Semiotics
- Semiotics is the study of signs and their meaning in society.
- A sign is something which can stand for something else – in other words,
a sign is anything is anything that can convey meaning.
- Meanings can be constructed with symbols, writing and technical
elements.
- Signifier – the sign: A word, colour of image (i.e the colour blue)
- The signified – the concept/ meaning/ association that the sign refers to
i.e BLUE is often associated with sadness or the sea etc.)
Symbolic sign
The symbolic signs of business arethe suit, tie and white shirt.
The symbolic signs of Goths is the dark hair, heavy makeup, dark clothing.
Intertextuality
- It’s the process of creating references to any kind of media text via
another media text.
- Intertextuality essential means for a type of media (film, television,
music etc.) to pay homage to another media text.
- For example the 2006 film ‘she’s a man’ and the 1998 romancefilm
‘Shakespearein Love’.
