Peatland Restoration Program (BRG) spearheaded by the
Indonesian government to restore 2.4 millions hectares by 2020
Loss of livelihoods (rubber, agriculture)
Negative health impacts (lung failure, malnutrition, respiratory
illnesses)

Peruvian Amazon
⁃13 million HA of flooded forest & peatlands
1/10 of Peru; 3x the size of the Netherlands
⁃Yearly flood cycle during which river levels rise
and fall an average of over 12 meters
⁃Diversity of environments exposed to flooding of
varying intensities and frequencies, riverbank
erosion and deposition due to lateral migration
⁃Bosquesinos produce and conserve
agrobiodiversity and other forms of biological
diversity

-5.2 million HA of “aguaje” – mauritia flexuosa. – that are
among the most productive ecosystems on earth.
-Culturally and biologically significant aguaje fruit: everyday
consumption and important nutritional value for humans
and animals
-Unsustainable extractive activities threaten aguaje fruit
- Aguaje fruit is harvested by cutting down the entire tree
- Reduction of the reproductive capacity of the species and
erosion of its genetic pool
- Severe environmental damage to the affected floodplain and
water ecosystems

10. Aguaje’s role in
mitigation
-Peat in the area contains around 3.14
Pg C in an area of 35,600 square
kilometer
-Different peat formations occur
beneath “aguajales”, “varillal” (“pole”
forests) and almost entirely herbaceous
‘open’ communities
-Vegetation types and the amount of
associated below-ground carbon have
the potential to guide regional land-use
planning and rural development actions

-Bosquesinos do not separate conservation from production as
do conventional development and conservation programs
-Bosquesinos, as part of a long tradition of making their
livelihoods in a rich but highly risky environment, have
mastered adaptation and profit while enhancing the
conservation of floodplain and peatland biodiversity
