Meaning of Enviornment
Term environment –derived from French word “environer”
Which means “surroundings” .
In simple terms, whatever we see in our surroundings , are
collectively called environment.
Components of the environment
NATURAL (PHYSICAL) ENVIRONMENT
 All those things that are naturally
existing around us are together
called natural environment. These
things are the free gifts of nature.
For example , plants, animals,
land, air, water, etc.

ABIOTIC
ENVIRONMEN
T
This environment
include the world of
living organisms for
examples, human being,
plants, animals, insects
etc.
This refers to the
world of non living
elements . For
examples land, air,
water, etc.
Spheres of the Earth
Major Domains of the Earth
LITHOSPHERE
•It is the solid crust or the hard top layer of the
earth.
•Lithosphere has many ups and downs. It consists
of different types of landscapes such as
mountains, plateaus, hills, valleys, etc.
•The landscapes are found over the continents and ocean
floors.
•The lithosphere is made up of various rocks and minerals.
•It is a source of various mineral resources such as coal,
aluminium, manganese, lead, zinc, oil, etc.
•The lithosphere is also known as the the home of different
plants and animals.
•It provides land for growing crops and human settlement.
•The lithosphere is covered with thin layer of soil.
ATMOSPHERE
The thin layer of air that surrounds the earth is
known as the atmosphere.
•It extends upto a height of 1600 km
from the earth surface.
•The atmosphere is holded around the
earth by its gravitational force.
•It consist of various gases, such as,
oxygen, nitroge, carbon dioxide, neon,
ozone, etc. as well as dust and water
vapours.
•The atmosphere acts as a thick blanket which
protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays of
the sun.
•The changes in the atmosphere bring changes
in the weather and climate. Air provides us all
the weather related phenomena such as wind,
rain, etc.
•The atmosphere acts as a big air conditioner
moderating the extremes of heat and cold.
•It also contains life givnig gases like oxygen
and carbon dioxide.
HYDROSPHERE
The domain of water is referred to as hydrosphere. Oceans,
seas, lakes and rivers collectively from the hydrosphere. It is
essential for human beings, plants and animals.
•It provides us great variety of sea foods and minerals.
•It provides a natural link between the continents.
•Oceans are the main component of the hydrosphere.
The elevation of any landform is measured by the
ocean floor.
•It is also used as means of transport by the people.
BIOSPHERE
It means the living world. It contains all forms of life such as
plants, animals, human beings, etc.
•It is a very significant part of the earth.
•It is the part of the earth that is occupied by living
organism.
•It extends form less than 11 km below sea level to the
tropopause.
•It provides us favorable conditions for life.
•Both the biotic and abiotic environment are
interdependent and provide a variety of food and
materials.
MAN- MADE(HUMAN) ENVIRONMENT
This includes changes and modifications of the
natural environment made by human beings.
Many things such as buildings, roads, bridges, parks,
industries, furniture, books, etc.
Humans have created these components by
modifying the natural environment.
They create such things by using their skills to satisfy
their needs.
HUMAN BEINGS AND ENVIRONMENT
•Human beings modify natural environment to satisfy
their needs. For example, they make cars, mills,
factories and manufacture many products. In this
way, our environment is changing at an increasing
rate.
•Environmental degradation has occurred especially
in the last few decades due to rapid economic
development. Now, it is globally recognised that
certain human activities like burning of fossil furls
e.g., petroleum, gas and coal in motor vehicles and
industries have resulted in raising the mean
temperature of the earth. This is known as Global
Warming.
•Humans should know their duty to maintain the
environment stability and balance. They must learn
to live and use their environment in a judicious way.
