Evaluation - question 2
1. Evaluation - Question 2
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
2. From the research that I carried out especially task 3
when I looked into an artist's brand package I saw that
there was a lot synergy so that all of the aspects of an
artist's advertisement are linked together. Usually with an
editing style like ours with the black and white or with a
similar font.
U2 have used similar synergy to how I want my own to
look with the alternative rock genre bringing about a lot of
shots and pictures with a similar mood and feel to them. A
lot of the pictures are dark and moody which is one of the
reasons that we thought it would be a good idea to edit
the shots to make them black and white. However we did
film in colour so that we could turn them back into colour
in case that black and white didn’t work.
You can see that all of the images
are quite similar and that you
could piece them together even if
you didn’t know that they were
from the same band.
3. The images to the right are ones from U2 adverts
and music videos and on the right are ones that I
made myself. I tried to replicate what I saw in the
research section with big blocky and plain text similar
bands like REM used them as well as U2 also the
images are both dark and gloomy which fits the
context of the song. The text used the same one that
I searched for on the internet and from ones that
were saved on Photoshop and then found the font
and thought it was great straight away because it is
very plain, simple and easy to read. Depending on
the colour of the background will depend on which
colour is used so that it is most easily seen. I tried to
create my own synergy using similar images in terms
of looks and then the settings often change so there
is always something different about them.
4. These shots are all in our music video in some form with some appearing
more than others. There is a contrast between the two different types of
shots we tried to get some of them in the studio during the performance
parts of our video. On the other hand there is also the shots that are taken
in more scenic locations which are also in the digipak and the magazine
ad. The only shots in the music video that aren’t in black and white are
those that are following the narrative which is a love story. This again fits
in well with the lyrics, because from the research we thought that it would
go in well with the rest of the video and the synergy of the whole package.
The photos from the digipak show how the
pictures then went through the editing stage,
the black and white effect is added and then
text is added to make it look like a real
digipak. The the two different shots one a long
shot with a huge amount in the backdrop and
the other with the track list on has less going
however is much more detailed.
To help show continuity again a
website link promoting Band Aid which
is something Bono is heavily linked with
has been added to make it feel more
authentic.
