Transgressions
may trigger
escalations with
China:Gen Pande
First India Bureau
Pune: Chief of Army
Staff General Manoj
Pande on Monday said
transgressions remain
the potential trigger for
escalations along the
Line of Actual Control
(LAC) with China and
asserted India has ade-
quate reserves and was
prepared to deal with
any contingency
.
He said China has ac-
crued significant capac-
ities for force mobiliza-
tion, application, and
sustenance of military
operations and main-
tained the long-pending
boundary issue can not
be divorced from bilat-
eral relations between
the two Asian giants.
Speaking at the 2nd
Strategic Dialogue on
‘Rise of China and its
Implications for the
World’, organized by the
Savitribai Phule Pune
University and the New
Delhi-based Centre for
China Analysis and
Strategy
, General Pande
said Chinese attempts
to carry out transgres-
sions across LAC in vio-
lations of past agree-
ments remain a matter
of concern, but Army’s
preparedness remains
of a high order.

Mumbai: Designer An-
ishka Jaisinghani in
one of her messages to
Maharashtra Deputy
Chief Minister Deven-
dra Fadnavis’s wife
Amruta had claimed
that her father was in
regular contact with
NCP supremo Sharad
Pawar and Shiv Sena
(UBT) leader Uddhav
Thackeray, police told a
court here on Monday
.
The police also told
court there is possibil-
ity of involvement of
various political per-
sonalities in the con-
spiracy, which needed
to be probed.
Prosecution made
this claim while oppos-
ing Anishka’s bail plea,
however, her bail plea
was allowed on Monday
by Additional Sessions
Judge DD Almale.
While opposing bail
bail on Monday, special
public prosecutor Ajay
Misar, cited some of the
messages sent by the
accused to the deputy
CM’s wife.
As per the prosecu-
tion, in one the mes-
sages, Anishka said
‘You do not know my
father’ ..My father is
well connected with so
and so, so and so,... My
father is regularly in
contact with Sharad Pa-
war and Uddhav Thack-
eray, he will give the
video to them”.
Further, prosecution
submitted it was a
planned deep-rooted
conspiracy and that
Anishka had dared to
take a video in a high
security place.
All these aspects
need to be probed, pros-
ecution said opposing
her bail and also stress-
ing there is also the risk
of the accused abscond-
ing if given bail.
However, defence
lawyers Mrigendra Sin-
gh and Manan Sanghai
contended the sole al-
legation against Anish-
ka is demand for money
.
Anishka doesn’t hold
any office of profit for a
case under the Preven-
tion of Corruption Act,
the defence lawyers ar-
gued.
“Can I be kept be-
hind bars only because
the Deputy CM’s wife

hind bars only because
there are a number of
cases against my fa-
ther,” the advocates
said in court.

‘Public sympathy will fall with attacks on Savarkar’
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Shiv
Sena - Uddhav Balasa-
heb Thackeray on Mon-
day reminded said Con-
gress leader Rahul Gan-
dhi not to squander the
public sympathy his
disqualification as Lok
Sabha MP has garnered
by continuing to attack
freedom fighter and
Hindutva ideologue VD
Savarkar.
The truth--for which
Gandhi is fighting for
today--will not win by
making defamatory
statements against Sa-
varkar, an editorial in
Shiv Sena - UBT mouth-
piece Saamana said.
“By making defama-
tory statements against
Savarkar, the sympathy
gained by Rahul Gan-
dhi will start ebbing.
This will, for sure, put
the Maharashtra Con-
gress in a uncomforta-
ble position,” the edito-
rial said.
This comes a day af-
ter Uddhav Thackeray
asked Gandhi to refrain
from “insulting” his
“idol” Savarkar.
Thackeray said the
Maha Vikas Aghadi al-
liance of three parties
- Sena (UBT), Congress
and Nationalist Con-
gress Party (NCP) - was
formed to protect de-
mocracy and it was nec-
essary to work unitedly
for it.

an amount of Rs19,005

account. “Soon, a man
called her up claiming
to be from the bank, and
asked her to download
an app for the refund.
After that, a sum of Rs1
lakh was debited from her
account. By the time she
reached the police station,
she had lost Rs8.30 lakh
in further withdrawals,”
he said.
Thane: A case has been
filed against two persons
for allegedly cheating
people looking for jobs
abroad, a Navi Mumbai
police official said on
Monday. The accused,
including a female, took
Rs2.94 lakh from three
persons after promising
them jobs in a petroleum

Kamothe police station
official said. “The job
documents given to the
victims were fake. Later,
the accused started avoid-

causing immediate death.
The motive behind the

registered a case against
the accused. Police
personnel, on recent
instructions from senior
officials, have started
taking legal action against
people releasing their
cattle onto roads. They
say this not only hampers
the flow of vehicular and
pedestrian traffic but can
also lead to accidents.

‘Show courage,’ CM Shinde tells
Uddhav amid RaGa-Savarkar row
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Targeting
Uddhav Thackeray over
Rahul Gandhi’s re-
marks on VD Savarkar,
Chief Minister Eknath
Shinde on Monday told
the Shiv Sena - Uddhav
Balasaheb Thackeray
(UBT) leader to “show
courage” and oppose
such comments.
Shinde, who was ad-
dressing reporters
alongside Deputy CM
Devendra Fadnavis,
also said the Shiv Sena
and the Bharatiya Ja-
nata Party will hold a
‘Savarkar Gaurav
Yatra’ across the state.
“We will hold Sa-
varkar Gaurav Yatra in
every district of the
state to talk about the
contributions of Veer
Savarkar. Simultane-
ously, we will protest
against those who in-
sult Savarkar,” Fad-
navis shared.
Shinde said the
Thackeray-led outfit
had crossed all limits
when they joined the
Congress in opposing
Rahul Gandhi’s dis-
qualification as Lok
Sabha MP on March 24
after a court in Surat in
Gujarat sentenced him
to two years in jail in a
defamation case.
“What are you
(Thackeray) going to do
when you say you are
not going to tolerate Sa-
varkar’s insult. You
need to show that cour-
age,” Shinde said.
“If you have the guts,
then show it by doing
what Balasaheb Thack-
eray did,” he said, add-
ing that the Shiv Sena
founder late Bal Thack-
eray had launched a
“joda mara abhiyaan”
(hitting with slippers)
in 2004 against the then
Union minister and
Congressman Mani
Shankar Aiyar for his
remarks against Sa-
varkar.
At a rally on Sunday,
Thackeray had asked
Gandhi to refrain from
“insulting” Savarkar,
who he considered as
his “idol”.
Shinde termed
Thackeray’s move as
“belated wisdom”.
“Whatever Uddhav
Thackeray is saying
now on Savarkar’s in-
sult is belated wisdom,
when the assembly
started, Rahul Gandhi
was speaking so much
evil against Savarkar,
but those people did not
oppose it at all. Rather,
on the contrary, every-
one agitated to save Ra-
hul Gandhi’s member-
ship of parliament,”
alleged Shinde.

varkar, Chief Minis-
ter Eknath Shinde on
Monday updated his
social media accounts
and placed Savarkar’s
pictures on Twitter,
Facebook and Insta-
gram as profile pic-
tures.
The gesture came
in accordance with
the ongoing contro-
versy following Rahul
Gandhi’s “My name
is not Savarkar, won’t
apologize” remarks.
“I condemn Rahul
Gandhi’s statement
on Veer Savarkar. He
played a great role in
the country’s freedom
struggle. Due to the
contribution of such
heroes, India got free-
dom. We will hold ‘Sa-
varkar Gaurav Yatra’
in the state,” said
Eknath Shinde.
To become like Sa-
varkar, one needs to
sacrifice and have
love for the country,
Shinde said.
Shinde also took a
swipe at Uddhav
Thackeray’s condem-
nation of Rahul’s re-
mark.
“They talk about
Hindutva but they re-
main quiet for (the
sake of) politics and
the Maha Vikas Agha-
di (alliance). This is
their double stand-
ard,” Shinde alleged.

First India Bureau
Thane: Maharashtra
Governor Ramesh Bais
on Monday appealed to
corporates, educational
institutions, industries
and other agencies to
support the state gov-

develop skills among
youths. He was speak-
ing at the ground break-

“The Skill India Mis-

The mission aims to

ple and enhance their

ing them in skills of

human resource is es-
sential for inclusive
growth but government
agencies and systems

plish this task,” the gov-
ernor said.
He said the private
sector, industry, corpo-
rates, NGOs, and educa-
tional institutions hav-
ing experience in skill
training will also have
to partner in the pro-
cess of skilling. The
governor said the de-
mand for products
made up of bamboo,
bamboo furniture, and
honey, is increasing in
the world.
“There is a need to
provide training to trib-
al people in marketing,
branding and packag-
ing of their products.
Kaushal Vishwavidya-
laya should also take
initiative in this field.
This will give them
good income from for-
est produce,” he said.

pealed to skill universi-

Racecourse clears `6.75 cr
pending dues to civic body
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Royal
Western India Turf
Club (RWITC) has
cleared its pending rent
dues of Mahalaxmi
Racecourse of Rs6.75
crore and has submit-
ted an undertaking de-
manded by the Brihan-
mumbai Municipal
Corporation (BMC).
With this, the long dis-
pute between the civic
body and RWITC has
come to an end.
Eversincetheleaseof
the land expired in 2013,
the civic body has not
been accepting rent
from the RWITC which
had accumulated to
Rs6.75 crore for the fear
that it may amount to
the renewal of the lease.
Later in January, the
BMC put a condition
that it will accept the
pending dues only if the
RWITCsubmittedanun-
dertakingalongwiththe
cheque of pending dues.
BMC wanted an un-
dertaking that in the fu-
ture,theRWITC will pay
whatevertheincreasein
rent and pay the interest
on that arrear. BMC also
wanted the club to give
an undertaking that the
payment it will make,
will not be linked to the
renewal of the lease.
“We have always offered
topaythedues,butBMC
wasn’t accepting it,”
Surendra Sanas, Chair-
man of RWITC, said
“Later it wanted an un-
dertaking which we
have submitted along
withtheremainingdues
of Rs6.75cr,” Sanas
added.
The civic body wasn’t
accepting the dues say-
ing it was difficult to
decide the amount of
increase in rent, and to
put the other terms and
conditions related to
the lease since the state
government is yet to
formulate the policy for
renewal of the RWITC
lease.
With this, the
long ‘dispute’

ISRAELI UNION
JOINS PROTEST

NETANYAHU’S PLAN
ow strong democracy
is in Israel is to be
seen in the response
to a strike call given
by its largest trade
union Histradut asking all gov-
ernment employees to stay away
from work. Instantly, all Israeli
missions came to a halt and all
consular services were shut un-
til further notice. Histradut de-
cided to give the strike call to
mount pressure on Prime Min-
ister Benjamin Netanyahu to
drop his judicial reforms plan
which, it is feared by millions of
Israelis, will sound the death
knell of democracy. Histradut
has more than 700,000 members
across various sectors. Over the
last few months the Jewish state
has witnessed unprecedented
backlash over the proposed re-
forms. On Sunday Netanyahu
fired defence minister Yoav Gal-
lant for calling to halt the plan
to overhaul the judiciary for giv-
ing the government greater con-
trol in judges’ appointment.
Jews account for 81 percent of
the population while Muslims
constitute 14 percent and Chris-
tians 2 percent. Almost all are
united against judicial reforms.
H
ongress leader
Pramod Tiwari
made a preposter-
ous demand after
Rahul Gandhi’s
disqualification from the
Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha
MP who has not been a fa-
vourite of the Gandhis, said
that the Gandhi family
should be treated differently
by the law because of the sac-
rifices the family has made
for the country
. The law must
give minimum punishment.
The BJP appropriately hit
back with the charge that the
Congress wants a separate
set of laws for the Gandhi
family and freedom for Ra-
hul to abuse anyone he
deems fit. By no yardstick
can Tiwari’s demand be jus-
tified. On the contrary, BJP’s
assertion that the Gandhi
family considers itself “class
apart, elite and above the
Constitution” makes sense
in the light of Tiwari’s state-
ment.
The Congress has been ob-
serving satyagrah in several
parts of the country to pro-
test Rahul’s disqualification
from the Lok Sabha. In Par-
liament, ruckus over the is-
sue has led to proceedings
being disrupted and adjourn-
ments of the two Houses on a
daily basis. The BJP asserts
that neither the party nor the
government has anything to
do with his disqualification.
Even the Lok Sabha has no
discretionary power “as the
law is clear on the matter”.
Taking the issue to the
street and disrupting Parlia-
ment may not benefit the Con-
gress or Rahul. The institu-
tion which can grant reprieve
to Rahul is the court but so far
there’s no move to seek judi-
cial redress. The Congress ap-
pears to be depending on sym-
pathy, if any, for Rahul. Bar-
ring words of support from
other parties, the Congress is
alone in its fight.
PRAMOD TIWARI’S

C
he inaugural season of the
WPL ended with a thrilling
finale as Mumbai Indians
emerged victorious, claiming
the title despite facing a
tough challenge from the Del-
hi Capitals. The five-team
competition culminated on
Sunday with India and Mum-
bai Indians captain Harman-
preet Kaur finally leading a
side to triumphant glory as
Mumbai crossed the line with
7 wickets and 3 balls to spare.
In a nervy summit clash
between the two best teams
of the WPL, Mumbai spin-
ners and the experienced duo
of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Har-
manpreet Kaur guided Mum-
bai Indians to the title. With
Issy Wong picking up the
first three wickets and Mum-
bai spinners Hayley Mat-
thews, Saika Ishaque and
Melie Kerr keeping things
tight, the Delhi Capitals kept
losing wickets regularly that
saw them slide to 79/9. But in
a rousing fightback, Radha
Yadav and Shikha Pandey
added 52 runs off just 24 balls
in a thrilling 10th wicket
stand. With both of them fin-
ishing unbeaten on 27 each,
the Delhi side reached a re-
spectable total of 131.
Despite the modest target,
the Mumbai Indians suffered
a few early jolts and at 27/2
they had their second worst
power-playof theWPLseason.
Butacrucialpartnershipof 72

a half-century and Harman-
preet,whogotavital37,setMI
on the road to victory
.
Besides the grand finale,
the WPL made a captivating
debut and promised a bright
future for young, aspiring fe-
male cricketers in India.
Mumbai Indians’ Saika
Ishaque who took 15 wickets
was the outstanding find
amongIndiantalents.Though
she lost the Purple Cap by just
one wicket to her MI team-
mate Hayley Matthews, left-
arm spinner Ishaque took the
scalps of some of the world’s
finest batters through the sea-
son though she had a modest
spell in the final.
While WPL did not throw
up a huge number of young
talents, Shreyanka Patil and
Kanika Ahuja of Royal Chal-
lengers Bangalore made their
mark on the big stage. While
20-year-old Ahuja showed
raw talent at a young age with
her explosive batting, Patil’s
energy and enthusiasm in the
field was quite impressive.
Also, Yastika Bhatia from
Mumbai became the emerg-
ing player and won Rs 5 lakhs
in prize money
.
However, there was a clear
gap between those from the
Indian domestic circuit and
the world’s best players who
dominated the WPL. As Har-
manpreet rightly acknowl-
edged, little-known Indian
players did not get many
roles and opportunities to
play in the first season of
WPL. But experts believe
that in the long-run young
and uncapped Indian players
would emerge wiser from the
experience of playing with
the best and sharing dressing
rooms with the most knowl-
edgeable players in the world
and gradually this will help
them realize what they need
to do to improve their skills.
Beyondyoungtalents,some
senior domestic players have
also grabbed at the opportu-
nity afforded by the WPL to
showcase their skills and give
their careers a boost. Among
these, 33-year-old pacer Shi-
kha Pandey was the most no-
table. The veteran pacer has
often been ignored quite inex-
plicably but her 10 wickets for
Delhi Capitals were seven
more than the next-best Indi-
an pace bowler. In addition,
her power-hitting in the last
wicket partnership in the
WPL final, reflected Pandey’s
huge utility
. RCB’s 32-year-old
spinner Asha Joy and 30-year-
old wicket-keeper-batter Su-
shamaVerma,wholastplayed
for India in 2020, are some of
the other nearly-forgotten
players for whom the WPL of-
fered a great chance to show
the selectors what they are
missing and keep their na-
tional hopes alive!
The women’s version of
the Indian Premier League
has been a massive commer-
cial success and the WPL has
become the second-most lu-
crative domestic women’s
sports competition after US
professional basketball. The
way the tournament was con-
ducted, the response to the
matches and the superb TV
ratings made the WPL seem
like a festival for women’s
cricket. Now, the effort
should be that this momen-
tum is maintained going fur-
ther so that the league can be
a ‘game changer’ for women’s
cricket in the years to come.

New Delhi: Jyotiradi-

had started peddling a
story that Shivraj Singh
Chouhan was being re-
moved and Scindia was
being made the CM. But
now no such mood is
visible in the BJP which
is neither going to
change the CM nor is it
going to declare anyone
as the chief ministerial
candidate. Informed
sources of the party say
that the party will con-
test the elections keep-
ing Chouhan as the CM
and will seek votes by
promoting his schemes.
Scindia’s supporters
are now preparing to
launch his son in polls.
It has been told that
Scindia’s son Mahanar-
yaman Scindia can be
contested from any tra-
ditional seat of the fam-
ily. Although it is not
easy in BJP. There are
few exceptions in which
both father and son got
ticket and both are
members of one house
or the other. Keep in
mind that Scindia him-
self is in Rajya Sabha
and his Lok Sabha seat
is also vacant, on which
it is being said that he
will contest the elec-
tions next year. That’s
why he wants the party
to give the assembly
ticket to their son. For
this, the son is being
senttopublicprograms,
inaugurations, laying
of foundation stones,
etc. are being done by
him. Meanwhile, a
knowledgeable leader
at the Congress head-
quarters in Delhi said
that if Scindia wants a
ticket for his son as
well, he will have to join
the Congress, as it is dif-
ficult in the BJP.

SP keeps India growth
aim at 6% for fiscal 2024
New Delhi (PTI): SP
Global Ratings on Monday
kept its forecast for India’s
economic growth un-
changed at 6% in the fiscal
year starting April 1, be-
fore rising to 6.9% in the
following year.
In the quarterly econom-
ic update for Asia-Pacific,
SP saw inflation rate eas-
ing to 5% in 2023-24 fiscal,
from 6.8% in the current
financial year.
It saw India’s gross do-
mestic product (GDP) like-
ly growing by 7% in the
current financial year end-
ing March 31 (2022-23), be-
fore slowing to 6% in the
next 2023-24 fiscal.
“India leads, with aver-
age growth of 7% in 2024-
2026,” the update said.
GDP is projected to rise
to 6.9% in the following
two financial years -- 2024-
25 and 2025-26 and rising to
7.1% in 2026-27.
“In India, domestic de-
mand has traditionally led
the economy
. But it has be-
come more sensitive to the
global cycle lately, in part
due to rising commodity
exports; and its year-on-
year GDP growth slowed to
4.4% in the fourth quarter
(October-December 2022),”
the rating agency said.
Pronounced core infla-
tion in India suggests little
slack in these economies, it
said.

Court sends ‘bookie’ Anil Jaisinghani to 14-day judicial custody
AMRUTA FADNAVIS BRIBE CASE
Mumbai (PTI): A court
here on Monday re-
mandedsuspectedbook-
ie Anil Jaisinghani and
his cousin Nirmal to 14-
day judicial custody in a
case pertaining to al-
leged blackmail and at-
tempted bribery of Am-
ruta Fadnavis, the wife
of Deputy Chief Minis-
ter Devendra Fadnavis.
Anil Jaisinghani,
who was arrested last
week from Gujarat, and
Nirmal were produced
before additional ses-
sions judge D D Almale
at the end of their police
remand on Monday
.
The investigation
agency, represented by
special public prosecu-
tor Ajay Misar, sought
extension of their cus-
tody for five days. How-
ever, Saying that fur-
ther investigation can
be carried out without
the custody of the ac-
cused, the court sent
the accused to judicial
custody. After being re-
manded in judicial cus-
tody, the accused moved
a bail application,
which will be heard on
Tuesday
.
Misar submitted
that while there has
been some progress, in-
vstigators are yet to
recover the documents
used for purchasing
the SIM card used in
the mobile handset
(used while commit-
ting the crime). They
are also looking into
the identity of the per-
son who shot the vide-
os, Misar said, adding
that this required ad-
ditional further custo-
dy of five days is re-
quired.
However, advocate
Mrigendra Singh and
Manan Sanghai, appear-
ing for Anil and Nirmal,
submitted the entire in-
vestigation had been
completed and nothing
further remains to be
investigated.
Singh also told the
court Anil Jaisinghani
is suffering from blood
pressure and asthma.
The court, after hear-
ing both sides, said the
grounds put forth by the
investigation officer for
extension of police cus-
tody are almost similar
to the ones mentioned
in the earlier remand
paper.
Hence, both the ac-
cused are sent to judi-
cial custody till April 10,
the court said.
Anil’s daughter An-
ishka Jaisinghani is
also an accused in the
case. The court granted
her bail on Monday.
They have been booked
under IPC sections for
conspiracy and extor-
tion and provisions of
the Prevention of Cor-
ruption Act.

Ex-Guv’s remarks on Shivaji
not a criminal offence: HC
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Bombay
High Court has dis-
missed a petition seek-
ing action against for-
mer Governor Bhagat
Singh Koshyari and
BJP MP Sudhanshu
Trivedi for their state-
ments on Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj and
other icons, saying
their remarks prima
facie do not constitute
an offence under any
criminal law.
The high court also
said that the statements
reflect the perception
and opinion of the
speaker about those fig-
ures with an aim to per-
suade the audience, and
the intention appears to
be to enlighten society
for its betterment.
Justices Sunil
Shukre and Abhay
Waghwase, on March
20 dismissed a petition
filed by Panvel resident
Rama Katarnaware,
who belongs to the
Scheduled Caste (SC)
community.
The petitioner
claimed that the state-
ments made by Koshy-
ari and Trivedi who
are non-SC or Sched-
uled Tribes (ST) mem-
bers, at public speech-
es are disrespectful to
these late political fig-
ures who were held in
high esteem by mem-
bers of society in gen-
eral and members of
the SC/ST communi-
ties in particular.
The petitioner re-
ferred to several objec-
tionable statements
made by Koshyari and
Trivedi on Shivaji Ma-
haraj, Mahatma Phule
and Savitribai Phule
and “Marathi manoos”.
“These statements
cannot be seen, by any
stretch of the imagina-
tion, to be disrespect-
ful to any great person,
held in high esteem by
the members of the so-
ciety in general and by
the members of the
Scheduled Castes and
the Scheduled Tribes
in particular,” the
judges said in the or-
der, which was made
available recently.
Koshyari, whose ten-
ure was dogged by con-
troversies caused by his
utterances about Shiva-
ji Maharaj, social re-
formers Mahatma
Phule and his wife
Savitribai and Marathi
people, stepped down
from the post of the gov-
ernor last month.
He had faced flak for
calling Shivaji Maha-
raj an ‘icon of olden
times’, while Trivedi
had allegedly said that
the founder of the
Maratha empire had
apologized to Mughal
emperor Aurangzeb.
BS Koshyari had come under heavy fire for calling the Maratha king an ‘icon of olden times’

An in-depth consideration of the re-
ferred statements would tell us that
they are in the nature of the analysis of
history and the lessons to be learnt from histo-
ry… They also show the intention of the speak-
er, which is that at least in the present times,
we should learn from history and also realise
the consequences of following certain traditions
and what may happen perhaps for the worst, if
those traditions are followed.

Since class fourth, he had the

the way. Being from a small
town it was not easy to make
people understand what fash-

more challenging to present his
work. However, Kingshuk Bha-
duri never gave up, he used to
travel to Dehradun for his work
and all that effort was worth it
when he successfully launched
his own brand Kamakhya.

  • 1. Transgressions may trigger escalations with China:Gen Pande First India Bureau Pune: Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande on Monday said transgressions remain the potential trigger for escalations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and asserted India has ade- quate reserves and was prepared to deal with any contingency . He said China has ac- crued significant capac- ities for force mobiliza- tion, application, and sustenance of military operations and main- tained the long-pending boundary issue can not be divorced from bilat- eral relations between the two Asian giants. Speaking at the 2nd Strategic Dialogue on ‘Rise of China and its Implications for the World’, organized by the Savitribai Phule Pune University and the New Delhi-based Centre for China Analysis and Strategy , General Pande said Chinese attempts to carry out transgres- sions across LAC in vio- lations of past agree- ments remain a matter of concern, but Army’s preparedness remains of a high order. ‘Well connected”, Anishka told Amruta, claims police First India Bureau Mumbai: Designer An- ishka Jaisinghani in one of her messages to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Deven- dra Fadnavis’s wife Amruta had claimed that her father was in regular contact with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, police told a court here on Monday . The police also told court there is possibil- ity of involvement of various political per- sonalities in the con- spiracy, which needed to be probed. Prosecution made this claim while oppos- ing Anishka’s bail plea, however, her bail plea was allowed on Monday by Additional Sessions Judge DD Almale. While opposing bail bail on Monday, special public prosecutor Ajay Misar, cited some of the messages sent by the accused to the deputy CM’s wife. As per the prosecu- tion, in one the mes- sages, Anishka said ‘You do not know my father’ ..My father is well connected with so and so, so and so,... My father is regularly in contact with Sharad Pa- war and Uddhav Thack- eray, he will give the video to them”. Further, prosecution submitted it was a planned deep-rooted conspiracy and that Anishka had dared to take a video in a high security place. All these aspects need to be probed, pros- ecution said opposing her bail and also stress- ing there is also the risk of the accused abscond- ing if given bail. However, defence lawyers Mrigendra Sin- gh and Manan Sanghai contended the sole al- legation against Anish- ka is demand for money . Anishka doesn’t hold any office of profit for a case under the Preven- tion of Corruption Act, the defence lawyers ar- gued. “Can I be kept be- hind bars only because the Deputy CM’s wife has lodged a case against me. Can a daughter be kept be- hind bars only because there are a number of cases against my fa- ther,” the advocates said in court. AMRUTA FADNAVIS BRIBE CASE Bookie’s daughter claims father was in contact with Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray Can I be kept behind bars only because the Deputy CM’s wife has lodged a case against me. The truth--for which Gandhi is fighting for today--will not win by making defamatory statements against Sa- varkar, an editorial in Shiv Sena - UBT mouth- piece Saamana said. “By making defama- tory statements against Savarkar, the sympathy gained by Rahul Gan- dhi will start ebbing. This will, for sure, put the Maharashtra Con- gress in a uncomforta- ble position,” the edito- rial said. This comes a day af- ter Uddhav Thackeray asked Gandhi to refrain from “insulting” his “idol” Savarkar. Thackeray said the Maha Vikas Aghadi al- liance of three parties - Sena (UBT), Congress and Nationalist Con- gress Party (NCP) - was formed to protect de- mocracy and it was nec- essary to work unitedly for it. The senior citizen had pur- chased six towels online, but instead of Rs1,169, an amount of Rs19,005 was debited from her account. “Soon, a man called her up claiming to be from the bank, and asked her to download an app for the refund. After that, a sum of Rs1 lakh was debited from her account. By the time she reached the police station, she had lost Rs8.30 lakh in further withdrawals,” he said. Thane: A case has been filed against two persons for allegedly cheating people looking for jobs abroad, a Navi Mumbai police official said on Monday. The accused, including a female, took Rs2.94 lakh from three persons after promising them jobs in a petroleum firm in Singapore, the Kamothe police station official said. “The job documents given to the victims were fake. Later, the accused started avoid- ing their calls. No arrest has been made in the case. Further investigation is underway,” he said. Thane: A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Thane district of for allegedly killing his 31-year-old colleague at an industrial unit over a petty issue, police said on Monday. According to a Thane police official, the accused used an iron rod to attack his colleague on the factory premises, causing immediate death. The motive behind the attack remains unknown as of now. Mumbai: Four individ- uals who own stables have been charged by the Bhadrakali police for releasing their cattle onto the streets of Ghas Bazaar in Mumbai. The animals were discov- ered wandering around the area during the early hours of Saturday night. The police have registered a case against the accused. Police personnel, on recent instructions from senior officials, have started taking legal action against people releasing their cattle onto roads. They say this not only hampers the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic but can also lead to accidents. 2 BOOKED FOR FRAUD ON PRETEXT OF JOB ABROAD ‘Show courage,’ CM Shinde tells Uddhav amid RaGa-Savarkar row First India Bureau Mumbai: Targeting Uddhav Thackeray over Rahul Gandhi’s re- marks on VD Savarkar, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday told the Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) leader to “show courage” and oppose such comments. Shinde, who was ad- dressing reporters alongside Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, also said the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Ja- nata Party will hold a ‘Savarkar Gaurav Yatra’ across the state. “We will hold Sa- varkar Gaurav Yatra in every district of the state to talk about the contributions of Veer Savarkar. Simultane- ously, we will protest against those who in- sult Savarkar,” Fad- navis shared. Shinde said the Thackeray-led outfit had crossed all limits when they joined the Congress in opposing Rahul Gandhi’s dis- qualification as Lok Sabha MP on March 24 after a court in Surat in Gujarat sentenced him to two years in jail in a defamation case. “What are you (Thackeray) going to do when you say you are not going to tolerate Sa- varkar’s insult. You need to show that cour- age,” Shinde said. “If you have the guts, then show it by doing what Balasaheb Thack- eray did,” he said, add- ing that the Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thack- eray had launched a “joda mara abhiyaan” (hitting with slippers) in 2004 against the then Union minister and Congressman Mani Shankar Aiyar for his remarks against Sa- varkar. At a rally on Sunday, Thackeray had asked Gandhi to refrain from “insulting” Savarkar, who he considered as his “idol”. Shinde termed Thackeray’s move as “belated wisdom”. “Whatever Uddhav Thackeray is saying now on Savarkar’s in- sult is belated wisdom, when the assembly started, Rahul Gandhi was speaking so much evil against Savarkar, but those people did not oppose it at all. Rather, on the contrary, every- one agitated to save Ra- hul Gandhi’s member- ship of parliament,” alleged Shinde. The gesture came in accordance with the ongoing contro- versy following Rahul Gandhi’s “My name is not Savarkar, won’t apologize” remarks. “I condemn Rahul Gandhi’s statement on Veer Savarkar. He played a great role in the country’s freedom struggle. Due to the contribution of such heroes, India got free- dom. We will hold ‘Sa- varkar Gaurav Yatra’ in the state,” said Eknath Shinde. To become like Sa- varkar, one needs to sacrifice and have love for the country, Shinde said. Shinde also took a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray’s condem- nation of Rahul’s re- mark. “They talk about Hindutva but they re- main quiet for (the sake of) politics and the Maha Vikas Agha- di (alliance). This is their double stand- ard,” Shinde alleged. SKILL INDIA Maha governor underlines need for skill development of youth First India Bureau Thane: Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais on Monday appealed to corporates, educational institutions, industries and other agencies to support the state gov- ernment in its effort to develop skills among youths. He was speak- ing at the ground break- ing ceremony for a Ma- harashtra State Skill University building and an industrial training institute at Panvel in Navi Mumbai. “The Skill India Mis- sion launched by the government aims to create a skilled work- force for employment. The mission aims to skill over 40 crore peo- ple and enhance their employability by train- ing them in skills of their choice. A skilled human resource is es- sential for inclusive growth but government agencies and systems alone cannot accom- plish this task,” the gov- ernor said. He said the private sector, industry, corpo- rates, NGOs, and educa- tional institutions hav- ing experience in skill training will also have to partner in the pro- cess of skilling. The governor said the de- mand for products made up of bamboo, bamboo furniture, and honey, is increasing in the world. “There is a need to provide training to trib- al people in marketing, branding and packag- ing of their products. Kaushal Vishwavidya- laya should also take initiative in this field. This will give them good income from for- est produce,” he said. The governor ap- pealed to skill universi- ties to design innova- tive courses for women. “India was the skill capital of the world three centuries ago. Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi announced the Skill India cam- paign on July 15, 2015, in which he pledged to make 400 million people from all over India skilled under this cam- paign,” he added. With this, the long dis- pute between the civic body and RWITC has come to an end. Eversincetheleaseof the land expired in 2013, the civic body has not been accepting rent from the RWITC which had accumulated to Rs6.75 crore for the fear that it may amount to the renewal of the lease. Later in January, the BMC put a condition that it will accept the pending dues only if the RWITCsubmittedanun- dertakingalongwiththe cheque of pending dues. TOP TWEETS ISRAELI UNION JOINS PROTEST AGAINST PM NETANYAHU’S PLAN ow strong democracy is in Israel is to be seen in the response to a strike call given by its largest trade union Histradut asking all gov- ernment employees to stay away from work. Instantly, all Israeli missions came to a halt and all consular services were shut un- til further notice. Histradut de- cided to give the strike call to mount pressure on Prime Min- ister Benjamin Netanyahu to drop his judicial reforms plan which, it is feared by millions of Israelis, will sound the death knell of democracy. Histradut has more than 700,000 members across various sectors. Over the last few months the Jewish state has witnessed unprecedented backlash over the proposed re- forms. On Sunday Netanyahu fired defence minister Yoav Gal- lant for calling to halt the plan to overhaul the judiciary for giv- ing the government greater con- trol in judges’ appointment. Jews account for 81 percent of the population while Muslims constitute 14 percent and Chris- tians 2 percent. Almost all are united against judicial reforms. H ongress leader Pramod Tiwari made a preposter- ous demand after Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha MP who has not been a fa- vourite of the Gandhis, said that the Gandhi family should be treated differently by the law because of the sac- rifices the family has made for the country . The law must give minimum punishment. The BJP appropriately hit back with the charge that the Congress wants a separate set of laws for the Gandhi family and freedom for Ra- hul to abuse anyone he deems fit. By no yardstick can Tiwari’s demand be jus- tified. On the contrary, BJP’s assertion that the Gandhi family considers itself “class apart, elite and above the Constitution” makes sense in the light of Tiwari’s state- ment. The Congress has been ob- serving satyagrah in several parts of the country to pro- test Rahul’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha. In Par- liament, ruckus over the is- sue has led to proceedings being disrupted and adjourn- ments of the two Houses on a daily basis. The BJP asserts that neither the party nor the government has anything to do with his disqualification. Even the Lok Sabha has no discretionary power “as the law is clear on the matter”. Taking the issue to the street and disrupting Parlia- ment may not benefit the Con- gress or Rahul. The institu- tion which can grant reprieve to Rahul is the court but so far there’s no move to seek judi- cial redress. The Congress ap- pears to be depending on sym- pathy, if any, for Rahul. Bar- ring words of support from other parties, the Congress is alone in its fight. PRAMOD TIWARI’S BIZARRE DEMAND Congress leader Pramod Tiwari made a preposterous demand after Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the LS. The RS MP who has not been a favourite of the Gandhis, said that the Gandhi family should be treated differently by the law because of the sacrifices the family has made for the country C he inaugural season of the WPL ended with a thrilling finale as Mumbai Indians emerged victorious, claiming the title despite facing a tough challenge from the Del- hi Capitals. The five-team competition culminated on Sunday with India and Mum- bai Indians captain Harman- preet Kaur finally leading a side to triumphant glory as Mumbai crossed the line with 7 wickets and 3 balls to spare. In a nervy summit clash between the two best teams of the WPL, Mumbai spin- ners and the experienced duo of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Har- manpreet Kaur guided Mum- bai Indians to the title. With Issy Wong picking up the first three wickets and Mum- bai spinners Hayley Mat- thews, Saika Ishaque and Melie Kerr keeping things tight, the Delhi Capitals kept losing wickets regularly that saw them slide to 79/9. But in a rousing fightback, Radha Yadav and Shikha Pandey added 52 runs off just 24 balls in a thrilling 10th wicket stand. With both of them fin- ishing unbeaten on 27 each, the Delhi side reached a re- spectable total of 131. Despite the modest target, the Mumbai Indians suffered a few early jolts and at 27/2 they had their second worst power-playof theWPLseason. Butacrucialpartnershipof 72 between Sciver-Brunt who hit a half-century and Harman- preet,whogotavital37,setMI on the road to victory . Besides the grand finale, the WPL made a captivating debut and promised a bright future for young, aspiring fe- male cricketers in India. Mumbai Indians’ Saika Ishaque who took 15 wickets was the outstanding find amongIndiantalents.Though she lost the Purple Cap by just one wicket to her MI team- mate Hayley Matthews, left- arm spinner Ishaque took the scalps of some of the world’s finest batters through the sea- son though she had a modest spell in the final. While WPL did not throw up a huge number of young talents, Shreyanka Patil and Kanika Ahuja of Royal Chal- lengers Bangalore made their mark on the big stage. While 20-year-old Ahuja showed raw talent at a young age with her explosive batting, Patil’s energy and enthusiasm in the field was quite impressive. Also, Yastika Bhatia from Mumbai became the emerg- ing player and won Rs 5 lakhs in prize money . However, there was a clear gap between those from the Indian domestic circuit and the world’s best players who dominated the WPL. As Har- manpreet rightly acknowl- edged, little-known Indian players did not get many roles and opportunities to play in the first season of WPL. But experts believe that in the long-run young and uncapped Indian players would emerge wiser from the experience of playing with the best and sharing dressing rooms with the most knowl- edgeable players in the world and gradually this will help them realize what they need to do to improve their skills. Beyondyoungtalents, some senior domestic players have also grabbed at the opportu- nity afforded by the WPL to showcase their skills and give their careers a boost. Among these, 33-year-old pacer Shi- kha Pandey was the most no- table. The veteran pacer has often been ignored quite inex- plicably but her 10 wickets for Delhi Capitals were seven more than the next-best Indi- an pace bowler. In addition, her power-hitting in the last wicket partnership in the WPL final, reflected Pandey’s huge utility . RCB’s 32-year-old spinner Asha Joy and 30-year- old wicket-keeper-batter Su- shamaVerma, wholastplayed for India in 2020, are some of the other nearly-forgotten players for whom the WPL of- fered a great chance to show the selectors what they are missing and keep their na- tional hopes alive! The women’s version of the Indian Premier League has been a massive commer- cial success and the WPL has become the second-most lu- crative domestic women’s sports competition after US professional basketball. The way the tournament was con- ducted, the response to the matches and the superb TV ratings made the WPL seem like a festival for women’s cricket. Now, the effort should be that this momen- tum is maintained going fur- ther so that the league can be a ‘game changer’ for women’s cricket in the years to come. As elections to the Madhya Pradesh Assembly are nearing, Scin- dia has started uniting his sup- porters and is pres- s u r i z - ing the p a r t y h i g h command to declare him as the CM candi- date. His supporters had started peddling a story that Shivraj Singh Chouhan was being re- moved and Scindia was being made the CM. But now no such mood is visible in the BJP which is neither going to change the CM nor is it going to declare anyone as the chief ministerial candidate. Informed sources of the party say that the party will con- test the elections keep- ing Chouhan as the CM and will seek votes by promoting his schemes. Scindia’s supporters are now preparing to launch his son in polls. It has been told that Scindia’s son Mahanar- yaman Scindia can be contested from any tra- ditional seat of the fam- ily. Although it is not easy in BJP. There are few exceptions in which both father and son got ticket and both are members of one house or the other. Keep in mind that Scindia him- self is in Rajya Sabha and his Lok Sabha seat is also vacant, on which it is being said that he will contest the elec- tions next year. That’s why he wants the party to give the assembly ticket to their son. For this, the son is being senttopublicprograms, inaugurations, laying of foundation stones, etc. are being done by him. Meanwhile, a knowledgeable leader at the Congress head- quarters in Delhi said that if Scindia wants a ticket for his son as well, he will have to join the Congress, as it is dif- ficult in the BJP. Justices Sunil Shukre and Abhay Waghwase, on March 20 dismissed a petition filed by Panvel resident Rama Katarnaware, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.
