Listening 
 “Listening” is a process of receiving, integrating and 
reacting to the message received from 
communication sender.” 
 Effective listening is an art of communication, which 
is often taken for granted and ignored. 
 Listening is the most of important skill. How well we 
listen has a major impact on our job effectiveness. 
And on quality of our relationships with other.
 We listen to obtain information. 
 We listen to understand. 
 We listen to enjoyment. 
 We listen to learn.
TYPES OF LISTENING 
 Appreciative listening 
 Empathetic listening 
 Comprehensive listening 
 Critical listening 
 Relationship listening 
 Informative listening 
 With care and criticism listening 
 Discriminative listening 
 Sympathetic listening 
 Therapeutic listening
Appreciative listening 
 This listening for deriving aesthetic pleasure,as we do 
when listen to a comedian,musician, or entertainer 
 In appreciative listening, we 
seek certian information 
which will appreciate, for 
example 
we are use this listening 
when we are listening to 
good music.
EMPATHETIC LISTENING 
 When we listen to a disterssed 
friend who want to said his 
feeling, we provide emotional and 
moral support in the form of 
Empathetic listening. 
 When we listening 
empathetically, we use to seek a 
tuuer understand how others are 
feeling. 
 When psychiatrists listen to their 
patients,their listening is 
classified as empathetic 
liestening.
COMPREHENSIVE LISTENING 
 Comprehensive listening is also known as content 
listening, informative listening, and full listening. 
 This type of listening is needed in the classroom 
when students have to listen to the lecturer to 
understand and comprehend the message. 
 In communication, some words are more important 
and some less so, and comprehension often benefits 
form extraction of key facts and items form a long 
spiel
 Similarly, when 
someone is giving you 
directions to find the 
location of a place, 
comprehension listening 
is required to receive 
and interpret the 
message.
CRITICAL LISTENING 
 Critical listening is listening in order to evalute and 
judge, forming opinion about what is being said. 
 Judgment includes assessing strengths and 
weaknesses, agreement and approval. 
 When the purpose is to accept or reject the message 
or to evaluate it critically. 
 For example listening sales person making a 
purchase or listening to politicians making their 
election campaign speech involves critical listening.
 Similarly, when you read a book with the objective of 
writting a book review, you use your critical abilities. 
 This is the type of listening that we may adopt when 
faced with an offer or sales pitch that requires a 
decision from us.
RELATIONSHIP LISTENING 
 The purpose of relationship listening is either to help an 
individual or to improve the relationship among people . 
 Therapeutic listening is special type of relationship 
listening . 
 Therapeutic listening brings to mind those situation 
where counsellor ,medical personals or other can also be 
used when you listen to friends or acquaintance and 
allow them to get things of that chest.
INFORMATIVE LISTENING 
 Informative listening we give to the situation where 
the listeners primary concern is to understand the 
message . 
 Informative listening or listening to understand is 
found in all areas of our life. 
 For example we listen to lecturers or instruction from 
teachers and what we learn depends on how we 
listen to them.
WITH CARE AND CRITICISM 
lISTENING 
 The ability to listen critically is essential in 
democracy. 
 On the job in community, at service club, in place of 
worksheet critical listening is unimportant .
SYMPATHETIC LISTENING 
 In sympathetic listening we care about the other 
person and show this concern in the way we pay 
close attention and express our sorrow for their 
events and happiness at that joys.
THERAPEUTIC LISTENING 
 In therapeutic listening, the listeners has purpose of 
not only empathising with the speaker but also to 
used these deep connection in order to help speaker 
understand , change or development in some ways.
