FIRST
CONDITIONAL
1ST CONDITIONAL
Talk about a possible future.
We use the first
conditional to talk
about a situation and
result in the future.
IF THEN
If it is hot tomorrow, I’ll go to the beach.
I’ll go to the beach if it is hot tomorrow.
In a conditional sentence, there are two clauses:
IF clause and RESULT clause
If it is hot tomorrow, I’ll go to the beach.
Which tense is used in
the result clause?
IF
CLAUSE
RESULT
CLAUSE
Which tense is used
in the if clause?
SIMPLE
PRESENT
SIMPLE
FUTURE
RESULT OF THE
CONDITION
MAKE FIRST CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
1. If she doesn’t get a taxi quickly...
2. If I get 90% in my exam...
3. If it rains tomorrow, ...
4. If my parents come to dinner tonight, ...
5. If you aren’t polite, ...
6. If they don’t study harder, ...
a. ...you won’t have many friends.
b. ...she will not arrive in time at the airport.
c. ...they won’t pass the exam.
d. ...I will feel very happy
e. ...we won’t have a picnic.
f. ...I will cook lasagna.
FUTURE POSSIBILITIES
You can use other forms of the future in the result clause.
In a first conditional statement,
we always use the simple present
If we arrive early, we will have dinner together.
If you don’t listen to me, you won’t know how to complete the task.
However, you can use other forms
of the future in the result clause
If it snows tomorrow, we will go skiing.
If there are a lot of people at the restaurant, we might eat na another café.
If he gets good grades in science, could study medicine at a university.
Remember the first
conditional expresses a
future possibility!!
BUT...
If we are certain something will happen
we use WILL in the result clause.
If we are less certain, use MAY, MIGHT
or COULD in the result clause
STRUCTURE!
IF CLAUSE
If + subject + simple present
RESULT CLAUSE
subject + will/may/could + base form of the verb
If we take public transportation, we’ll save money.
WHICH ACTION MAY CAUSE THE OTHER ACTION?
WILL THESE THINGS DEFINITELY HAPPEN?
If air pollution gets worse, more people may get sick.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF AIR POLLUTION GETS WORSE?
WILL THIS DEFINITELY HAPPEN?
