1. EVALUATION – QUESTION 5
HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE?
We developedthe ideaof ‘BinaryOpposites’throughmetaphoricrepresentationsthroughoutthe
film.Flashbacksmade the sequence mentallyenlargedinthe sense thatitwasgivendepththrough
the ideaof a longrunningbackstory. Thisallowedustomake the worldof whichwe were filmingin
biggerto allowthe audience tofeel more immersedwithinthe story. The linearnarrative makesthe
filmeasytounderstandandwatch as there isno confusionthroughtime –however,we diduse
flashbacksof whichwere clearlyseparatedfromthe currenttime shotsof whichtherefore made the
openingmore engaging.Consideringnarrative hooks –a majorone wassetupon mycharacter
concerninghismotivesforwhathe isdoing,thisputsthe audience inapositionof doubtand
contemplationastheyare lefttofigure outexactlywhatmotivatedhim.We couldhave usedcross
cutting/parallel editingthroughoutinordertomake itseemas if more eventswere happeningatthe
same time, therefore givingthe sequenceadditional ‘edge’,butinsteadwe sloweditdownand
focusedmainlyonthe interrogation –makingthe scene more intimate withthe audience.
The openingscene initiallysetsthe moodof the filmtobe suspenseful andgloomy, withthis, fear
accompaniesthe interrogationsequence inthe sense thatthe audiencefearsforthe character
playedbyJoe.Aswell asthis,the sequence overall comesacrossas‘toocomplete’inthe sense that
all the eventshappentooeasilyandthere doesn’tseemlike anythingcanhappenafter the fact –
eventhroughthe final sequence withConnorscharacter.Thistherefore givesthe audience a
momenttoconsiderif everythingisgoingtogo as plannedorif there isgoingto be a majorplot
twist/narrative hookof whichwill make the restof the filmfarmore engaging.
As mentionedinpreviousblogpostsevaluatingthe film, the mise-en-scene metaphoricallybrings
attentiontothe character’s personalities - makingthemmore intriguing.Withthe charactersbeing
portrayedas andbeingplayedas people the same age asour target demographic, itiseasytosay
that thisisa majorelementof engagementdue tothe relatability.Aswell asthis, the charactersare
a small groupin societyof whichmetaphoricallyrepresentproblemsinthe real world, thismaynot
exactlybe an elementof production, butitallowsmore audiencestoenjoyandengage withourfilm
as theycan alsorelate to the biggerpicture.Regardingintertextual references, oursare verysubtle,
yetthe audience coulddrawsimilarity tothe otherfilms/showsthathave inspiredourproduct to
accumulate more theoriesof whatwill happen.Anexample of thisisthe general gangideafrom
‘West Side Story’ of whichwouldattractan olderaudience, yetgive lightandattentiontothe
ongoingissue insocietyof unforcedviolence due todisagreement.
The cameraworkwas a good wayto buildupsuspense andtensiontoengage the audience. We
mainlyinthissequence usescloseupshots(examplesbeingjoesface andthe ECU of hiseyes) to
draw full attentiontothe emotionof the character.Aswell asthis,we usedcertainlevelledshots
such as midshotsto put the audience onthe same level asJoescharacter, the same goesfor
Connorscharacter as theyare the ‘Protagonists’inthe film. However, bydisplayingmycharacter
throughlowangle shotsgiveshimdominance overnotonlythe othercharactersinthe film, butthe
audience too,we see thisduringthe punchat the endof the interrogationof whichisextremely
engaginginthe sense thatthe audience feelsinferiorandendangeredbythe antagonisingfigure.
Editingwasalsoa keycomponentinmakingthe filmmore engagingforthe audience.Withoutpace
inediting,we couldn’thave builtupexcitementandintensity –an example of thisiswhere we used
a montage inthe flashbackof whichexploredthe mindof Joescharacter, whichaddedtothe
elementof fear, makingthe shotmore engaging.Inthe sequence whereConnorscharacterisonthe
phone tomy character, the trackingshots/unstable cameraworkaddstothe intensityalso, whichis
2. goodas the interrogationsequence andphone conversationare twodifferentaspects –therefore,
we had to try to maintainthe levelof interestandengagement. The score isn’tahuge factor of
intensitybutitdoesaddto the overall moodof the film, regardingthatitiswhite noise soitcouldn’t
have had toomuch effectonthe actual storyyetit didbringanotherelementof eeriness.
The audience,asmentionedpreviously,ispositionedinthe shoesof JoescharacterandConnors
character, dominatedbythe characterplayed byme.Withthis, the audience cansupportthe
protagonist/sandfeel howtheyare feelinginthispowerlesssituation.Aswell asthis,hatredcanbe
builtuptowardsmy character of whichinstantly establishes himasthe antagonist. This,asI have
brieflymentionedbefore, allowsthe audience toeasily understand the filmandbe more engaged
withitdue to this.Furthermore, withthe audience beingplacedinthe shoesof the protagonist/s,
theycan interoperate forthemselveswhatwill happennext, especiallyinthissequence where they
are lackingthe powertheyneed.
