1. The main characters in โCarrieโ opening sequence
The opening sequence features a close up of Carrie herself, this immediately
introduces the audience to one of the main characters and gives them an
understanding of what she looks like. However the setting she is in is blurred
which doesnโt give much away other than what she is like visually. From her
facial expression she looks confused and a bit fearful, this tells the audience that
she is the protagonist in the film as she looks to be quite a vulnerable character
to what the problem in the film is.. The fact that the shot is a close up means that
she is of a quite a great significance in the film as she has featured early on in
good detail.
Early on in the sequence we are also introduced to the antagonist, she is standing
opposite from Carrie, the protagonist, in a powerful and dominating stance
which shows her authority and control over Carrie suggesting that she has an
assertive temperament. Furthermore, she is shown waiting outside for her to
return, this shows her control over Carrieโs life and Carrieโs lack of freedom. Her
facial expression is not visible which leaves an element of mystery to how her
2. face looks and keeps the audience on edge because of the sense of the unknown.
The setting is outside a house, which the viewer assumes is Carrieโs, the fact that
the setting is something that everyone can relate to add to the scare factor. The
light is quite harsh but not over exposing which reflects the mood and tone of the
film, as it is a supernatural-thriller. As this scene is shown early on it indicates
that they are both main characters in the film and can be expected to feature a lot
throughout.
