The healthcare field can be observed from different angles. From my perspective, healthcare is designed much like the human body in the sense that
each and every part works together to support and complement the other. Public Health is a critical part of healthcare because it carries the main
disciplines of our health systems that gives us knowledge on how to address a broad range of issues. From proactive measures such as developing
preventive medicine to analyzing health disparities, I believe this is the driving factor that makes public health more prominent in healthcare today.
I became aware early on that I had a passion for service, caring for others, and more importantly
I knew I wanted to serve in the healthcare field. I asked myself the question, "What kind of health care provider do I want to be?" I considered
several options such as being a primary care physician, a pharmacist or a nurse. However, public health specifically epidemiology, slowly took
precedence over them all.
I conducted my first epidemiologic study at the age of twelve, on six of my family members. My study showed that all six of my aunts had
hypertension, two of them were diabetic and one suffered from lupus. At the time, I assumed these illnesses were uncommon, but as I further analyzed
more members of my family, I saw a common trend of these diseases in both the men and women between the ages of thirty–five to fifty. Certain ethnic
groups and populations consistently faced these chronic illnesses, and that deeply concerned me. I decided to get more inquisitive in my research to
see if there was anything I could do. I found that diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes played a major role in prevention and I challenged my
family to live a healthier and more proactive lifestyle.
As I became older, I decided to look beyond my family and into the community around me. I took a tally of the prominent diseases affecting my
church community and realized that these issues weren't just affecting my family alone. Many other families have dealt with these diseases over many
generations. I researched and educated myself about the etiology and risk factors of diseases such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular

My Interest On Public Health
My interest in public health stems from a lifelong connection to and fascination with our healthcare system, even from the time before I could

The purpose of this paper is to take what we as public health opportunist have learned and harvest over the years and make inform efforts to prevent
obesity across all ages.
As a nation...moreover, as a globe we currently are experiencing an epidemic of obesity that is unprecedented in its magnitude. Overweight and obesity
not only plagues the majority of adults in developed nations, but children are become increasingly overweight, corresponding with a diminished quality
of life and health status. According to the Obesity Society of America, fifty of the fifty–one states had a current average body mass index (BMI) greater
than 20%. ("Obesity Society") While the problem clearly exists, there is little clarity about the relative importance of possible causative factors such
as changes in dietary patterns, increase in portion size, increase in television viewing, increased fast food and soft drink consumption and a decrease
in physical activity are the debatable causes of this growing epidemic. In the absence of fully understanding the cause of the problem, it may be useful
to look at the lessons learned from other public health campaigns to help determine if these lessons learned have any relevance for the prevention of
obesity abroad.
