35 ppt v2_chemistry_10_metals and non-metals basic physical and chemical properties. electrochemical series of stress metals
1. Basic physical and chemical
properties of metals and non-metals
10.2.1.13 explain the basic physical properties of metals and non-
metals;
10.2.1.14 understand the principle of the position of metals in the
reactivity series;
10.2.1.15 compose reaction equations characterizing the chemical
properties of metals and non-metals;
2. Experiment to test properties of metals and
non-metals
• No.1
• Electrical conductivity
– complete the circuit
with the test object
and see if the bulb
lights
– If it does the object
conducts electricity
• No.2
• Heat conductivity
– Touch the object in the
flask of hot water (at
the top!) Is it hot?
– If it is warm or hot the
object conducts heat
Complete your sheet at each stage. Record what each object does.
3. Experiment to test properties of metals and
non-metals
• No.3
• Malleability
– handle the objects, can
you bend them or
change their shape?
– If you can the object is
malleable
• No.4
• Magnetism
– Touch the object with
the magnet. Does the
magnet stick to it?
– If it does the object is
magnetic
Complete your sheet at each stage. Record what each object does.
5. PRACTICAL-ACTIVITY
Purpose: understand the principle of the position of metals in the reactivity series
Method
Take a dry test tube to your teacher, who will give
you a piece of calcium.
Fill a different test tube about full with water.
Carefully tip the piece of calcium into the test tube
containing the water.
Look to see if the metal has reacted in the water.
If any gas is given off, test it with a lighted splint.
Feel the tube to see if it is warm.
Record your results in a table.
Repeat the test with the other metals.
6. Reactions of metal with water
Using your results, place the metals in a list
with the most reactive first;
Make a conclusion
7. GROUP WORK
discussion
Get into 2 groups (metals and nonmetals);
Make a poster to explain the chemical properties of metals
and non metals ; you should include the following information:
tendency to donate/ receive electrons
reducing / oxidizing ability
reactions with oxygen/ water/ acids
acidic/ basic characteristics of oxides
Be ready to present
8. COMPLETE THE TABLE
Element Na Mg Al Si P S
Metal/ non metall
Formulae of oxide
Structure of oxide
Acid-base character
of oxide
pH of solution when
dissolved in water
Formulae of
acids/bases
9. Plenary
