The document discusses how new media technologies were used at different stages of a project. During research and planning, various presentation software like Blogger, PowerPoint and Prezi were used to present tasks. A survey was created using SurveyMonkey and research was done online. In construction, a DSLR camera and GoPro were used to film shots for the music video. Drone shots were also taken. Photoshop and Premiere Pro were used to edit assets and put together the video. For evaluation, Premiere Pro was used to edit together discussion videos and the DSLR camera was used to film the discussions. Presentation software like YouTube was then used to share the final evaluations.

Eq 4.1
1. How did you use new media
technologies in the construction
and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
2. Research & Planning Technology
• Different Presentation Software (Blogger, GIPHY, Prezi,
Emaze, Powerpoint, Piktochat, Powtoons, Slides) – I
used these different presentation software to present
all of my various research and planning tasks – By
using a variety of presentation software, I am allowed
to present my tasks in a way that should be more
refreshing for the viewer. This can be seen in the
difference between my first pop video analysis to my
unconventional music videos post. These posts are all
collected and shown on Blogger. Having a place to
show all of my presentations would’ve been much
harder with older technology. Having this technology
makes it easier to communicate my ideas to my group.
• The internet – I used the internet to gain access to all
of the presentation software, and I also used it to
complete research for different tasks, such as the Age
Ratings and Record Label research tasks – Most of
what I was able to accomplish would be nearly
impossible to do without the internet we have today.
With it, I am able to complete research, make surveys,
and use the wide variety of presentation software.
3. Research & Planning Technology
• SurveyMonkey – I used this website to create my music video
survey – Due to the existence of this website, I was able to
create my music video survey and email it to various people.
After some time, I was then able to gather the answers to the
survey, and use that information as research to see what
people would want from our music video. This is important as
collecting this kind of information without the technology
would mean having to ask people one by one in person, which
would take much more time than the survey we created
• HP Pro Scanner – We utilised this in order to scan in our
storyboards to make our animatic, as well as the draft for our
ancillaries. – With this scanner, we could take our
storyboards/drafts that we had drawn up and coloured in, and
scan them onto the computer so that we could showcase our
ideas and then (in the case of our music video) put them
together for our animatic. The animatic would’ve taken much
more time to make had we not been in possession of a scanner.
We would have to take the photos manually and upload them
through the computer, which could result in a lower quality for
our animatic.
• Adobe Premiere Pro – We used this editing software in order to
edit our Animatic – With this editing software, we were able to
add effects such as fade in/fade out and various sound effects
in order to make our Animatic as close as what we imagined the
real video would be. We were also able to have the song play
along with our animatic, which helped us decide where to cut
certain parts of the song, and gave us ideas on what to do for
the actual video.
4. Construction Technology• DSLR Camera – We used this camera to take a majority of the shots in our music video.
These included: Mid-shots, long shots, close ups, high angle shots and all of the shots of
Devlin’s character in the “nightmare” room, as well as the shots necessary for our ancillary
products – With this camera, we were able to change the various features of the shot, such
as the zoom and focus to achieve the highest quality possible for all of the shots that we
took. None of the shots are blurry or out of focus and we were successfully able to transfer
all of the shots we took onto the computer.
• GoPro – With the GoPro camera and equipment, we were able to film all of the shots of
Devlin lip-syncing and shots from the drone – This type of camera allows us to get a
perspective for the music video that wasn’t previously possible. The shots move whilst
Devlin is moving, as he is in control of the shot, making all of them feel as if you are walking
along with Devlin, which makes the shot seem a lot more intimate. This is helpful for our
star image as it makes Devlin seem much more down to earth and real, on the same level
as his audience. This along with the fact that we see him as an outcast for the majority of
the video makes him relatable to our target audience. Creating the same effect and
intimacy would’ve been significantly more difficult if we only had a DSLR.
• Drone – With the drone, we were able to get shots of Devlin from extremely high up, as
well as the scenery around him – This allowed us to obtain two important shots. The first
being the shot of the general scenery, that we later used in our ancillary product. The rest
of our digipak is focussed purely on Devlin, and he always takes up a large portion of the
frame. Therefore, having this shot from such a far distance away creates the feeling that
Devlin’s character is small and insignificant in this world. This similar effect is achieved in
the music video, where Devlin is lip-syncing to the drone, but it’s very high up, creating a
high angle shot, which shows that Devlin has very little power over his current situation and
feelings. Having these shots and creating this feeling of insignificance would have been
impossible without the drone being able to take the shots from so high up.
5. Construction Technology
• Different Presentation Software – Much like our Research & Planning phase,
we used these tools to present the tasks (Production Posts) that we had
completed – We once again utilised Blogger to show all of the production
posts that we had completed in a single place. This was also made easier with
the feature on Blogger that allows you to categorize your posts, so all of our
production posts could be in the same place. Having these production posts
gives us a clear timeline on what we worked on and when we did it, which was
good to look at once we’d reached our evaluation stage
• Photoshop – This software allowed us to create our ancillary products (our
advertisement and album digipak) – This software allowed us to manipulate
the images that we previously took from our DSLR camera, to try and create a
meaning and image that is similar to the one portrayed in our music video. For
example removing every colour except for yellow was an essential part in the
ancillary task in terms of making Devlin stand out and seem like an outcast.
Creating this meaning wouldn’t have been possible with older technology.
• Adobe Premiere Pro – This software allowed us to edit together our music
video – Thanks to this software we were able to add more of the meaning to
our piece that would be impossible to show without having editing software.
For example, the text that appears in front of Devlin in the second
“nightmare” scene, and the colour key we used in the shots by the river. Both
of these shots were needed to illustrate that Devlin’s character is an outcast
and that he doesn’t have anyone for the majority of the video. This software
also allowed us to remedy many of the mistakes we could’ve made while
filming and salvage some shots. For example, the scene where the song
restarts after Devlin comes out of the shop, is cut with something else to hide
that his lip-syncing wasn’t spot on.
6. Evaluation Technology
• Adobe Premiere Pro – Finally, we used the editing software to piece
together our discussions for the evaluation questions – We once
again used the effects of Premiere Pro to help us illustrate our
points and explain our points in a way that wouldn’t have been
possible without editing software. The main thing that we were
able to do was overlay the footage we filmed with footage from the
examples that we speak about. For example, in the picture on the
right, the footage on screen shows an Eminem poster, whilst we
were talking about the inspiration for our ancillary project.
Presentation Software (YouTube) – We used all of the previously
mentioned software, as well as use of YouTube to present our
evaluations – Once again, we used a variety of different software in
order to present our tasks in different ways. This time we decided
to include videos of us discussing the evaluation, to deviate from
the previous presentations, which all consisted of just text and
images. This allows us to talk about what we think more freely and
give a voice to each individual person in the group.
• DSLR Camera – Finally, we used the DSLR to film our discussions –
By using the DSLR, we were able to compose the shot of our
discussion so as to include all of us in the video, as well as leave
space for a clip to help illustrate our points. We were then able to
upload our clips to the computer, where we could do what we
needed to complete them.
