ASKING FOR AND
GIVING OPINIONS
USEFUL TIPS
Discussions are more interesting when people have different opinions on
a subject. Here are some ways to encourage a good discussion.
• To ask for people's opinions, you should use open questions starting with
Wh-question words that encourage a response: (Khi hỏi ý kiến, hãy hỏi
Ex. What do you think about cosmetic surgery? (Bạn nghĩ gì về phẫu
thuật thẩm mỹ?)
Ex. Where do you stand on giving money to beggars?
USEFUL TIPS
• When you give your own opinions, use neutral statements to make
your opinions sound less forceful: (Khi đưa ra quan điểm, hãy dùng
cách lập luận trung lập nhằm bớt tỏ ra quá hùng hổ)
Ex. In my view, everyone has the right to change their appearance. I
think / I feel / I reckon / I guess it's acceptable.
• Sometimes, giving a strong opinion makes an impact: (Trong một vài tình
Ex. I really believe that it doesn't help anyone at all.
CONVERSATIONS
Listen to these conversations between friends. (Lắng nghe những cuộc
trò chuyện này giữa những người bạn.)
Conversation 1
Neil: Do you know, I spent about two hours
yesterday just opening and answering my emails?
There were about 50 in my inbox, since 6 pm! I
think emails have made life more difficult, and not
easier at all. What do you reckon?
Sophie: I guess you're right. Emailing does seem
to have taken over our lives.
Neil: Some people say they only check email once or twice a day.
(cont.)
CONVERSATIONS
Conversation 1 ( CONT)
Sophie: If you ask me, it's a crazy idea. I mean, what if it's something
really urgent?
Neil: The way I see it, that's exactly why you should phone someone -to
get their attention immediately. If you knew your email wouldn't be read
for several hours, you wouldn't send it - you'd phone, surely.
Sophie: Yes, and in my view, that's exactly what we should start doing -
using the phone again!
Alex: But then we'd all be complaining about endless phone calls during
our working day!
Conversation 2
Lucy: What do you think about this new suggestion that criminals should
meet and apologize to their victims?
Ralph: I strongly believe it could be helpful to both people, in some cases.
But not when the crimes are serious. Personally, I wouldn't want to meet
someone who really hurt me in some way.
Lucy: What's your attitude to people working in the community then, instead
of going to prison? Are you in favor of having criminals clean the streets outside
your house, where children are playing? Because as far as I'm concerned,
criminals should be kept away from society, not allowed into it.
Ralph: I really think it depends on the crime. I know driving while drunk is a
crime, but to my mind, someone who was guilty of that crime wouldn't be a
danger working as a street cleaner.

thú, trung lập hoặc giao tiếp khéo léo.Nghe và bắt chước.)
GET SPEAKING
Ask for and give opinions in these situations. Play the Audio CD to start.
When you hear the beep, pause and respond. Use the strategy given.
1. Express your strong opinion on the subject. Ask for someone else's
opinion.
2. Express a neutral opinion on the subject.
3. Express your opinion on the subject. Make particular reference to your
individual point of view.
What subjects have you been asked to give your opinion on recently?
Was it at work or at your place of study - or during an informal discussion
with friends? Think about what you said, and write a short conversation
based on the dialogue at the beginning of this unit. Try to use all the
strategies from this unit. Then read it aloud, practicing your pronunciation
and stress. Record it, if possible, for review.
CULTURE NOTE
A very polite way of disagreeing might be to refer to a situation which calls into question
something that has been said.
Ex. A. That was the worst summer weather we've ever had!
B. People say it was pretty wet in 2005.
English speakers sometimes make a neutral statement, which shows that they
accept someone's opinion, without agreeing or disagreeing: (Người nói tiếng Anh
Ex. A: I think we'll definitely win the match.
B: Why do you think so?
Sometimes it is necessary to accept that there are disagreements. In this case, it
is better to settle an argument: (Đôi khi bạn sẽ phải chấp nhận ý kiến trái chiều.
Ex. I don't think we're going to agree on this ...
Ex. I think we're going to have to agree to disagree!

UNIT 3NG OPINIONS.pptx

  • 2. USEFUL TIPS Discussions are more interesting when people have different opinions on a subject. Here are some ways to encourage a good discussion. • To ask for people's opinions, you should use open questions starting with Wh-question words that encourage a response: (Khi hỏi ý kiến, hãy hỏi các câu hỏi mở thúc đẩy người khác phải đưa ra phản hồi) Ex. What do you think about cosmetic surgery? (Bạn nghĩ gì về phẫu thuật thẩm mỹ?) Ex. Where do you stand on giving money to beggars? (Ý kiến của anh về việc cho tiền người ăn xin là gì?)
  • 3. USEFUL TIPS • When you give your own opinions, use neutral statements to make your opinions sound less forceful: (Khi đưa ra quan điểm, hãy dùng cách lập luận trung lập nhằm bớt tỏ ra quá hùng hổ) Ex. In my view, everyone has the right to change their appearance. I think / I feel / I reckon / I guess it's acceptable. I really believe that it doesn't help anyone at all.
  • 4. CONVERSATIONS Listen to these conversations between friends. Conversation 1 Neil: Do you know, I spent about two hours yesterday just opening and answering my emails? There were about 50 in my inbox, since 6 pm! I think emails have made life more difficult, and not easier at all. What do you reckon? Sophie: I guess you're right. Emailing does seem to have taken over our lives. Neil: Some people say they only check email once or twice a day. (cont.)
  • 5. CONVERSATIONS Conversation 1 ( CONT) Sophie: If you ask me, it's a crazy idea. I mean, what if it's something really urgent? Neil: The way I see it, that's exactly why you should phone someone -to get their attention immediately. If you knew your email wouldn't be read for several hours, you wouldn't send it - you'd phone, surely. Sophie: Yes, and in my view, that's exactly what we should start doing - using the phone again! Alex: But then we'd all be complaining about endless phone calls during our working day!
  • 6. Conversation 2 Lucy: What do you think about this new suggestion that criminals should meet and apologize to their victims? Ralph: I strongly believe it could be helpful to both people, in some cases. But not when the crimes are serious. Personally, I wouldn't want to meet someone who really hurt me in some way. Lucy: What's your attitude to people working in the community then, instead of going to prison? Are you in favor of having criminals clean the streets outside your house, where children are playing? Because as far as I'm concerned, criminals should be kept away from society, not allowed into it. Ralph: I really think it depends on the crime. I know driving while drunk is a crime, but to my mind, someone who was guilty of that crime wouldn't be a danger working as a street cleaner. CONVERSATIONS

Make particular reference to your individual point of view. What subjects have you been asked to give your opinion on recently? Was it at work or at your place of study - or during an informal discussion with friends? Think about what you said, and write a short conversation based on the dialogue at the beginning of this unit. Try to use all the strategies from this unit. Then read it aloud, practicing your pronunciation and stress. Record it, if possible, for review.
  • 14. CULTURE NOTE A very polite way of disagreeing might be to refer to a situation which calls into question something that has been said. A. That was the worst summer weather we've ever had! B. People say it was pretty wet in 2005. English speakers sometimes make a neutral statement, which shows that they accept someone's opinion, without agreeing or disagreeing: (Người nói tiếng Anh có lúc đưa ra quan điểm trung lập, thể hiện việc họ thừa nhận quan điểm của người nói mà không cần đồng ý hay phản đối) Ex. A: I think we'll definitely win the match. B: Why do you think so? Sometimes it is necessary to accept that there are disagreements. In this case, it is better to settle an argument: (Đôi khi bạn sẽ phải chấp nhận ý kiến trái chiều. I don't think we're going to agree on this ... Ex. I think we're going to have to agree to disagree!
