 INTRODUCTION
 DEFINATION OF SCAFFOLDING
 THE PURPOSES OF SCAFFOLDING
 THE VARIOUS PARTS OF
SCAFFOLDING
 TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING
 CONCLUSION
INTRODUTION:-
 In the normal activities of the building construction,it becomes
necessary to have some types of temporary structure or support so as
to proceed with work.
 Scaffolding is also a temporary structure used to support workmen and
material in construction.
 People have realized its importance for safe and secure working
environment.
DEFINITION OF SCAFFOLDING:-
It is a temporary structure to provide a platform at
different level of a building over which workmen can
safely work and material can kept.
It is constructed in the form of timber or steel when
height of the wall or column or other structural member of
a building exceed about 1.5m above the floor level.
(Fig. scaffolding)
THE PURPOSES OF SCAFFOLDING:-
It provides proper positioning to workers in front of the parts
of ceiling or wall where they have to work.
It provides safety and protect workplace for workers.
It provides essential height for workers to reach any complex
position of the structure for complete their works.
THE VARIOUS PARTS OF SCAFFOLDING:-
STANDARD – The vertical member of scaffolding that either support on ground or
embedded into ground.
LEDGER -The horizontal member parallel to the wall.
PUTLOGS – The transverse pieces which are placed on ledger and support on
the wall at one end.
TRANSOMS - These are put logs but their both ends are supported on ledgers.
BRACE - These are diagonal or cross pieces fixed on the standards.
GUARDRAIL - This is a rail provided barrier like a ledgers to prevent fall of any
person from platform.
TOE BOARD - This is a barrier of minimum 150mm height placed parallel to the
ledgers and supported between put logs. It prevents slip or fall of person from
platform.
PLANK - An individual timber board that act as a flooring member of platform.
RAKER - It is an inclined member support entire load of scaffolding.
FIG.( ELEVATION OF SCAFFOLDING ) FIG.(SECTION OF SCAFFOLDING)
TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING:-
1.SINGLE OR BRICKLAYER’S SCAFFOLDING –
This is most commonly and widely used in the construction of brick work.
It consists of single row of standard placed at a distance of 1.2 m from the
wall.
The distance between the standards is about 2 m to 2.5 m.
The ledgers are attached to the standards at a vertical distance of 1.20 m to
1.8 m.
The putlogs, with one legs on the ledgers and other legs on the wall.
FIG. ( ELEVATION AND CROSS SECTION OF SINGLE SCAFFOLDING )
2. DOUBLE OR MASON’S SCAFFOLDING –
 This scaffolding is stronger than single scaffolding and it is used in the
construction of stone work.
 It consists of two rows of standards and distance between the face of wall
and the first row of standard is about 200 mm to 300 mm.
 The total framework is similar to the single scaffolding and distance between
the two rows is about 1m.
 The rakers and cross braces may be provided to make the scaffolding is more
strong as shown in figure.
 This type is also called as independent scaffolding.
FIG. ( DOUBLE OR MASON’S SCAFFOLDING )
3. CANTILEVER OR NEEDLE SCAFFOLDING-
In this types of scaffolding , the framework may be single or double
scaffolding types . But the standards are supported by a series of needles.
These needles are taken out at floor level or through opening or through hole
kept in masonry.
This types of scaffolding are useful under following situation:
1) The proper hard ground is not available for standards to rest.
2) The construction work is to carried out for upper parts of multi storied
building.
FIG. ( CANTILEVER OR NEEDLE SCAFFOLDING )
4. SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDING-
 This is very light types of scaffolding and can be used only for the
maintenance works such as painting, pointing, whitewashing etc.
The working platform is hanged from roofs by means of ropes, wire or chain .
Arrangements are made in such a way that the platform can be raised or lowered.
5. STEEL SCAFFOLDING-
 Steel scaffolding is constructed by steel tube which are fixed together by
steel couplers or fitting .
The diameter of the tube is about 40 mm to 50 mm and the thickness is about
5 mm.
This scaffolding can be used up to any height and it is strong and more
durable .
 It has more fire resistance and requires skilled labour.
FIG. ( STEEL SCAFFOLDING )
CONCLUSION:-
The right scaffolding systems are required not only to construct tall
buildings but also to carry out repairs and maintenance work of any high-
rise apartment building.
Scaffolding facilitates speedy finishing of construction work as well as
ensures the safety of workers and the common public at construction
locations.
THANK YOU
