Restore 1 million hectares to improve the livelihoods, food security and resilience of 500,000 households Project info Timeframe: 2017-2023 first phase Funding: EU first phase and discussions for a second phase Partners: Incorporating trees into croplands, communal lands and pastoral areas with complimentary sustainable land management practices, value chains and policy 607,088 households and 954,440 hectares reaches • 65% households adopting and over 300,000 hectares where new regreening practices are being applied within 4 years Achievements:
  • 27. Focus area: Monitoring impact • Citizen science data collection • The Regreening App - over 200,000 farmers registered by January 2023– data available on a dashboard to unify and bring together data from different sources • Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) to monitor land health at high accuracy • Household surveys at baseline and endline and uptake surveys for socio-economic indicators • Joint Reflective and Learning Missions (JRLMs) to bring together knowledge for iterative management • Many ecological and livelihood impacts take time, monitoring over longer periods in restoration sites is needed but often absent • Involving the community to track change and inform their future decisions is often missing • Enhancing the Regreening App to share information back with the community through advisory services so that monitoring and access to information are combined
  • 28. Insights from the ground What kind of enabling factors would you like to see more of in the global restoration ecosystem? What capacities are needed to accelerate the global restoration movement? • Matching practices to current and future local contexts • Working through local structures and processes • Addressing drivers and incentives for restoration (policy and enterprises) • Integrating science and evidence to magnify impact (evidence integration) • Strengthening partnerships and inclusion • Technical capacities in restoration approaches and practices by context • Monitoring capacities at multiple levels • Policy advocacy and engagement • Value chain and enterprise development • Iterative and adaptive management and evidence integration knowledge • Combining multiple methodologies to access land degradation and better plan restoration interventions • Gender transformative approaches • Youth integration
  • 29. Insights from the ground cont. What is the next milestone for your restoration initiative? What is your call-to-action to the restoration ecosystem? Building on the lessons learned to develop a phase 2 of the Regreening Africa program, linkages to the Great Green Wall and scaling of the initiative. • Large scale restoration is possible with strong partnerships and by matching practices and approaches to local contexts. • Bringing science, evidence and monitoring to the global and local restoration agenda accelerates impact on the ground. • Value chains with equitable economic benefits and policies that support an enabling environment are critical incentives.

  • 34. Focus area: Capacity strengthening ● We have enhanced independence and efficiency in active mangrove restoration within our scope of operation. ● Resource limitation and duplication of roles within the area scope of operation. ● Limited capacity in mangrove species diversification at nursery phase. ● Research to incorporate additional mangrove species at the nursery phase. ● Innovative resource mobilization campaign. ● Enabling investments for bankable projects.
  • 35. Focus area: Monitoring impact Successfully embraced GIS technologies and forest monitoring methodologies to track growth performance and survival rates of planted mangroves. Lack of a centralized database, duplication of roles, limited resources and defined methodologies of monitoring impacts. Research opportunities on developing and designing centralized databases, use of standard guidelines developed to monitor mangrove restoration impact.
  • 36. Insights from the ground What kind of enabling factors would you like to see more of in the global restoration ecosystem? What capacities are needed to accelerate the global restoration movement? ● Bankable projects that inspire active restoration of the degraded ocean ecosystems such as the mangroves. ● Business training, genuine innovative hubs and hackathons to enhance resilient nature based solutions within the mangrove space.
  • 37. Insights from the ground cont. What is the next milestone for your restoration initiative? What is your call-to-action to the restoration ecosystem? ● Emphasis on the significance of enabling investments as a means to foster bankable projects with reference to the opportunities from the blue economy. ● Technical, professional, and financial support to the marginalized coastal community groups as an avenue to restore degraded coastal ecosystems.
