- Thank you for your invitation. I’m going to present to you the business case for using machine translation as opposed to standard human translation. Firstly, let’s look at the language services market.
- As you can see, the global market for language services has seen strong growth in recent years, even throughout the recession and financial crisis. It is now estimated at around $40 billion and this growth trend is only expected to continue or even strengthen to beyond 15% p.a.
- The speed of globalisation and the rise of international IT applications (phone, tablet apps, software etc.) and social media in particular is driving this increase in demand. The volume of work is constantly increasing; yet some of the content is short-lived. In fact, the high volumes mean that in some language combinations there are simply not enough professional translators to cope. How will the industry deal with this never-ending increase in demand?
- One option is to use technology to cope with the rapid rise in demand. That means machine translation and post-editing, though not at the expense of human translation.
