2. Record labels
Record labels are recognised as brand association with the marketing of music videos and recordings. Which, suits the means
of publicising artists and songs, determines the production, manufacture and distribution of music, induces copyright policies to
content, constructs scouting schemes for the development for potential artists and maintains contracts with artists and their
managing figures.
Via the means of advertisement and content
publishing. Artist success is most profitable under
the management of Def Jam records, in which Def
Jam records has succeeded one-hundred-and-
fifty-two music singles that have been recognised
in music charts. Furthermore, forty-eight artists
under the management of Def Jam records have
been recognised in music charts; whereby Def
Jam records has accumulated one-thousand-nine-
hundred-and-twenty-five weeks of their artists
appearing in music charts (all figures are a
representative of 1989 to the present day).
Our artist would be affiliated with an major record
label to suit the means of becoming publicised,
being that major record labels have more
resources and have developed an audience.
Meaning, that it is more likely for such an artist
within the Hip Hop genre to succeed. In which,
such publicity can be achieved with budgets that
major record labels operate with. Whereby, can
induce various means of advertisement and high
quality productions to attract audience attention
to such an artist. Def Jam Records would be a
recommended record label that is currently
existing, being that such company would
successfully publicise an artist.
Our artist, what record label type is suited?
3. History of Def Jam records
Def Jam records was founded by Rick Rubin, 1983, within New Yorkās University. Def Jam records featured its first release by a
punk-rock group known as Hose. Amongst Def Jam recordings first releases featured I Need a Beat - LL Cool J and Rock Hard -
Beastie Boys in the year 1984. Which, from their releases success, arrived a lead distribution deal with CBS records through the
means of Columbia records. Forming the subsidiary OBS records, the first artist that was signed was known as Oran āJuiceā
jones. 1986, Def Jam signed its one and only thrash metal group, known as Slayer. 1992, Def Jam records intervened with
financial difficulties and determined to be folding, despite their release successes of EPMD and Public Enemy. Moreover,
PolyGram obtained Sonyās 50% ownership of Def Jam recordings, which led Def Jam recordings to fold. 1996, PolyGram
obtained an additional 10% ownership of Def Jam recordings, finally granting full ownership for a sum of one-hundred-million
dollars from Russell Simmons. Many years later, Universal Music Group merged fourteen record labels including Def Jam
records, founding The Island Def Jam Music Group. 2014, UMG made a notice that The Island Def Jam Music Group would not
continue with itās activity; all labels were separated into different groupings: Def Jam recordings, Island records and Motown
records.
4. Copyright applied to record labels
Copyright is a law which provides producers of content, ownership of the content that is produced by them. In which, such
ownership consists of permissions to reproduce the content, produce and distribute copies of content, distribute and exhibit
content to a public audience and produce content of a similar type. However, certain permissions are required to reutilise
content(s) if exhibited on a public medium; whereby if contents are no longer existing within the public domain, users of such
contents are subject to legal action (regarding the users had no permissions).
In terms of record labels, artists and record labels undergo legal actions in the form of an agreement known as a recording
contract, between the record label and itās recording artist(s). Which, such contract suits the means of allowing a record label
to promote and sell content produced by its affiliated artists. As affiliated artists, their content is exclusive to its contracted
record label. However, in scenarios of combining artists to produce music records, a form of consent or notice is required
which suits the terms of all equated record labels. Which terms may discuss finances. Additionally, record labels implement
copyright protection via purchasing the rights to promote and publish such content. Whereby, public figures require the
permissions to use such content.
.
5. Copyright in consideration of music
In consideration of copyright, to use copyright protected music I propose to obtain permissions from the record label that
operates with the artist of my chosen music track, via enquiring through email protocol. In terms of the restrictions that would
apply to my music video production, I would have to oblige by the Fair Use act. Which, requires the content to be utilized
within educational, critical and commentary purposes. Meaning, copyright protected content would not be eligible for
publishment to suit the means of financial gain or publicity, and hence my production would not fulfill this purpose either.
Knowledge of copyright and record labels applied to my own production
Knowledge that I have obtained from copyright protection and records labels has enabled me to determine that content I
produce and use to brand the label will be unique, avoiding copyright claims. In addition, I should obtain permissions to use
such music tracks via making contact with the artists record label of management; proposing to utilize the music for
educational purposes. In which, the institution logo should be implemented into various media texts, such as a magazine
poster, digipak and music video production; and should be created in a similar style to existing record label logos, so that it
can be recognised as a record label and that the productions can be identified also.
6. History of Urban Vibe Records
Urban Vibe Records is a British founded Hip Hop record label, formed in
2016. Which, Urban Vibe Records formed to be a major label in result of
Def Jam recordings financial inconveniences, causing the company to
fold. Whereby, the newly made record label Urban Vibe Records
obtained full ownership within a six-month period; for a total sum of two-
hundred-million pounds sterling. In later moments, Urban Vibe Records
took legal actions in alternating the record labels name to the currently
known Urban Vibe Records; to suit the means of re-branding a previously
corrupt record label.. The record label is recently subject to signing
