This was presented at the Honolulu Board of Realtors General Member's Meeting on June 20, 2014. Our goal was to educate the audience on how they can continue to work and be productive, even when they are out of the office. From comparing different mobile devices to introducing various mobile applications, you can see how being out of the office does not mean being unable to be productive.

With you reply, hackers are hoping you will respond with account information or by taking you to a website or download that will infiltrate your computer. With social media and public information, it’s easy for people to personalize their attacks. For example, how many of you have Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail accounts? If you got an email from stanleylau808@gmail.com, would you think twice about the email and it coming from me? Some companies use public web services as their email service. Some companies have website with their staff directories. A simple scheme would be to create a generic email account as someone’s supervisor. Send them an email asking them for information or asking them to review a report in the attachment. Other tactics will include people impersonating IT staff or bank customer service calling you or emailing you asking for your login information. Example of PayPal account – Paul got PayPal email, clicked link and tried entering username and password

When you receive an email, ask yourself some very basic questions. Should I be receiving emails from this service? For example, I receive Citibank messages at my work email address. I have a Citibank account but not tied in anyway to my business. Check the From: address. Some phishers are very careless and send as Carlos966@gmail.com. Valid messages should come from valid email addresses with the companies domains. Just because the From address shows a valid looking email address the email address may not be real at all. Spoofing is a common and very easy technique to display a particular From address to make you think the message is coming from someone. Read the content, does the notice make sense? Don’t click on links, check their target web addresses by hovering over the link. Browsers and email clients will display the target address. The best solution is to avoid clicking any links and type in the main website address instead. Even copying and pasting into a web browser is better than clicking directly.
