not just to
give fans a taste of what is to come this season, but to invoke an open mind for
those who assume this dynamically written drama is simply about zombies.

Brochure
Dr. O’Brien placed a plain white sheet of paper on the projector for us to see,
to help us understand that this was real. The hotel where she stayed in Napa
Valley gave out this boring and nonsensical list of restaurants in the area. Our
objective was to re-package this information into an aesthetically pleasing
brochure, as well as to create a complimenting poster and post card.
While I have not been to Napa, I know that food, wine and sustainability are
their wheel houses, and took that direction here. Excel played a huge part in
organizing the information in a digestible way. I chose to present restaurants
by area and then cuisine, while my peers were able to categorize in a multitude
of other options. Here is the original document in all its ridiculousness, as well
as my end product.
