The Story of
Our Problem
The CDC recommends 1 hour per day for young kids. That means elementary
school students without access to extracurricular sports leagues enjoy only
58% of recommended physical activities during the week.

Problem Statement
The problem is that young elementary school students engage in less than the CDC’s recommended
1 hour of programmed physical activity per day, coming home in the afternoon or night to
neighborhoods where engaging in outdoor activities alone is unsafe.
This is a problem for children because without safe and supervised after-school play spaces,
children form unhealthy habits that then lead to health problems.

How We Impact
the Problem
California benchmarks for 1st-3rd graders
Physical benefits Students must...
demonstrate an awareness of personal space, general space and
boundaries
-change speed in response to tempos, rhythms and signals
-demonstrate the difference between slow and fast
-land on both feet after taking off on one foot and on both feet
-create or initiate movement in response to rhythms and music
-participate in physical activities that are both enjoyable and
challenging
-participate in a variety of group settings (partners, small groups,
large groups, without interfering with others)
-demonstrate respect for self, others and equipment
-engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity
-demonstrate proper form for stretching
-hold for an increasing period of time basic stretches
-sustain continuous movement for increasing periods of time,
increasing breathing and heart rate
-perform forward lunges, traditional push up
-work in pairs or small groUps to achieve an agreed-upon goal

Through 20 minute active
stories, students make up for
the physical activity they are not
getting in a formal school
setting. We give to children what
many public schools are unable
to provide them with.
