Introduce Pidgin and Creoles
Pidgin and creoles studies figure prominently, there
are three reasons ;
1. Pidgins and creoles have arisen in sociocultural
situations that have proved to be of great interest to
anthropologists since the 1950s,
2. Pidgins and creoles have developed concomitantly
with new cultural worlds,
3. The cultural processes linked to pidginization and
creolization show that “enlanguagement,
PIDGN’S Language
 A pidgin is a new language which developed in
situations where speakers of different languages
need to communicate but it doesn’t share a common

worker and a native.
 Example : very cheaper -- peri cip
five -- paip
message -- masas
thousand -- tosen
CREOLES LANGUAGE

from a pidgin at a fairly precise point in time.

DIFFERENT PIDGIN AND CREOLES
State of play : Pidgins and Creoles
 Pidgin and Creoles studied in literature Have
emerged on plantations during the European
colonial which serves to facilitate the workers to
communicate with each other because the plantation
worker did not speak in the same language
 “ The plantation represents one type of stuation in
which the labor problem and the race problem
meet’’’ as Thompson.
Culture in Pidgin and Creoles Genesis
 The role of culture in pidgin genesis, proposing that
work and work related activities were the essential
cultural matrix in which these new languages
developed.
 Pidgin and creoles language that have become the
focus of much the specialized literature are the ones
that developed in association with the plantation
societies of the Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the
Pacific.
Power, knowledge
 Power exists in terms of relationship between
individuals, families, groups, corporations, states
and other units of social life.
 The context of power relationship typical is the focus
of the colonial worlds : between cultural worlds and
ideologies that meet and confront each other on the
plantation; between the worker and their master.
 The symbolic power derived from knowledge
 PCs genesis was focusing on plantations settings and
starting with culture. The development of local
cultures which the workers the social and structural
world that controlled their lives and put their
imprint, linguistic and cultural.
 The birth of PCs is as much the result of the
pragmatic need to break cultural and linguistic
isolation, as it’s a form of empowerment on the part
of their makers. Given the nature of human agency
and the socio cultural conditions that served as the
matrix of these language
