History Essay 2
Rachel Maloney December 10, 2014 U.S. History Writing Assignment #2 The two historical documents, Narrative of Lavinia Bell written by an
anonymous author in the Montreal Gazette and the Letter to an English Abolitionist by James Henry Hammond, shared their strong opinions on the
important issue of slavery. These documents were written in the 1800's during an era of progressive changes. One can identify similarities and many
differences in their opinions, motives, and goals for their writings. I believe Bell's account was written to show the perspective of slaves' brutal view,
compared to Hammond's letter justifying slavery and the rights of the slaveholders. Lavinia Bell's document was written in 1861 and Hammond's in
1845. Both...show more content...
This world was made for man, and man for the world as it is."(Doc. 2) Both authors use different methods to sway their audience to their position
on slavery. Bell's document provided an emotional appeal with a horrific story. The account's of Bell's punishments are described in gruesome
detail and wouldn't always mention what Bell did to receive the abuse from her master, but mainly focused on what the actual punishments were.
Therefore a method succeeding in making the white master seem evil and a murderer with no remorse and the slave as an innocent victim. The
author also transmits the abolitionist message by using specific words such as "brute" and "brutal" to describe Bell's master William Whirl and
words such as "poor negro" when referring to the slaves. To add to the emotional appeal, the author implies that the slave had integrity and was
loyal to her mistress Polly Whirl when she refused to tell on her for informing her of the safe haven in Canada and how to find it. As a
consequence, Bell is severely tortured and almost beaten to death, yet never betrays Mrs. Whirl. Lastly, the author's choice of words towards the end
of the document evokes a sense of guilt by including the word "we" in the conclusion. "Need we commend this poor woman to the citizens of
Montreal for their practical aid, after the history we have given her?"(Doc. 1) By using the word "woman", this document is also portraying the slave

Revised Question
Compare the effects of racial ideologies on North American societies with those on Latin American/Carribean societies during the period from 1500 to
1830.
Rationale for Revision: The fundamental comparison in this question is the same in both versions, though in the revised question students are asked to
compare only the effects of the ideologies. It is, as a result, a bit narrower in focus than the original. Teachers will need to make the connections
between the ideologies and their effects explicit because they are in different sections of the Curriculum Framework.

Reliable Historical Sources Essay
Reliable Historical Sources History is the study of the past, of what had really happened and who were involved. To study history itself, it is essential
that the source from which the information were taken is factual as well as reliable. It is not acceptable if it contains errors and flaws or mixing the
truth with some fictions. This essay will investigate and evaluate a piece of historical evidence, the Hollywood movie The Patriot starred by Mel
Gibson and Heath Ledger in order to determine whether or not it is reliable and could be used to determine the events that really had happened during
the American fight...show more content...
A secondary source, however, offers an easier interpretation of what was stated in a primary source. An example of a secondary source is an
encyclopedia telling about what happened during the Revolution for Independence in America. The disadvantage is that it is not one hundred percent
reliable. Since The Patriot is a secondary source, it certainly contains bias and therefore makes it quite hard for the audience to be sure of its reliability.
The Patriot was made for the sake of Hollywood and not to share what happened in the American history through a thorough and complete
documentation. Therefore, the script The Patriot itself will certainly reflects on how the scriptwriter think about the events and contains personal
opinions on the subject.
Relating to the point that had just been made, the reliability of a historical source also depend on the bias a source contained. What needs to be
questioned is whether or not this movie is biased? As seen from an audience perspective, The Patriot is a biased movie because once again, it is a
Hollywood movie with American crews and therefore they have their own ideas on how the events had occurred and why they thought they were right
in pursuing independence rather that keeping peace with the Great Britain. If seen from the British perspective, the characters on the British side might
not be that bad, especially Tavington

Historians have learned a great deal about the Crusades from chroniclers like William of Tyre and Ibn al–Qalanisi. Today, reporters and newscasters
travel all over the world to report on international events, including conflicts. Reporters and world leaders use social media outlets like Twitter and
Facebook to connect with the public. Imagine what we might know had there been access to television, cell phones, and social media in the 13th
century.
Time to imagine there was social media during the Crusades! Your assignment is to write posts that certain important figures could have written had

Pros And Cons Of Oral History
Oral history has been a vital source of historical and important information since the beginning of human interaction. Recordings and one on one
interviews with someone who lived through a certain time period or particular event can often provide a substantial amount of information and
evidences on a subject that one may be researching. Unfortunately oral history does has its flaws, and it does not always provide the best source of
information. Often information from direct interviews and other forms of oral history can be misinterpreted and inaccurate. There are quite a few pros
and cons when using oral history as a source of evidence. These pros includes first–hand accounts of a certain event, person, and/or time period, next
access to information not available in books, articles, or journals, and finally oral history allows for different views and opinions on a subject matter
the opportunity to be heard that otherwise wouldn't. There also are several cons when using oral history as a source of evidence. As mention earlier
information from oral history can and has often been misinterpreted and inaccurate. Another con includes biases and ideology differences effecting
personal accounts of an event or person. The final con is the creditability of the actually source. In the Hochschild book and the interview with Stalin's
daughter, these pros and cons are present. Having a first–hand account of a historical event or person can be extremely useful. Someone from a

Morgan Bradley 10/10/14 History Was absolutism a period of prosperity or tyranny in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries? Anyone could
answer based on opinion. Many successful events happened that had helped all the kings become better rulers with strong armies and a strong nation.
There were many deaths that made people call this period of time a time of tyranny instead of prosperity. Many kings were considered obsessed with
themselves or ego centered, but they improved their nations by adding roads. Although, in my opinion this period of time was a time of tyranny simply
because of how the kings ruled the deaths caused by them and the way the government ran. During the 16Ð’17th century all the kings that had ruled,

History Primary Sources
When writing a paper is it essential to have primary sources and allow them to lead the paper. A great primary source is Oral History, but two issues
with using oral history is first collecting accurate history and then interpreting the history. Oral history is when someone records the stories told by
another person about something that they witnessed. "Oral history that reveals a narrator's strong feelings and emotions will engender strong affective
resonances in listeners and thus be retained.." (McHugh, 206). A personal account is powerful; the emotions that carry in the orator voices bring to
home the truth behind the dry official written forms about the events. It also helps prevent "Selective memories of the winners of the battles of

Literature and HIstory Essay
Pulitzer Prize winner, Barbara Tuchman, once said, "[b]ooks are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature is dumb, science
crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill." Just like Barbara has mentioned in her quote, literature always have reflected the historical event that
was happening on the time the books were written. For instance, expansion of Christianity and the belief of immortal life through being a hero on their
own epic, during Anglo–Saxon period is shown on the famous epic; Beowulf. Beowulf himself always summons the lord before his fights and tries to

In the beginning, Celtic Christianity was introduced by monks from Ireland. However, Saint Augustine arrived to England with 40 monks and settled
the religion of Anglo–Saxon's as Roman Christianity. (Stenton 108) This plays a significant role in a lot of literature that has been written in around
7th and 8th centuries. Not only the religions, but also the old Anglo–Saxon immortality played a big role in literature during this time. The belief of
living in an immortal life by having stories about them and be passed down from generation to generation – this was Anglo–Saxon immortality. (James

consist battles and warriors. These stories that were told by scops were usually memorized stories and being exaggerated every time the stories were
being told, and this often encouraged and inspired young warriors to attempt to establish their own heroic journey that can be passed down on.
(Stenton 105) In the epic Beowulf, there are lots of portraits of the God and the Anglo–Saxon immortality. In the story when Beowulf is trying to fight

Reflection On World History
World History seems to be a quite trivial and familiar term to me as it is used as the name of History syllabus in the local curriculum that covers
development of Asia and Europe in the 20th century. However, having read Dr. Martin's article on world history, I found that what was called "World
History" in secondary curriculum may not be world history. World history is not only studying what happened around the world in the past, but also the
training of a mindset to consider and analyse events and information in a big picture without national borders. This mindset is undoubtedly crucial and
essential in the 21st century, when the global integration is happening everywhere and every day. Our activities are no longer limited within the national

The readings provide me a variety of noteworthy and unique points of view that could help me consider if impact of nation states is as important as we
usually think or not. Also, without considering nation states as the major players, world history showed how other factors or individuals affect the
nation states. This can help me to understand the decision–making process of governments, which do not decide what to do, but other factors force the
government to do. Before having read any world history books, it is common for me to consider history that governments are very important in history
as it is how history was taught in the secondary curriculum. As a student who studied in Hong Kong curriculum, I am lucky that history was not taught
in a strongly–biased national approach that the achievements in Chinese modern history are the success of CCP leadership. However, nations are still the
most important players in the history. For instance, it was taught that Sino–Japanese War in 1894–95 was due to the expansion policies of Japanese
governments. However, by reading world history books from the political economy aspect, the reasons for the war are much more complicated if we
study the economic situation and other factors at that

Reflection About History
Knowing and understanding the past helps open doors to the future. As the old saying goes "history repeats itself". And if we didn't study American
History, there would be no hope for the future. Without the knowledge of the past, Americans couldn't prevent the negative things from reoccuring.
Our nation is stronger because superiors recognized the failures in the past and prevented them from occurring in the future. History doesn't just
come from a textbook in school, it is all around us. History is found in museums, books, on the internet, where statues and memorials lie, and just
from stories passed down from one generation to the next. History not only explains who people were, but what they did and why. History
represents America's failures, progression, and success. Through history, we learn how people fixed problems, whether it worked or not, and we can
build off of those solutions to better our future as Americans. Decision makers must use history to make factual judgements in order to succeed. Take
the Vietnam War for example, a war that America didn't win. Although it may be considered a loss, it was a lesson learned. America learned that war
doesn't solve everything, but we do know how to pick and choose our battles now. My grandpa is a Vietnam veteran, he was in the 101st airborne for
the Army. He came home from the war shamed, just as all the other veterans were. At that time people weren't accepting the failure and learning from
it, but the people of

Essay On Prehistory And History
Prehistory literally means "before history". It is derived from the Latin word which means "before" (Prehistory Wikipedia, 2011). This was the era
when there were no written records yet about the existence of the first wave of ancient humans. This was also the time when the periods were divided
into subgroup system which consists of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and the Iron Age.
Prehistory gave rise to the emergence of civilizations. This was also the time when the evolution of the early human beings was influenced by some
inventions such as the writing system. So basically, prehistory is the time when the first set of human beings came into existence along with their
discoveries and inventions.
"History (from Greek бј±ПѓП„ОїПЃОЇО±, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation")[2] is the study of the past, particularly
how it relates to humans and it can also refer to the academic discipline which uses narrative to examine and analyze a sequence of past events"
(History, Wikipedia, 2014). The term history was coined after Aristotle used it in one his studies called the "Inquiries about animals". However this

Prehistory that later became a history provides us with details of how people lived to survive during those early ages when there is no technological

why if we have some confusions about our heritage, we always go back to how it started in the prehistoric era and what were recorded as

The New World Of History Essay
History is an identity of a country, if you want to know about a nation the history is the best way to understand. The importance of history has been
proven many times by writers. A good example would be Pearl Buck who said:" If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday". One
of the most helpful ways to learn history is watching movies. The New World of Terrence Malick focuses on the early history of theUnited States,
which is the arrival of the Europeans. The movie discovers the interaction between the natives and the British settlers when these two societies started
to fight for this divine land. When we look at the plot of the movie, it tells us that the purpose was to present the story in both points of views. In the

For the historians it is important to show how these people fought for their freedom and ancestors and what did they sacrifice for. However, the way
they deliver the story consist from a different perspective. Films have the advantage to use visual and vocal techniques, which means they can deliver
the emotions in a more effective way by taking advantage that audience is able to recognize behaviors and acts of a character. The scenery can be
very different than a reading source, based on the imagination of the reader. Most of the time, movies have more impressive effect on the audience, the
impression is more conscious than it is in a textbook.
"I thought it was a dream... what we knew in the forest. It's the only truth" (John Smith). The history of the United States has varieties of versions
depending on the perspectives. An African proverb says "Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters" therefore,
the historians have a huge role in depicting the history. In the movie "The New World", the history of the United States shown as a fortune that is
discovered by hopes and expectations. The portrayal of the film illuminates the beginning of a new era with the foundation of this divine land that will

Introduction to Public History
Ever since public history emerged on college universities in the 1980s, historians have still had difficulties defining the term. The National Council on
Public History's definition of the term stirred the debate even more. According to the National Council on Public History, "public history describes the
many and diverse ways in which history is put to work in the world" (NCPH 2016). This definition helps the public understand that public history
focuses around real world issues in an applicable way. Public history is performed outside of the traditional research–based college campuses, whether

Now and Then Interview
"Times sure have changed" is a quote that comes to mind when thinking of the different between being an adolescent today compared to being an
adolescent sixty years ago. To find out more about the differences I was able to speak with a male, currently age 82, and a female age 18. I am
familiar with both of these individuals one, a close friend of the family, and my cousin's daughter was able to answer some questions for me also.
These two people both grew up in the United States. The eighty–two year old lived in Kentucky as an adolescent. The eighteen year old currently

What Is Historical Testimony
Introduction Perhaps, in one or the other, we all have experiences that we have gone through and they completely altered our lives. Evidently, we all
have some unforgettable experiences, with some having the best and others have the worst kind of experiences. History is documented through the
narration of testimonies by the victims of the experiences. Over the years, there is a lot that has happened in the world and all the occasions, there
were people who were left to tell the stories. The holocaust is one of the worst events in the world that people had to endure; millions of people were
killed in cold blood but there were survivors who lived to tell the story. Through their testimonies, we all get to know and connect with their

Other testimonies have touch of joy and hope. Depending on the nature of the event the testimony is being narrated, emotion vary as the testimony
continue to be narrated. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, he raised some significant moral and ethical questions when he witnessed traumatic scenes
such as burning alive babies, young boy being hung, people fighting against one another for food, which led to his loss of faith in god and humanity. In
the video testimony of Renee, from around the 22th minute, until the one hour mark, the testimony is characterized by sad emotions but the emotions
changes to joyful in the 1.37 minutes mark, when she talks about the individual who used to help the Jews. "Never shall I forget that night, the first
night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I
forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky", (Wiesel, 1982.pg. 32) that's an
example of sad emotion during a testimony. The testimony intended audience also depends on the nature of the event. In most cases, the target
audience of testimonies are historians who document the events that have shaped the world in different dimensions. Any other individuals

Reflective Essay On American History
Americas history is what defines us and who we are as a country. We were built on hard work, sacrifice, wanting to be free and independent to be who
we want to. Now a–days, we seem to have fallen away from this. Everything is given to us so easily on our computer and through technology that we
have no need to work hard anymore. This is the downfall in humanity because as we keep going, life will continue to get easier and we won't want to do
anything. History is our hope so that we can learn from what we did in our past and how things were done then. For starters, we can see what

our country is headed at this moment. Even for individuals, we can work hard to get where we want in life. This is what it means to find our history

What is History?
The definition of history, is a question which has sparked international debate for centuries between the writers, readers, and the makers of history. In
the words of acclaimed historian Edward Gibbon, "History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind." A
more romantic view on the subject was taken by Cicero. He said, "History is the witness that testifies the passing of time. It illuminates reality, vitalizes
memory, provides guidance of daily life and brings us tidings of antiquity" History, described in the simplest of terms, can be seen as a record of events
that have occurred in the past that the historian has taken the trouble to document. It is the...show more content...
There is of course the argument, that even primary source evidence can be somewhat tainted. Propaganda by rulers and governments has been used a
major tool to promote popularity amongst their people. For example, in Russia at the turn of the century writers who wrote critically about the
internal affairs of government were censured, persecuted and sometimes imprisoned or executed. In 1537 to 1574, The massive censorship exercised
by Cosimo I de' Medici of Florence precipitated a decline in historiography in Florence. The extreme wealth and power of the Medici family
extended even further into the art of the Renaissance period and their depiction was prevalent as saintly figures in the works of these artists. Fear
of persecution could drive an otherwise intelligent scholar to be biased and one sided. Even today bias and prejudice is apparent in the accounting
of daily events in newspapers and television. The events revealed to the public are those which the editor or director chooses to be relevant. The
Daily Telegraph for example, is widely perceived as being supportive of the Tories. In the world of films we never read 'this is a true story' in the

Why Study History?
Why Study History?
Have you ever pondered the importance of history? Do you believe it is worth studying? Our past provides us with many new ideas, perspectives, and
opportunities. It is important to study history because it teaches us essential skills and traits, gives us examples and ideas so that we can improve our
current and future lives, and it guides many more people to have better citizenship.
History isn't usually simple. It contains many events, big and small, people, and ideas. It is critical to study our past because it urges us to learn and
use important traits and skills such as critical thinking and seeing with different perspectives. First, history helps us assess evidence we find more
efficiently and thoroughly. "The study...show more content...
If we didn't learn more about past events and people who went before us, we would be wasting even more time by not learning from those mistakes and
successes and repeating the same things that have already been tried before. George Santayana once said,"Those who cannot learn from history
are doomed to repeat it." Improvement, success, and more improvement. Isn't that what most people are striving for? No one is perfect, and we all
have things to work on, so wouldn't we be unwise to not take advantage of learning from the past? If, from studying history, we learn about a way
of doing something that the people before us already discovered didn't work, what's the point in trying it again if we know it will fail? "If you take
a good look, it may surprise you to learn how many of the objects that surround you every day were originally invented thousands of years ago by
the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans or other societies"(Pruitt, 1). We have already been slightly learning from the past for a while now, and look
how far it has brought us. We would be so far away from so many of the objects and inventions we have today. Think of all the other advancements we
could make if more people started looking to history when they had a question! "History teaches us to move forward, recognize our mistakes and learn
from them, and ultimately create a better existence for all"(Postma).

History Essay 2

  • 1. History Essay 2 Rachel Maloney December 10, 2014 U.S. History Writing Assignment #2 The two historical documents, Narrative of Lavinia Bell written by an anonymous author in the Montreal Gazette and the Letter to an English Abolitionist by James Henry Hammond, shared their strong opinions on the important issue of slavery. These documents were written in the 1800's during an era of progressive changes. One can identify similarities and many differences in their opinions, motives, and goals for their writings. I believe Bell's account was written to show the perspective of slaves' brutal view, compared to Hammond's letter justifying slavery and the rights of the slaveholders. Lavinia Bell's document was written in 1861 and Hammond's in 1845. Both...show more content... This world was made for man, and man for the world as it is."(Doc. 2) Both authors use different methods to sway their audience to their position on slavery. Bell's document provided an emotional appeal with a horrific story. The account's of Bell's punishments are described in gruesome detail and wouldn't always mention what Bell did to receive the abuse from her master, but mainly focused on what the actual punishments were. Therefore a method succeeding in making the white master seem evil and a murderer with no remorse and the slave as an innocent victim. The author also transmits the abolitionist message by using specific words such as "brute" and "brutal" to describe Bell's master William Whirl and words such as "poor negro" when referring to the slaves. To add to the emotional appeal, the author implies that the slave had integrity and was loyal to her mistress Polly Whirl when she refused to tell on her for informing her of the safe haven in Canada and how to find it. As a consequence, Bell is severely tortured and almost beaten to death, yet never betrays Mrs. Whirl. Lastly, the author's choice of words towards the end of the document evokes a sense of guilt by including the word "we" in the conclusion. "Need we commend this poor woman to the citizens of Montreal for their practical aid, after the history we have given her?"(Doc. 1) By using the word "woman", this document is also portraying the slave as a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 4. Reliable Historical Sources Essay Reliable Historical Sources History is the study of the past, of what had really happened and who were involved. To study history itself, it is essential that the source from which the information were taken is factual as well as reliable. It is not acceptable if it contains errors and flaws or mixing the truth with some fictions. This essay will investigate and evaluate a piece of historical evidence, the Hollywood movie The Patriot starred by Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger in order to determine whether or not it is reliable and could be used to determine the events that really had happened during the American fight...show more content... A secondary source, however, offers an easier interpretation of what was stated in a primary source. An example of a secondary source is an encyclopedia telling about what happened during the Revolution for Independence in America. The disadvantage is that it is not one hundred percent reliable. Since The Patriot is a secondary source, it certainly contains bias and therefore makes it quite hard for the audience to be sure of its reliability. The Patriot was made for the sake of Hollywood and not to share what happened in the American history through a thorough and complete documentation. Therefore, the script The Patriot itself will certainly reflects on how the scriptwriter think about the events and contains personal opinions on the subject. Relating to the point that had just been made, the reliability of a historical source also depend on the bias a source contained. What needs to be questioned is whether or not this movie is biased? As seen from an audience perspective, The Patriot is a biased movie because once again, it is a Hollywood movie with American crews and therefore they have their own ideas on how the events had occurred and why they thought they were right in pursuing independence rather that keeping peace with the Great Britain. If seen from the British perspective, the characters on the British side might not be that bad, especially Tavington Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 7. Pros And Cons Of Oral History Oral history has been a vital source of historical and important information since the beginning of human interaction. Recordings and one on one interviews with someone who lived through a certain time period or particular event can often provide a substantial amount of information and evidences on a subject that one may be researching. Unfortunately oral history does has its flaws, and it does not always provide the best source of information. Often information from direct interviews and other forms of oral history can be misinterpreted and inaccurate. There are quite a few pros and cons when using oral history as a source of evidence. These pros includes first–hand accounts of a certain event, person, and/or time period, next access to information not available in books, articles, or journals, and finally oral history allows for different views and opinions on a subject matter the opportunity to be heard that otherwise wouldn't. There also are several cons when using oral history as a source of evidence. As mention earlier information from oral history can and has often been misinterpreted and inaccurate. Another con includes biases and ideology differences effecting personal accounts of an event or person. The final con is the creditability of the actually source. In the Hochschild book and the interview with Stalin's daughter, these pros and cons are present. Having a first–hand account of a historical event or person can be extremely useful. Many successful events happened that had helped all the kings become better rulers with strong armies and a strong nation. There were many deaths that made people call this period of time a time of tyranny instead of prosperity. Many kings were considered obsessed with themselves or ego centered, but they improved their nations by adding roads. • 9. History Primary Sources When writing a paper is it essential to have primary sources and allow them to lead the paper. A great primary source is Oral History, but two issues with using oral history is first collecting accurate history and then interpreting the history. Oral history is when someone records the stories told by another person about something that they witnessed. "Oral history that reveals a narrator's strong feelings and emotions will engender strong affective resonances in listeners and thus be retained.." (McHugh, 206). • 10. Literature and HIstory Essay Pulitzer Prize winner, Barbara Tuchman, once said, "[b]ooks are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature is dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill." Just like Barbara has mentioned in her quote, literature always have reflected the historical event that was happening on the time the books were written. For instance, expansion of Christianity and the belief of immortal life through being a hero on their own epic, during Anglo–Saxon period is shown on the famous epic; Beowulf. Beowulf himself always summons the lord before his fights and tries to fight Grendel for his own heroic journey. Inhuman behavior of British toward Irish farmers are reflected in Jonathan Swift's satire,...show more content... In the beginning, Celtic Christianity was introduced by monks from Ireland. However, Saint Augustine arrived to England with 40 monks and settled the religion of Anglo–Saxon's as Roman Christianity. (Stenton 108) This plays a significant role in a lot of literature that has been written in around 7th and 8th centuries. Not only the religions, but also the old Anglo–Saxon immortality played a big role in literature during this time. The belief of living in an immortal life by having stories about them and be passed down from generation to generation – this was Anglo–Saxon immortality. (James 2) The stories were told by bards – called scops sang around the campfires while they played harp, telling the story of heroic deeds which usually consist battles and warriors. These stories that were told by scops were usually memorized stories and being exaggerated every time the stories were being told, and this often encouraged and inspired young warriors to attempt to establish their own heroic journey that can be passed down on. (Stenton 105) In the epic Beowulf, there are lots of portraits of the God and the Anglo–Saxon immortality. In the story when Beowulf is trying to fight Grendel firstly to pursuit fame and live on immortal life by his stories being told throughout the history. • 11. Reflection On World History World History seems to be a quite trivial and familiar term to me as it is used as the name of History syllabus in the local curriculum that covers development of Asia and Europe in the 20th century. However, having read Dr. Martin's article on world history, I found that what was called "World History" in secondary curriculum may not be world history. World history is not only studying what happened around the world in the past, but also the training of a mindset to consider and analyse events and information in a big picture without national borders. This mindset is undoubtedly crucial and essential in the 21st century, when the global integration is happening everywhere and every day. Our activities are no longer limited within the national ...show more content... The readings provide me a variety of noteworthy and unique points of view that could help me consider if impact of nation states is as important as we usually think or not. Also, without considering nation states as the major players, world history showed how other factors or individuals affect the nation states. This can help me to understand the decision–making process of governments, which do not decide what to do, but other factors force the government to do. Before having read any world history books, it is common for me to consider history that governments are very important in history as it is how history was taught in the secondary curriculum. As a student who studied in Hong Kong curriculum, I am lucky that history was not taught in a strongly–biased national approach that the achievements in Chinese modern history are the success of CCP leadership. However, nations are still the most important players in the history. For instance, it was taught that Sino–Japanese War in 1894–95 was due to the expansion policies of Japanese governments. However, by reading world history books from the political economy aspect, the reasons for the war are much more complicated if we study the economic situation and other factors at that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Reflection About History Knowing and understanding the past helps open doors to the future. As the old saying goes "history repeats itself". And if we didn't study American History, there would be no hope for the future. Without the knowledge of the past, Americans couldn't prevent the negative things from reoccuring. Our nation is stronger because superiors recognized the failures in the past and prevented them from occurring in the future. History doesn't just come from a textbook in school, it is all around us. History is found in museums, books, on the internet, where statues and memorials lie, and just from stories passed down from one generation to the next. History not only explains who people were, but what they did and why. History represents America's failures, progression, and success. Through history, we learn how people fixed problems, whether it worked or not, and we can build off of those solutions to better our future as Americans. Decision makers must use history to make factual judgements in order to succeed. Take the Vietnam War for example, a war that America didn't win. Although it may be considered a loss, it was a lesson learned. America learned that war doesn't solve everything, but we do know how to pick and choose our battles now. My grandpa is a Vietnam veteran, he was in the 101st airborne for the Army. He came home from the war shamed, just as all the other veterans were. At that time people weren't accepting the failure and learning from it, but the people of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Essay On Prehistory And History Prehistory literally means "before history". It is derived from the Latin word which means "before" (Prehistory Wikipedia, 2011). This was the era when there were no written records yet about the existence of the first wave of ancient humans. This was also the time when the periods were divided into subgroup system which consists of the Stone Age, Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Prehistory gave rise to the emergence of civilizations. This was also the time when the evolution of the early human beings was influenced by some inventions such as the writing system. So basically, prehistory is the time when the first set of human beings came into existence along with their discoveries and inventions. "History (from Greek бј±ПѓП„ОїПЃОЇО±, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation")[2] is the study of the past, particularly how it relates to humans and it can also refer to the academic discipline which uses narrative to examine and analyze a sequence of past events" (History, Wikipedia, 2014). Prehistory that later became a history provides us with details of how people lived to survive during those early ages when there is no technological developments yet. So these historical events and information serve as an inspiration and foundation for us to keep growing and improving as long as we preserve the ancient tradition and culture. Both the prehistory and history has been an instrument on how our cultural heritage was shaped. • 16. Then and Now Essay Now and Then Interview "Times sure have changed" is a quote that comes to mind when thinking of the different between being an adolescent today compared to being an adolescent sixty years ago. To find out more about the differences I was able to speak with a male, currently age 82, and a female age 18. I am familiar with both of these individuals one, a close friend of the family, and my cousin's daughter was able to answer some questions for me also. These two people both grew up in the United States. The eighty–two year old lived in Kentucky as an adolescent. The eighteen year old currently resides in Arkansas. Times have changed and I learned a little about just how much in speaking with my willing participants. These two...show more content... He worked because it was what he had to do. Working from such a young age in his home doing mandatory chores, and additionally having to work outside the home to help his father gave him a strong work ethic. Even though he is retired, this gentleman still lives alone, owns three vehicles, which he does all basic maintenance himself. Reading from the text book on page 419, the author makes it seem that working at a young age can harm an adolescent. This goes against my personal beliefs and what I found in doing these interviews, going to school and working helped both of my interview subjects, and from my own personal experience, it gave even me a better sense of responsibility and expectation for becoming an adult. From questions about school and job situations I moved into asking these individuals about the relationships they have or had with their parents. Neither subject spoke of conflicts with their parents. They both shared that their parents trust them to make correct decisions. The elderly man shared that his community was small, so his parents would warn that if he did something wrong it would get back to them. He claimed that he and his siblings knew to "just be a good citizen," and if they did something wrong not only would their parents find out, but neighbors would correct them verbally if they were found to do something inappropriate, "it was a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In the video testimony of Renee, from around the 22th minute, until the one hour mark, the testimony is characterized by sad emotions but the emotions changes to joyful in the 1.37 minutes mark, when she talks about the individual who used to help the Jews. "Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky", (Wiesel, 1982.pg. 32) that's an example of sad emotion during a testimony. • 18. Reflective Essay On American History Americas history is what defines us and who we are as a country. We were built on hard work, sacrifice, wanting to be free and independent to be who we want to. Now a–days, we seem to have fallen away from this. Everything is given to us so easily on our computer and through technology that we have no need to work hard anymore. This is the downfall in humanity because as we keep going, life will continue to get easier and we won't want to do anything. History is our hope so that we can learn from what we did in our past and how things were done then. For starters, we can see what mistakes we did and make sure we don't do them again. If we continue to the same thing over and over again, there's no way for our society to improve from this. Our...show more content... Everyone worked hard for what they had, and that's where we get the phrase American–made. People appreciated this because they knew someone had spent a lot of time and effort into making this. If people had this attitude today and the willingness to put in the work to get what they wanted, our nation as a whole would be much more successful. If our nation hadn't come from this, I doubt we would have near as much pride to be American. This is why we should look at the past to get our hope. If we take to heart what we see, we can change the outcome of where our country is headed at this moment. Even for individuals, we can work hard to get where we want in life. This is what it means to find our history in the past. If we can start a country like this back then, think about what we could do now in this mind–set! • 19. What is History? Essay What is History? The definition of history, is a question which has sparked international debate for centuries between the writers, readers, and the makers of history. In the words of acclaimed historian Edward Gibbon, "History is indeed little more than the register of the crimes, follies and misfortunes of mankind." A more romantic view on the subject was taken by Cicero. He said, "History is the witness that testifies the passing of time. It illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance of daily life and brings us tidings of antiquity" History, described in the simplest of terms, can be seen as a record of events that have occurred in the past that the historian has taken the trouble to document. It is the...show more content... There is of course the argument, that even primary source evidence can be somewhat tainted. Propaganda by rulers and governments has been used a major tool to promote popularity amongst their people. For example, in Russia at the turn of the century writers who wrote critically about the internal affairs of government were censured, persecuted and sometimes imprisoned or executed. In 1537 to 1574, The massive censorship exercised by Cosimo I de' Medici of Florence precipitated a decline in historiography in Florence. The extreme wealth and power of the Medici family extended even further into the art of the Renaissance period and their depiction was prevalent as saintly figures in the works of these artists. Fear of persecution could drive an otherwise intelligent scholar to be biased and one sided. Even today bias and prejudice is apparent in the accounting of daily events in newspapers and television. The events revealed to the public are those which the editor or director chooses to be relevant. The Daily Telegraph for example, is widely perceived as being supportive of the Tories. In the world of films we never read 'this is a true story' in the credits but that it is 'based on a true story'. Our past provides us with many new ideas, perspectives, and opportunities. It is important to study history because it teaches us essential skills and traits, gives us examples and ideas so that we can improve our current and future lives, and it guides many more people to have better citizenship. History isn't usually simple. It contains many events, big and small, people, and ideas. It is critical to study our past because it urges us to learn and use important traits and skills such as critical thinking and seeing with different perspectives. If we didn't learn more about past events and people who went before us, we would be wasting even more time by not learning from those mistakes and successes and repeating the same things that have already been tried before. George Santayana once said,"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Improvement, success, and more improvement. Isn't that what most people are striving for? No one is perfect, and we all have things to work on, so wouldn't we be unwise to not take advantage of learning from the past? If, from studying history, we learn about a way of doing something that the people before us already discovered didn't work, what's the point in trying it again if we know it will fail? "If you take a good look, it may surprise you to learn how many of the objects that surround you every day were originally invented thousands of years ago by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans or other societies"(Pruitt, 1). We have already been slightly learning from the past for a while now, and look how far it has brought us. We would be so far away from so many of the objects and inventions we have today. Think of all the other advancements we could make if more people started looking to history when they had a question! "History teaches us to move forward, recognize our mistakes and learn from them, and ultimately create a better existence for all"(Postma). Get more content on HelpWriting.net
