This ppt is to explain to students how to USA is divided into different regions, states and counties ending in a brief talk about the USA overseas territories
3. Regions
Regions
The regions of the U.S. are quite distinct
and well-established. Despite having little
to no legal meaning, these regions mark
important cultural boundaries between
areas with common culture and history.
The Southwest, for example, has much
more influence from the Mexican settlers
who lived there before the U.S. acquired it.
Explore the different regions, as well as
U.S. territories.
4. States
There are 50 states and 1 district of Columbia the capital
area that is governed by the US Congress.
Each state as its own flag, governor and constitution.
Therefore each state is similar to a mini-government with
limited powers.
48 lower or contiguous state ( being state boarding
another state) plus 2 non-contiguous Alaska and Hawaii
Rhoe island is the smallest and Alaska is the biggest.

Counties
Next a state is divided into counties. As you will see from
the map some are very small and some are very big.
In New England area counties are used only be the law
courts. In other states that have broad powers in housing,
education, transportation and recreation.
In Alaska countries are called boroughs and part of the
state not in a county is called unorganised boroughs.
In Louisiana counties are called parishes.
Municipality counties are one big city within one county
such as San Francisco.
7. Towns and townships
In some states counties are divided smaller into
townships. Those states not having counties are divided
into minor civil divisions. Some townships have
government or political power where others are simply
geographic designations.
8. There are 14 in total, five are permanently inhabited.
People in the territories cannot vote for the President and they
do not have representation in the US congress. Infrastructure
and telecommunications are inferior to the lower 48 and poverty
rates are high.
Population is 3.5 million and are citizens at birth granted by
Congress expect….
American Samoa in the south Pacific 32,000 people are not

travel throughout any US state without a visa. TO become an
