APPRECIATIVE
Used when enjoying and savoring
pleasurable sounds
Ex: nature
music
compliments
comedy
DISCRIMINATIVE
Used to single out one particular
sound from a noisy environment
Ex: cell phone, traffic, airports,
parties, stadiums
EMPATHETIC
Encourages people to talk freely
without fear of embarrassment.
Ex: with friends, counselor,
psychiatrist, therapy, A.A.
CRITICAL
Used to evaluate and analyze a
message for logic and value
Ex: court, school, with a salesman, $,
law, interviews, politics,
RATE GAP
We speak at 120-180 wpm
We hear and process much quicker
ACTIVE LISTENING
Listener plays an active role by
guiding the speaker toward common
interests.
Ex: you meet someone new and
interesting; you’re a stalker and
you’ve tapped a phone.
PASSIVE LISTENER
Lazy listening
