What is the definition of environment (पर्यावरण)?
• Everything that surrounds us is environment.
• Word is taken from French language.
• The environment is the totality of all the external conditions
affecting the life, development and survival of an organism.
• It includes both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components.

Components of Environment
Environment mainly consists of atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere
and biosphere.
But it can be roughly divided into two types such as
(a) Micro environment and
(b) Macro environment.
It can also be divided into two other types such as
(c) Physical env भौतिक
(d) Biotic environment जैववक पर्यावरण

Types of ecosystem
It is of two types
(i) Natural ecosystem प्रयकृ तिक पयररस्थितिकी िंत्र : The ecosystem which exist
in nature on its own.
Example: forest, lake, ocean.
(ii) Artificial ecosystem कृ त्रत्रम पयररस्थितिकी िंत्र : Man-made ecosystems are
called artificial ecosystem.
Example: crop field, aquarium, garden.

2) Biotic component
10. KC Classes
On the basis of nutrition (पोषण) biotic components are further divided
into:
Producers उत्पयदक : All green plants and blue-green algae can produce their own
food (थवर्ं का भोजन बना सकते हैं), using abiotic components (photosynthesis),
hence called producers.
Consumers उपभोक्िय: Include all animals which depend (उत्पादकों पर तनभार) on
producers directly or indirectly for their food.
Division of Consumers
. Example: goat, deer.
(ii) Carnivores मांसाहारी: Flash eaters. Example: tiger, crocodile.
(iii) Omnivores सवााहारी: Eats both plants and animals. Example: human.
(iv) Parasites परजीवी : Live on the body of host and take food from it.
े
11. KC Classes
Example: lice(जूँ), cascuta (अमरबेि), tapeworms (फीता कृ लम)
Decomposers अपघटक: Include organisms which decompose the dead plants and
animals.
Example: bacteria, fungi. These help in the replenishment of natural resources.

• Food chain is a series of organisms in which one organism
eats another organism as food.
For example: • Grass → Deer → Lion
• In a food chain various steps where transfer of energy takes
place is called a trophic level.

18. KC Classes
• Flow of energy in a food chain is unidirectional.
• Green plants capture 1% of sunlight and convert it into food energy.
• 10 percent law : Only 10% of energy is transferred to the next trophic level.
• The remaining 90% energy is used in life processes (digestion, growth, reproduction
etc.) by present trophic level.
• Due to this gradual decrease in energy, food chains contain 3-4 trophic levels.
19. KC Classes
Biological magnification
• The concentration of harmful chemicals increases with every next trophic
level in a food chain. This is called biological magnification.
• Maximum concentration of such chemicals get accumulated in human
bodies as human occupy the top level in any food chain.
