6. WHAT HAVE YOU
LEARNT ABOUT
TECHNOLOGIES
FROM THE PROCESS
OF CONSTRUCTING
THIS PRODUCT?
Research
• Before creating my product I researched into the magazine industry, this allowed me
to look at all the planning and production that goes into making a magazine.
• To create a magazine which looks professional and will be successful you need to
include all of the following:
– Planning
– Models
– Cameras
– Editing of photos
– Distribution and Exchange
• I also researched into 3 different music magazines by doing an analysis of the front
cover, contents page and double page spread to show me how to construct these
pages and also to show me typical codes and conventions of a music magazine.

Planning • Whilst planning to create my magazine I had to learn about a few
technologies in order to create the most professional magazine
possible.
• Firstly, I learnt how to use a Canon camera. The Canon camera had a lot
of features which I could use for different locations such as inside and
outside, it also had settings for ‘moving’ shots and ‘close-up’ shots
which enabled me to get a better quality photo in each specific shot.
Also, the camera has a button where I was able to look at the photos on
a display on the camera so I could quickly check the photos I took to see
if they came out well and if I like them or not. Furthermore the camera
has a flash on it which enabled me to take photos in dimly lit places.
• By learning how to use the Canon camera I was then able to capture
professional photos in the production of my magazine which made my
magazine look very professional.
Production • When making my magazine I learnt how to use InDesign and Photoshop. I used
many techniques in both programmes to help me create professional photos
and my overall magazine. The specific techniques I used can be found here.
• I also used my knowledge of how to use a Canon camera from the planning of
my magazine to use in the photoshoot for my magazine.
• I learnt how to use Photoshop so that I would be able to edit my photos and
make them the highest quality possible. I learnt many techniques which helped
to edit my photos and make them a lot more professional.
• I then used InDesign to create the pages of my magazine, I also learnt many
techniques in this programme which helped me to make the most professional
looking magazine possible. For example I used the drop cap tool on my double
page spread which enlarged the first letter of my article making it look more
professional. I also set up my double page spread to have 6 columns so that it
gave the page structure and conformed to the codes and conventions of a
typical music magazine.
• During the production process I also got feedback from my audience to see what
they liked and disliked about my magazine so I could adapt it accordingly, see
this here.
What I
would
improve
on if I did
it again…
• If I was creating another magazine and repeating this process I would
do a few things differently, these include…
– Making sure I take a wider range of photographs so that I have more
choice of which to use. Making sure there are more outfit and location
changes.
– Also I would like to of changed the layout of my double page spread so
that the article would fit better on the page to make it look more
professional.
– Finally I would do more research before production of my magazine so
that I would have more information on my target audience so that I would
be able to make my magazine even more specific to them.
