LEARNING
OBJECTIVE
In the end of this lesson, student should be able to:
1. Explain with examples the application of factors
that affect the rate of reaction in daily life.
3. 3
• Solid food in big chunks such as big chunks of potato have a
smaller total surface area will be cooked at lower speed when
exposed to heat during cooking.
• For the food to be cooked faster, the big chunks of solid food
must be cut into smaller pieces such as potato chips to
increase its total surface area exposed to heat.
4. 4
• Buildings near the industrial areas will corrode fast due
to acid rain.
• The atmosphere around industrial areas contains a high
concentration of sulphur dioxide and increase the rate
of corrosion.
Corrosion due to acid rain
5. 5
In a pressure cooker, the high pressure raises the boiling
point of water to temperature above 100oC.
The higher temperature increases the rate of cooking.
So, the food can be cooked faster.
Cooking food
Washing clothes using detergent powder and hot water
combines two factors that increase the rate of reaction.
The process of washing clothes will even fast in this
situation
Cleaning

Factors Effect on the rate of
reaction
Effect on the yield of
ammonia
Conditions chosen
Catalyst The use of catalyst
increases the rate of
production of ammonia
The quantity of
ammonia(yield)
produced remains the
same with or without
the catalyst
Iron is used as a
catalyst to increase the
rate of production of
ammonia
