READING AND
WRITING SKILLS
A text is a large unit of written language.
It is anything that conveys a set of meanings to the person
who examines it.
the word “text” refers to a written or typed document. In
terms of a rhetorical situation, however, “text” means any
form of communication that humans create. Whenever
humans engage in any act of communication, a text serves as
the vehicle for communication.
TEXT
Text as a connected
discourse
A text is a connected discourse, which means that
all ideas in the text must be related in the sense
that they would express only one main idea, or that
the text must have unity by combining all ideas to
emphasize central idea.
Basically, a text is a large unit of written
language. It is actually connected
discourse.
In short, discourse is an expression of
ideas. Text is a group ideas put together
to make one central idea.
Fiona is no stranger to poverty.
Fiona passed the highly competitive college admission test of a
respected University.
Studying hard became Fiona's routine, and despite him being
poor, she made sure to maximize the University's resources.
Inspired by her friends, Fiona worked on joining the National
Chemical Engineering Quiz Bowl as a representative of her
University.
EXAMPLE
Be aware that for a writer to be able to
express meaning in writing, he or she must
consider unity and logical arrangement of ideas;
appropriateness of language use; and proper
grammar, punctuation, spelling and format.

Characteristics of a well-
written text.
Refers to the arrangement of ideas in a text.
To follow a good organization of ideas, creating an outline of
ideas before starting is will help.
An outline is like the skeleton of the human body which gives
your writing a form.
Using outline provides a format which ideas can be arranged in
a hierarchy that distinguishes the general ideas from th specific
or subordinating ideas.
ORGANIZATION
Refers to the connection of ideas and connection between sentences and
paragraphs.
In order to assure coherence and cohesion, the use of transitional and
cohesive devices should be use.
For providing cohesion ,old and new information in the text ideas must
be organize.
It can be done using certain vocabulary such as synonyms, and antonym
or repetition of words from the previous sentenc, using pronouns and
conjunctions.
COHERENCE AND
COHESION
APPROPRIATE
LANGUAGE USE
Refers to the acceptable style of language for a
particular form of text. For business
correspondences, for instance, the style must
be concise and formal. For literary pieces, on
the other hand, the language and style may be
less formal and more creative.
PROPER MECHANICS
Refers to the convention of writing which
includes capitalization, punctuation, spelling,
numerals, abbreviation, acronyms, and
contractions.

  • 2. A text is a large unit of written language. It is anything that conveys a set of meanings to the person who examines it. the word “text” refers to a written or typed document. In terms of a rhetorical situation, however, “text” means any form of communication that humans create. Whenever humans engage in any act of communication, a text serves as the vehicle for communication. TEXT
  • 3. Text as a connected discourse A text is a connected discourse, which means that all ideas in the text must be related in the sense that they would express only one main idea, or that the text must have unity by combining all ideas to emphasize central idea.
  • 4. Basically, a text is a large unit of written language. It is actually connected discourse. In short, discourse is an expression of ideas. Text is a group ideas put together to make one central idea.
  • 5. Fiona is no stranger to poverty. Fiona passed the highly competitive college admission test of a respected University. Studying hard became Fiona's routine, and despite him being poor, she made sure to maximize the University's resources. Inspired by her friends, Fiona worked on joining the National Chemical Engineering Quiz Bowl as a representative of her University. EXAMPLE

  • 7. ORGANIZATION COHERENCE AND COHESION APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE USE PROPER MECHANICS Characteristics of a well- written text.
  • 8. Refers to the arrangement of ideas in a text. To follow a good organization of ideas, creating an outline of ideas before starting is will help. An outline is like the skeleton of the human body which gives your writing a form. Using outline provides a format which ideas can be arranged in a hierarchy that distinguishes the general ideas from th specific or subordinating ideas. ORGANIZATION
  • 9. Refers to the connection of ideas and connection between sentences and paragraphs. In order to assure coherence and cohesion, the use of transitional and cohesive devices should be use. For providing cohesion ,old and new information in the text ideas must be organize. It can be done using certain vocabulary such as synonyms, and antonym or repetition of words from the previous sentenc, using pronouns and conjunctions. COHERENCE AND COHESION
  • 10. APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE USE Refers to the acceptable style of language for a particular form of text. For business correspondences, for instance, the style must be concise and formal. For literary pieces, on the other hand, the language and style may be less formal and more creative.
  • 11. PROPER MECHANICS Refers to the convention of writing which includes capitalization, punctuation, spelling, numerals, abbreviation, acronyms, and contractions.
