Unit 13 – LO1 Planning and Pitching a Print Based Media Product
Q3 evaluation
1. Q3. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSITITUTION MIGHT HEIDI
NOCKELS
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AN WHY?
2. VOLCANO PUBLISHING
Volcano publishing company is responsible for producing
alternative music magazine Artrocker. Publishing in only a
small independent company allows it to produce a more
personal, thought out product, as apposed to a large co -operate
industry company in which factories out several major, global
magazines. Based in London, Volcano publishing is only a two
year old company. It is still yet to produce such magazines on a
larger scale to appeal to the millions. However, alternative
music magazine Artrocker prides itself on appealing to a more
intimate social group of the minority of the alternative music
listeners. In such a way that a huge industry would be incapable
of. The publishing company itself does not own a website.
Reflecting its independence away from such cooperation's.
Volcano Publishing is an option to produce
Alternative music magazine Revolution.

3. BAUER MEDIA GROUP PUBLISHING
Bauer media group, founded in 1875 has served in international
areas, including Europe, USA , China and Russia. The huge
cooperate industry has published both Q and Kerrang; two of
the largest known music magazines out. Its huge range of
magazines from music to T V guides makes each less personal
and a simple way to add to the multi billion euro company. To
add a simple alternative music magazine to the industry can
help expand a minuet selection of readers to the millions
ranging from all over the world. But the contents itself will
loose such independence and the relevance to the personal
genre. However, the larger publishing companies are capable of
creating a magazine in which will go global and can feature
the most exclusive interviews with the more known
Artists rather than the more local artists a smaller
Magazine would be able to get.

4. REVOLUTIONS CHOICE OF PUBLISHING
COMPANY
Alternative music magazine Revolution has chosen to go with
the Bauer media group publishing. This multi billion euro
company has the ability to create a huge well known brand
magazine for the genre, something in which is lacking in the
market today. Although a smaller publishing company would
follow the typical alternative genre of being a more independent
magazine, the genre is missing a well known, household name.
By going with a larger publishing company allows the smaller,
less known artists to become more widespread and appreciated
for their music throughout the industry although in the minority
genre. Any product is created in order to make money/ add to
an already built company. Revolution will be able to bring in
money from its vast amount of new readers but still allowing
themselves to be independent and to feature the more
unknown, quirky artists instead of the commercial chart music.

7. REASON FOR REVOLUTIONS
ADVERTISEMENT CHOICES
The choices of brands and albums Revolution has chosen to use to adver tise
within their magazine all were specifically picked for their relation to the music
industr y and genre. In ever y music magazine there will be adver tisements for
the newest and most popular albums and singles. Revolution has chosen to
include the following ar tists; Lana Del Rey, The Vaccines, The XX and Alt -J. All
of which are classified under the alternative genre in order to appeal to
Revolutions specific target audience. Revolutions choice of ‘other’
adver tisements include areas of alcohol, clothing, music store, festivals and
ticket provider s. All these sections of media are what the target audience of
late teens to early twenties are interested in and are the up to date brands of
today. The choice of Leeds festival was specifically chosen in order to relate to
the front cover of the mentioning of the competition in order to win Leeds
Festival tickets. This adver tisement then encourages reader s to enter. Both
Ticketmaster and ITunes are ways in which to access music, either for an Ipod
or for live concer t tickets. Topshop clothing store is one of the most popular
stores for the teenage generation at the moment, it also suppor ts the idea of
the alternative style of clothing. Finally, Absolut Vodka is relating to the idea of
aiming to the more older ages of which are within drinking ages. The brand is a
sophisticated, modern brand, reflecting the alternative genre per fectly.
8. ONLINE PRESENCE
As Revolution is part of such a large publishing company like
the Bauer media group, it is expected for them to have an
online presence for there thousands of readers. I believe it
would be appropriate for Revolution to have their own website.
The site will be able to post tour dates and ticket providers for
alternative artists, video interviews with their favourite
musicians, the top 40 genre appropriate songs of the week plus
more. Websites provide a more modern take on the traditional
magazine; it allows the readers to constantly be able to access
Revolutions updates. Having a website online also allows a
larger section of the public to become aware of the brand that
is Revolution. The magazine is then able to venture into
dif ferent areas online e.g. a YouTube channel, facebook page
and twitter account. Revolution is then free to become a part of
everyday readers life, informing them of all their music needs.
9. APPS
Apps, much like an online presence allow Revolution magazine
to be part of any readers everyday life. I believe that with
mobile apps, Revolution will have a singular one which will be
the same as the online website. This will then help any reader
when finding the website, to be able to access the online
features. Revolution magazine have specifically chosen not to
create an app, dif ferent from the website in order to not clutter
a magazine which prides itself on being simple and dif ferent
than other commercial magazines already out. However,
Revolution magazine will also feature within the ‘Newsstand’ of
any smart phone, so that readers will be able to pay for their
weekly magazine on the go without having to carry round the
product itself around. It is the new, modern way of being able to
read whilst mobile.
