Water & Health
Memoona Arshad (Group 11)
The Water
• There is nothing on Earth more important to life than water.
• People are having trouble getting the amount and quality of
water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing, hand washing,
and increasing food.
• Amazing progress has been made in making clean drinking
water in developed countries available to 2.6 billion people.
• That's an improvement over that period from 76 percent of the
global population to 91 percent.
• But there are still many opportunities through better sanitation
and hygiene education to multiply the benefits of clean water.
Fast facts: Global water crisis
• More than one out of every ten people on the planet, 844
million people, do not have access to healthy drinking water.
• Every day, women and girls are estimated to spend 200
million hours hauling water.
• In rural Africa, the average woman walks 6 KM every day to
carry 40 pounds of water.
• Every day, over 800 children under the age of five die from
diarrhea caused by polluted water and sanitation.
• By 2050, at least one-fourth of the world's population will be
living in a country with chronic or recurrent freshwater
shortages.
• Without access to basic sanitation, 2,3 billion people live.892
million individuals practice open defecation.
How can I help end the global water crisis?
• As a sponsor of World Vision, you will help bring clean
water to families in need.
• Over the last three years, we have delivered clean water
to more than 12.7 million people.
• With your support, our ambitions for the future are
much more optimistic, but realistic.
▫ Pray for God to shower his blessings on families who are in
dire need of clean water.
▫ Donate: Help in the provision of healthy drinking water for
children and families.
▫ In the lake, you can run or walk. May 16, 2020, to offer
clean water to children all over the world straight from your
own home or community. In the race to bring clean water
and the potential for fullness of life to children around the
world, you can also make a long-term pledge to join Team
World Vision.
Water-related Health Risks
• According to WHO:
▫ 4 percent of all accidents and 5 percent of health casualties
are caused by diarrhea worldwide. It is most often caused
by gastrointestinal infections, which annually kill around
2.2 million people worldwide, most of them children under
the age of five. The unsafe supply of water, sanitation
and hygiene is responsible for 88 percent of the burden.
▫ More than 50 states are now reporting cholera to the WHO.
▫ Cancer and tooth/skeletal damage: millions of people are
exposed to unhealthy levels of arsenic and fluoride that
naturally occur.
▫ Schistosomiasis affects an estimated 260 million people.
▫ Emerging challenges: increasing wastewater usage in
agriculture is good for livelihood opportunities, but it also
presents significant public health risks.
How does safe water contribute to the
health?
• Healthy drinking water, sanitary sanitation, and efficient water
management are important for global health.
• Rising access to safe drinking water, improving sanitation and
hygiene, and improving water quality could avoid nearly a
tenth of the world's disease burden.
• Safer water could prevent:
▫ 1.4 million child deaths from diarrhea annually
▫ 500,000 deaths from malaria
▫ 860,000 child deaths from malnutrition
▫ 280,000 drowning deaths
• In addition, 5 million people will be shielded from lymphatic
filariasis and another 5 million from trachoma, all of which
can be fatal.
How to purify water?
• Until drinking, it's incredibly important to ensure that
your water has been filtered or handled.
• If your water is polluted and you don't have access to
bottled water, there are a number of water
purification methods available today, each with its
own set of benefits and disadvantages.
• Filtering is useful for simple water tasks like
sediment and chlorine elimination.
Boiling
• The cheapest and easiest form of water
purification is boiling water.
• Water sources and/or distribution
channels can make your water unsafe.
• Parasites and germs, for example, are
things that you can not see through your
naked eyes, but their consequences may be
life-threatening.
• Clean water should be brought to a rolling
boil and left there for 1-3 minutes in this
process.
• It is advised to boil the water longer than
water boiling at lower altitudes for people
living in high-altitude areas.
• This is due to the fact that water boils at
lower temperatures at higher altitudes.
• Until drinking boiling water, it should be
covered and allowed to cool.
• For water drawn from wells, leave it for
compounds to settle befo you filter clean
water for use
Filtration
• Filtration is one of the most powerful methods for purifying water, and
when combined with the right multimedia filters, it can efficiently rid
water of pollutants.
• To purify water and make it safe for human consumption, this system
employs chemical and physical processes.
• With an easy and fast filtration method, filtration removes both large
compounds and small, hazardous pollutants that trigger diseases.
• Filtered water is considered cleaner than water filtered by other methods
because filtration does not eliminate any of the mineral salts.
• It is one of the effective methods of water purification that utilizes the
mechanism of chemical absorption that efficiently extracts unwanted
compounds from water.
Distillation
• Distillation is a form of water
purification that uses heat to extract
pure water as vapor.
• The scientific fact that water has a
lower boiling point than other
pollutants and disease-causing
elements found in water makes this
method successful.
• A heat source is used to heat water
until it reaches its boiling point. Until
it vaporizes, it is then left at the
boiling point.
• To cool, the vapor is guided into a
condenser.
• As vapor cools, it condenses into
liquid water that is clean and safe to
drink.
• Some liquids are left in the container
as sediments that have a higher
boiling point.
Chlorination
• Chlorine is a powerful chemical that has
been used to treat water for use at home
for many years.
• Chlorine is a strong water purifier that
destroys germs, bacteria, and other
disease-causing species in both ground
and tap water.
• Using chlorine tablets or liquid chlorine,
water may be filtered. Chlorine is a cheap
and efficient water purification product
that can be bought off the shelf.
• When using chlorine liquid or tablets to
treat drinking water, however, care should
be taken.
• People with thyroid disorders, for
example, should check with a physician
before using this product.
• It's important to use chlorine tablets in hot
water because they dissolve faster in water
that's at least 21 degrees Celsius.
• Chlorine tablets destroy all bacteria,
leaving clean and healthy water for you.
Health is in a relationship with water
• It's common knowledge that water is important for
good health.
• But why is that? Most of your body weight is made
up of this material and is involved in many important
functions, including: flushing out body waste to
control body temperature and support your brain
function.
• From drinking drinks, you get most of your water, but
food also contributes a small amount to your daily
water intake.
It helps create saliva
• Saliva absorbs a lot of water.
• Saliva also contains electrolytes,
mucus, and enzymes in small
quantities. It's necessary for
breaking down solid foods and
preserving oral health.
• When you drink enough water,
the body produces enough saliva.
• However, as you get older or take
some drugs or therapies, your
saliva production can decrease.
• Consult your doctor if your mouth
is dryer than normal and rising
your water intake isn't improving.
It regulates your body temperature
• To regulate your body temperature,
keeping hydrated is important.
• During physical activity and in hot
environments, your body loses
water through sweat.
• Your sweat keeps your body cool,
but if you fail to replenish the water
you lose, your body temperature
will increase.
• That's because when you're
dehydrated, the body loses
electrolytes and plasma.
• Make sure you drink plenty of
water to prevent dehydration if
you're sweating more than normal.
It protects your tissues, spinal cord, and
joints
• Water keeps the joints, spinal cord, and tissues lubricated and
cushioned.
• This will encourage you to enjoy physical exercise while also
reducing the pain caused by illnesses such as arthritis.
It helps excrete waste through perspiration,
urination, and defecation
• Water is used by the body to sweat,
urinate, and transfer bowel
movements.
• When you're exercising or in warm
weather, sweat influences body
temperature.
• In order to replenish the missing
fluid from sweat, you need water.
• To have safe stools and prevent
constipation, you will need enough
water in your system.
• Your kidneys are also responsible
for removing waste from your body
by urination.
• Adequate water intake assists in the
effective functioning of your
kidneys and the prevention of
kidney stones.
It helps maximize physical performance
• It is fundamental to drink plenty of
water during physical exercise.
• During physical activity, athletes
can sweat up to 6 to 10 percent of
body weight.
• Your strength, power, and
endurance are also influenced by
hydration.
• If you indulge in endurance
exercise or high-intensity sports
like basketball, you can be more
vulnerable to the effects of
dehydration.
• Severe medical problems, such as
lowered blood pressure and
hyperthermia, may be detrimental
consequences of exercising in the
sun without enough water.
• Seizures and even death can be
caused by extreme dehydration.
It helps prevent constipation
• Constipation can be prevented in
a number of ways, not just by
consuming fiber.
• In order for your bowel
movements to contain enough
water, it is also necessary to
maintain your water intake.
• You may be more likely to
develop constipation if you do not
drink ample water, magnesium,
and fiber.
• If you're still constipated, you can
find that your symptoms can be
alleviated by drinking carbonated
water as well as plain water.
It aids in digestion
• Contrary to what some say,
before, during, and after a meal,
scientists agree that drinking
water can help the body break
down the food you consume more
quickly.
• This will help you more quickly
digest food and get the most out
of your meals.
• The body adapts to changes in the
consistency of food and stomach
contents, whether they are more
solid or liquid, according to
studies.
It helps with nutrient absorption
• Water not only helps in the
absorption of food, but it also
helps in the dissolution of
vitamins, minerals, and other
nutrients.
• It then delivers the rest of the
body with these vitamin
components for use.
It helps you lose weight
• In both overweight girls and women, studies have
linked body fat and weight loss with drinking water.
• Drinking more water will only help you lose extra
pounds when you eat and exercise.
It improves blood oxygen circulation
• Water transfers vital nutrients and oxygen in the
body.
• Meeting your daily water requirements will increase
your circulation and help your overall health.
It helps fight off illness
• Water intake can assist in the prevention
of certain medical conditions, according
to reliable sources.
▫ Constipation is one of them.
▫ Exercise-induced asthma and kidney
stones
▫ Hypertension with Urinary Tract
▫ Infection
• Water also assists in the absorption of
vital vitamins, minerals, and nutrients
from food, improving the chances of
staying healthy.
It helps boost energy
• Your metabolism can be activated by drinking water.
• An increase in metabolism has been related to an
increase in energy levels.
• One research showed that in both men and women,
consuming 500 milliliters of water increased the
metabolic rate by 30 percent.
• These results seemed to last for more than an hour.
It aids in cognitive function
• To remain in tip-top cognitive condition, proper
hydration is crucial.
• According to Research, not drinking enough water
will affect your concentration, alertness, and short-
term memory.
It helps improve mood
• Water deficiency may also have a detrimental effect
on your mood.
• Dehydration can cause exhaustion, confusion, and
even anxiety.
It helps keep skin bright
• Adequate intake of water will help keep your skin
hydrated and can promote the development of
collagen.
• Water consumption alone, however, is not enough to
decrease the effects of ageing.
• This phase is also related to your genes and to the
general defense of the sun.
• She is Pakistani Actress,
• She drinks more than 5
littres water per day.
It prevents overall dehydration
• The effect of your body not getting
enough water is dehydration.
• And since water is important for so
many body functions, it can be very
dangerous to dehydrate.
• A number of serious complications can
result in severe dehydration, including:
▫ Inflammation of the brain
▫ Seizures due to kidney failure
• To stop dehydration, make sure you
drink enough water to make up for
what's lost by sweat, urination, and
bowel movements.
How much should you drink?
• It's important to keep track of how much water you drink
per day for optimum health.
• When they're thirsty, most people drink, which helps
control the regular consumption of water.
• The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and
Medicine recommends that most people drink the
following quantities of water (from all drinks and foods)
to fulfill their needs:
▫ For men, 15.5 cups (125 ounces) of water a day is
recommended.
▫ Approximately 11.5 cups (91 ounces) per day for women.
How much should you drink? (Contd..)
• Individuals get about 20% of their daily intake of water from
food.
• The rest is reliant on water and water-based drinks to live.
• So, preferably, men would consume about 100 ounces (3.0
liters) of drinking water, and women would consume about 73
ounces (2.12 liters) of drinking water.
• If you're exercising or living in a hotter area to prevent
dehydration, you will have to increase your water intake.
• Your thirst and the color of your urine are two other markers
of hydration.
• If you're thirsty, it means your body isn't getting enough water.
• Dehydration is indicated by urine that is dark or colored. Urine
that is pale or colorless means that you are adequately
hydrated.
Conclusion
• Water is essential for nearly all of your body's functions.
• Not only can it help you sustain your current state of being by
meeting your recommended daily intake, it can also boost your
overall health.
• Here are some tips for making sure you get enough water:
▫ Wherever you go, take a water bottle with you. You can drink this
way whenever the need hits.
▫ Keep track of your consumption.
▫ Every day, try to take in optimal quantities, at least half your
body weight in ounces.
▫ By midday, you should have eaten half of your recommended
intake.
▫ Around an hour before you intend to sleep, you can still finish.

  • 2. The Water • There is nothing on Earth more important to life than water. • People are having trouble getting the amount and quality of water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing, hand washing, and increasing food. • Amazing progress has been made in making clean drinking water in developed countries available to 2.6 billion people. • That's an improvement over that period from 76 percent of the global population to 91 percent. • But there are still many opportunities through better sanitation and hygiene education to multiply the benefits of clean water.
  • 3. Fast facts: Global water crisis • More than one out of every ten people on the planet, 844 million people, do not have access to healthy drinking water. • Every day, women and girls are estimated to spend 200 million hours hauling water. • In rural Africa, the average woman walks 6 KM every day to carry 40 pounds of water. • Every day, over 800 children under the age of five die from diarrhea caused by polluted water and sanitation. • By 2050, at least one-fourth of the world's population will be living in a country with chronic or recurrent freshwater shortages. • Without access to basic sanitation, 2,3 billion people live.892 million individuals practice open defecation.
  • 4. How can I help end the global water crisis? • As a sponsor of World Vision, you will help bring clean water to families in need. • Over the last three years, we have delivered clean water to more than 12.7 million people. • With your support, our ambitions for the future are much more optimistic, but realistic. ▫ Pray for God to shower his blessings on families who are in dire need of clean water. ▫ Donate: Help in the provision of healthy drinking water for children and families. ▫ In the lake, you can run or walk. May 16, 2020, to offer clean water to children all over the world straight from your own home or community. In the race to bring clean water and the potential for fullness of life to children around the world, you can also make a long-term pledge to join Team World Vision.
  • 5. Water-related Health Risks • According to WHO: ▫ 4 percent of all accidents and 5 percent of health casualties are caused by diarrhea worldwide. It is most often caused by gastrointestinal infections, which annually kill around 2.2 million people worldwide, most of them children under the age of five. The unsafe supply of water, sanitation and hygiene is responsible for 88 percent of the burden. ▫ More than 50 states are now reporting cholera to the WHO. ▫ Cancer and tooth/skeletal damage: millions of people are exposed to unhealthy levels of arsenic and fluoride that naturally occur. ▫ Schistosomiasis affects an estimated 260 million people. ▫ Emerging challenges: increasing wastewater usage in agriculture is good for livelihood opportunities, but it also presents significant public health risks.
  • 6. How does safe water contribute to the health? • Healthy drinking water, sanitary sanitation, and efficient water management are important for global health. • Rising access to safe drinking water, improving sanitation and hygiene, and improving water quality could avoid nearly a tenth of the world's disease burden. • Safer water could prevent: ▫ 1.4 million child deaths from diarrhea annually ▫ 500,000 deaths from malaria ▫ 860,000 child deaths from malnutrition ▫ 280,000 drowning deaths • In addition, 5 million people will be shielded from lymphatic filariasis and another 5 million from trachoma, all of which can be fatal.
  • 7. How to purify water? • Until drinking, it's incredibly important to ensure that your water has been filtered or handled. • If your water is polluted and you don't have access to bottled water, there are a number of water purification methods available today, each with its own set of benefits and disadvantages. • Filtering is useful for simple water tasks like sediment and chlorine elimination.
  • 8. Boiling • The cheapest and easiest form of water purification is boiling water. • Water sources and/or distribution channels can make your water unsafe. • Parasites and germs, for example, are things that you can not see through your naked eyes, but their consequences may be life-threatening. • Clean water should be brought to a rolling boil and left there for 1-3 minutes in this process. • It is advised to boil the water longer than water boiling at lower altitudes for people living in high-altitude areas. • This is due to the fact that water boils at lower temperatures at higher altitudes. • Until drinking boiling water, it should be covered and allowed to cool. • For water drawn from wells, leave it for compounds to settle befo you filter clean water for use
  • 9. Filtration • Filtration is one of the most powerful methods for purifying water, and when combined with the right multimedia filters, it can efficiently rid water of pollutants. • To purify water and make it safe for human consumption, this system employs chemical and physical processes. • With an easy and fast filtration method, filtration removes both large compounds and small, hazardous pollutants that trigger diseases. • Filtered water is considered cleaner than water filtered by other methods because filtration does not eliminate any of the mineral salts. • It is one of the effective methods of water purification that utilizes the mechanism of chemical absorption that efficiently extracts unwanted compounds from water.
  • 10. Distillation • Distillation is a form of water purification that uses heat to extract pure water as vapor. • The scientific fact that water has a lower boiling point than other pollutants and disease-causing elements found in water makes this method successful. • A heat source is used to heat water until it reaches its boiling point. Until it vaporizes, it is then left at the boiling point. • To cool, the vapor is guided into a condenser. • As vapor cools, it condenses into liquid water that is clean and safe to drink. • Some liquids are left in the container as sediments that have a higher boiling point.
  • 11. Chlorination • Chlorine is a powerful chemical that has been used to treat water for use at home for many years. • Chlorine is a strong water purifier that destroys germs, bacteria, and other disease-causing species in both ground and tap water. • Using chlorine tablets or liquid chlorine, water may be filtered. Chlorine is a cheap and efficient water purification product that can be bought off the shelf. • When using chlorine liquid or tablets to treat drinking water, however, care should be taken. • People with thyroid disorders, for example, should check with a physician before using this product. • It's important to use chlorine tablets in hot water because they dissolve faster in water that's at least 21 degrees Celsius. • Chlorine tablets destroy all bacteria, leaving clean and healthy water for you.
