PLASTIC AS A BUILDING MATERIAL
(FLOOR AND WALL FINISHES)
PRESENTED BY :HACHIN GAUTAM
ARCHITECTURE STUDENT 2ND YEAR
INTRODUCTION
• MANY TYPES OF PLASTIC WALL COVERINGS ARE AVAILABLE
NOW AND THEY ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR.
• SOME ARE MORE DECORATIVE THAN OTHER AND SOME AFFORD
SOUND INSULATION.
• BUT ALL, OWNING TO THEIR ABRASION RESISTANCE, ARE MORE
HARDWEARING AND EASILY CLEANED THAN OTHER WALL
COVERINGS.
• AS THEY ARE NONPOROUS, THERE IS A GREATER GREATER
TENDENCY FOR THE GROWTH OF MOULDS SO THE ADHESIVES
SHOULD CONTAIN FUNGICIDES.
PLASTIC
• PLASTICS ARE MADE FROM NATURAL MATERIALS SUCH AS
CELLULOSE, COAL, NATURAL GAS, SALT AND CRUDE OIL
THROUGH A POLYMERIZATION OR POLYCONDENSATION
PROCESS.
• PLASTICS ARE DERIVED FROM NATURAL, ORGANIC
MATERIALS SUCH AS CELLULOSE, COAL, NATURAL GAS,
SALT AND, OF COURSE, CRUDE OIL.
PLASTICS ARE OFTEN USED IN
• TOYES
• SIDE SHIELDS,
• BOTTLES,
• CD AND CASSETTE BOXES,
• DISPLAYS,
• ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS,
• ELECTRONIC ENCLOSURES,
APPLICATIONS
• INSTRUMENT PANELS,
• OUTDOOR SIGNS,
• PIPES,
• SEAT BACKS,
• SECURITY SHIELDS,
• SHUTTERS,
• WINDOW FRAMES,
• WINDOWS AND WINDSHIELDS ETC..
• POLYPROPYLENE (PP),
• POLYSTYRENE (PS),
• HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE (HIPS),
• ACRYLONITRILE BUTADIENE STYRENE (ABS),
• POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE (PET),
• POLYESTER (PES),
• POLYAMIDES (PA) (NYLONS),
• POLY(VINYL CHLORIDE) (PVC),
• POLYURETHANE (PU),
• POLYCARBONATE (PC),
• POLYETHYLENE (PE)
TYPES OF PLASTICS:
PLASTIC MATERIALS INCLUDE
• THE USE OF PLASTICS MATERIALS IN BUILDINGS, BOTH FOR INDUSTRY WHAT IT IS
TODAY.
• CONSTRUCTION AND DECORATION, CONTINUES TO INCREASE, PARTICULARLY AS
ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS AND BUILDERS APPRECIATE THEIR ADVANTAGES IN
CONSTRUCTION TERMS.
• IN THE PROVISION OF THEIR ADVANTAGES IN CONSTRUCTION TERMS AND IN THE
PROVISION OF SO CALLED ‘MAINTENANCE FREE’ STRUCTURES.
• TODAY, PLASTICS MATERIALS ARE SO WIDELY USED IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY
THAT IT MATERIALS ARE SO WIDELY USED IN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY THAT IT
WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO ENVISAGE THE CONSTRUCTION OF ANY BUILDING
WITHOUT THEM.
• MANY PRODUCTS ARE AVAILABLE WHICH MEET THE VARIOUS BUILDING AND FIRE
REGULATIONS.

Advantages of plastic wall covering.
Plastic is also extremely durable.
It comes in a number of different textures and colors and is both weather and fire
resistant.
It can be an effective insulation option for your home.
Plastic cladding should not be used on the exterior of your walls but can be used on
the inside
• As the name “wall finishes” itself suggests that it is
finish given to the wall to enhance the interior or
exterior look of the structure.
• Wall finishes used for the interiors are quite delicate
and need maintenance.
• Interior finish consists mainly of the coverings of the
rough walls, ceilings, and floors, and installing doors
and windows with trim and hardware.
• Wall finishes provide a decorative skin to conceal
building components including structural members,
insulation, ductwork, pipes, and wires.
• Good wall finishes are plumb and straight. Surfaces
may be smooth or textured and better wall finishes
are durable.
• Some wall finishes are versatile, taking decorative
finishes such as stain, paint or wallpaper readily.
WALL FINISHES
PLASTICS USED IN WALL FINISHING ARE:-
PAINTS
WALLPAPER
PVC PANNEL
PAINTS
PAINTS OFFER A WIDE CHOICE OF COLOUR, EFFECTS AND
DEGREE OF GLOSS. PAINTS USED ON WALLS ARE USUALLY
USED FOR DECORATION RATHER THEN PROTECTION. PANTS
CAN BE EASILY APPLIED AND CLEANED TOO.
PAINTS
COMPOSITION OF PAINT- IT OF A MIXTURE OF 4
INGREDIENTS
PIGMENTS
ADDITIVES
BINDERS
SOLVENTS
WALLPAPER
THIS TYPE OF WALL COVERING EVOLVED AS AN INEXPENSIVE
SUBSTITUTE FOR TAPESTRIES OF THE WEALTHY. THE CHOICE
OF WALLPAPERS HAVE A WARMER APPEARANCE THAN PAINT.
SMOOTH FINISHES DON NOT CATCH DUST, BUT EASILY SHOW
UP MARKS.
COMPOSITION OF WALLPAPER
WALLPAPER CONSISTS OF A BACKING, GROUND COAT, APPLIED INK, AND SOMETIMES PASTE ON
THE BACKING USED TO ADHERE THE PAPER TO THE WALL. NON-WOVEN BACKINGS CAN BE OF
GROUND WOOD, WOOD PULP, OR WOOD PULP WITH SYNTHETIC MATERIAL. WOVEN BACKINGS ARE
THOSE MADE OF STURDY WOVEN TEXTILES SUCH AS DRILL (HEAVY WOVEN COTTON MUCH LIKE
JEAN MATERIAL). THE WOVEN BACKING IS THEN COATED AND PRINTED..
PVC WALL PANELS AND ITS TYPES
PVC means Polyvinyl Chloride. It is a kind of plastic which is very popular these
days. It is very budget friendly and easy to install. It looks very good so it is taking
the place of traditional building material such as wood, clay etc.
BENEFITS OF PVC PANELS
PVC panels are easy to install, good looking, waterproof, stain proof, termite
proof, moisture proof, budget friendly, low in maintenance, safe and recyclable.
Above that installation of PVC panels is an extremely easy job as compared to
tiles or even paint etc.
1. PVC Foam Board
TYPES
• PVC Foam Board is prepared by PVC
foaming and pressing with additives.
• These are available in thickness ranging
from 1mm to 20mm.
• We generally use 4 mm or more
thickness for paneling a wall.
• The size of PVC foam boards varies from
1.22m to 2.05m width and 2.44m and
3.05m length.
• These are available in varied bright color
shades like white, black, yellow, red,
green, blue, etc.
2. PVC Sheets
TYPES
• These are PVC sheets, sandwiched
between the longitudinal grid of PVC
within them.
• This grid provides the sheet strength and
makes the sheet lightweight, therefore
also known as light weight panels.
• The most commonly available PVC wall
panels size of 8mm thick in India is 10-
inch wide and 10 feet long.
ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC WALL COVERING
PLASTIC IS ALSO EXTREMELY DURABLE.
IT COMES IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT TEXTURES AND
COLORS AND IS BOTH WEATHER AND FIRE RESISTANT.
IT CAN BE AN EFFECTIVE INSULATION OPTION FOR YOUR
HOME.
PLASTIC CLADDING SHOULD NOT BE USED ON THE
EXTERIOR OF YOUR WALLS BUT CAN BE USED ON THE
INSIDE
VARNISH
• Varnish is a clear transparent hard protective
finish or film.
• It is neither a paint nor stain.
• In its native state it has little or no colour, but
may be pigmented as desired.
FLOOR FINISH
A FINISH FLOOR OR FLOOR COVERING IS THE ULTIMATE TOP
LAYER OF ALL OF THE FLOORING LAYERS.
A FINISH FLOOR OR FLOOR COVERING IS THE LAYER THAT YOU
WALK ON AND IT IS THE DECORATIVE LAYER.
PVC Flooring
• PVC are becoming more and
more popular and so the offer has
grown in recent years.
• Since it combines many
positive properties:
• PVC Flooring are practical,
water-and stain-resistant,
versatile, easy to care, good
price-performance ratio and
provides good durability for the
cost for, therefore ideal for all
living spaces, commercial areas
and even industrial sites.
PVC Floorings TYPES
Heterogeneous PVC Floors: It has a multi-layer structure, generally it is formed
by laminating 4 to 5 layers of the structure.
Generally, it has a wear-resistant layer (including UV treatment), printing layer,
glass fiber layer, and elastic foam layer, base layer, etc.
This type of PVC can be combined with other flooring materials and is used in
housing, commercial and industrial spaces.
Wood Polymer Composite Flooring (WPC)
• WPC is a Polymer Core that is lighter in
weight. It includes air pockets in the core
which can create indentations in the
product from furniture and heavy objects.
• It doesn't require acclimation before
installing and is not recommended for
direct sunlight or sunrooms.
PVC Floorings TYPES(structure)
PVC Floorings TYPES( Structure)
Stone Polymer Composite Flooring (SPC)
• SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite, a
limestone core combined with PVC dust and a
stabilizer.
• It's denser due to the core being 60-70% limestone
with a 30% PVC core fused together.
• Often referred to as rigid core, SPC is 10X more
impact resistant than WPC.
• It's also more stable to sunlight, can be installed in
sunrooms, and has better scratch resistance
compared to WPC.
• The elastic SPC core is finished with a decorative
and protective UV film to create a beautiful and
strong flooring.
PVC Floorings TYPES(structure)
Homogeneous Vinyl Floor or
Semi-homogeneous PVC Floors:
It is homogeneous from top to
bottom, that is, from the surface to
the bottom, from the top to the
bottom, the same color.
Homogeneous PVC floors come as
an economical solution because of
their long-term life and therefore they
are good in high-traffic and industrial
areas such as hospitals, schools,
libraries, supermarkets, warehouses
and so on.
PVC Floorings TYPES( Shapes & Sizes)
• Sheet Vinyl (PVC) Flooring:
• Sheet vinyl floors are like smaller planks, still big
enough to cover smaller floor areas at once.
• With their usual length somewhere between 6 and 12
feet (1000mm-2000mm), sheet vinyl floors are ideal for
bathrooms or smaller kitchens.
• They are available in a wide range.
• Vinyl (PVC) Planks:
• Vinyl planks are an excellent choice for people
who want the appearance and durability of
hardwood flooring at a fraction of the cost.
• Planks are large, square or one-piece vinyl rolls.
• The specifications of the Vinyl (PVC) Planks
floors: 4"×36" (101.6mm × 914.4mm), 6"×36"
(152.4mm × 914.4mm), 8"× 36" (203.2mm ×
914.4mm), thickness: 1.2mm- 3.0mm.
PVC Floorings TYPES(Design)
Inlaid Vinyl Flooring:
The original color granules are naturally arranged.
The adaptability of the overall concept allows you to
use inserted vinyl in almost any environment.
However, what many homeowners dislike is that it
looks exactly the way it should look: vinyl.
Nevertheless, you should consider inlaid vinyl for
kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor areas.
Printed Vinyl Flooring:
It is, in fact, simple vinyl where human intervention is
clear, namely adding prints that make it more
suitable for decorating your home.
Many homeowners prefer printed vinyl to loaded
vinyl because it can be printed in a way that looks
like marble, hardwood, or other types of expensive
flooring.
PVC Floorings TYPES( Shapes & Sizes)
• Vinyl (PVC) Tiles:
• According to some interior designers, vinyl tiles
are not exactly "noble".
• However, there are a variety of practical reasons
for considering them.
• Above all, vinyl tiles can be easily removed or
replaced without having to adjust the entire floor
covering.
• In addition, vinyl tiles can look elegant, for
example, if you want your floor to resemble an
upscale marble floor.
• The specifications of the square vinyl tiles are:
12"×12" (304.8mm × 304.8mm), 18"×18"
(457.2mm × 457.2mm), 24"×24" (609.6mm ×
609.6mm), thickness: 1.2mm-3.0 mm.
