Respiratory Diseases
Some of the most common infectious
diseases in the Philippines are ones that
target the respiratory system. Millions of
Filipinos are affected each year and leads to
loss of life.

4. The Respiratory System
- It is the system in charge of
gas exchange by taking in
oxygen and removing carbon
dioxide from the body.

5. How Does Respiratory System Works
- Air enters through the nostrils, leads to the
esophagus​, then, the trachea or windpipe,
the bronchi​, and then enters the lungs​.
- The lungs are full of small sacs known as
alveoli​, and this is where gas exchange
occurs. Respiratory diseases affect any of
these organs. Some affect multiple
respiratory organs at once

13. Myths and Misconceptions on Respiratory Diseases
Smoking is OK in small amounts
There is no acceptable amount of smoking. Even
having one cigarette stick a day can have many
negative health effects, and some of these can severely
affect the respiratory system. Smoking should be
avoided as much as possible.
All Respiratory Diseases are the same
As you have learned in this lesson, many of
the symptoms of respiratory diseases are the
same. However, the parts they affect and the
pathogens that cause them are distinct. This
means that the ways of treating these
diseases are also different.
Colds and Cough are Okay to ignore
In most cases, cases of colds and coughs can
resolve themselves. However, these can also
be symptoms for other respiratory diseases. If
these symptoms of colds and coughs do not
resolve after an extended period of time,
consult a doctor.
