2. What is Line in terms of Public Administration
Line authority is that relationship in which a
superior exercises direct supervision over a
subordinate
In simple words there is a line of authority flow from
superior to subordinate
Thus it is an authority relationship in direct line or
steps
3. Line Agency
An administrative system is divided into agencies or
departments principally on the basis of major
purposes The agencies are thus concerned with the
execution or fulfilment of the primary objectives of
govt and deal directly with the people

Health
Defence
Education
Community development
Commerce and industry
Railways and transport

To fulfil the chief objectives of govt
Supplying services to people
Implementing programmes sanctioned by legislature

6. Auxiliary Agency
Auxiliary agencies are those agencies which supports
the line agency to fulfil their root objective they
provide them with supplies they need to meet their
end
7. Examples Of Auxiliary Agencies
There are many auxiliary agencies which perform
various tasks some of them are listed in next slide

Central public works department-looks after
construction works of all departments
Directorate general of supply and disposal – Looks
after the processing of machinery and equipment for
the govt before purchasing for various govt
departments

In a way Staff agencies are basically extensions of the
chief executive to be more clear we can take the
example of chief minister and cabinet
