Toxic masculinity and rape
culture - the pyramid
Individual as cog in the wheel (contributor):
● Laughing at sexist jokes, by laughing plus forwarding the same joke,
actively sending jokes which are sexist (applies to all genders)
● Participating or Being silent when boys gang is objectifying and
degrading women
● Enabling sexist jokes to be circulated in family /friends whatsapp
groups
● Attitude that if a woman/girl is your friend for some time, then may be
there is a 'chance' for love (sex) with her (friendzone concept)
● Perverted content shared in whatsapp groups is consumed without
protest or with great excitement
● Consuming porn and getting ideas or wrong ideas about sex and what
is sexy
● Never knowing about the term CONSENT
● By watching and re watching films which are sexist - graphic rape
scenes for mass consumption
● Gossiping about girls who are in a relationship with other people (this is
irrespective of genders)
● Spreading false and so called juicy info regarding girls or boys
● Enabling or endorsing violence, extra marital relationships, based on
patriarchal logic
● Shushing child sexual molestation - because the perpetrator is 'related'
and is supposed to be a 'good person' (deciding to not believe the
child)
● Not questioning marital rape or thinking marital rape if legitimate right
● Defending (defensively defend) having girl children and keep trying for
boys
● Judge and be vocal about displeasure faced whenever coming in
contact with 'non patriarchal elements, people or notions' in the society
- Banje, vidhave, single parent, un married, pregnant without partner,
● Imagining 'affairs' whenever a woman/girl speaks with a man/boy
● Do you shun the behaviour of people based on patriarchal gendered
morality?
● Being active participant to propagate rape culture and advocate for
killing of rapists (boys will be boys...) on the contrary, marrying the
rapist is looked at as an option too!!
Family:
● Basis for inclusion or exclusion of other people? can a Dalit come to
your kitchen?
● Stigmatising and tabooising sex and sex education
● Not creating financial dependence and vulnerability - Property rights -
are you making your daughter/daughter in law financially secure?
Education? employment choices, Who can you marry? who decides?
● Not creating autonomous individuals who have agency
● Treating girls and boys differently. Having patriarchal double standards
about what is allowed and not allowed
● Asking for virginity test, blood test etc for girl during matchmaking for
arrange marriage. Deciding someone's eligibility based on photograph
itself for both bride and groom.
● Decisions about child in a marriage. Female foeticide, female
Infanticide issues.
● Buying brides - expectation of dowry, buying them from parents by
giving them cash
● Woman in a family needs to be controlled by her husband or elder or
younger men in family.
● Once married a woman belongs to another family, she forfeits her right
to paternal family.
● Whatever a woman earns is not hers
● Women cannot ask boys or men in family where they went and what
they did.
● Women does not have control about income of the family and she
doesn’t have a say when it comes to expenditure and investments of
the family.
● Nurturing and caring for children, elderly and the sick can never be
done by men.
● Traditional roles
Harassment, threats and verbal abuse:
● Dowry related, 'moral character' related, suspicion related, perceived
deficiency related (Banje, only girl children are born, is dark, is from
village, is disabled and so on)
● Threats of shaming them in front of the society, blackmail, threat of
violence,
● Usage of derogatory language and cuss words to intimidate leading to

● Complete darkness regarding - men/boys going through all kinds of
abuse - emotional, physical, sexual...
