Pak detains 30 fishermen, 5 boats off Guj coast
First India Bureau
Ahmedabad: Pakistani
authorities captured at
least 30 Indian fisher-
men off the Porbandar
coast in the Arabian Sea
on Saturday
. A total of
five boats were also
seized by the Pakistan
Maritime Security
Agency (PMSA) in Por-
bandar, Wanakbara,
Okha 1, and 2 Mangrol
(Gir Somnath).
Most of the boats that
have been impounded
are from Okha and Por-
bandar. While the Paki-
stan Marine Force has
hijacked 20 boats carry-
ing120Indianfishermen
in the last 25 days, there
isresentmentamongthe
fishermen over the lack
of action from the cen-
tralorstategovernment.
Currently
, around 1,200
boats and 500 fishermen
are lodged in Pakistani
jails.
Priortothis,onFebru-

boat was seized by the
PMSA from Indian wa-
ters off the Porbandar-
Pakistan border. Earlier,
on January 28, another
boat named ‘Tulsi Mai-
ya’ was also captured.
On January 31, a contin-
gent of Border Security
Force (BSF) personnel
patrolling in the Lakh-
patwari Creek area of
Bhuj had caught a Paki-
staniboattryingtoenter
Indian waters. There
were four to five Paki-
stani fishermen aboard
the vessel. The BSF ap-
prehendedonePakistani
civilian and three Paki-
stani boats, while the
others managed to flee.
The seized boats were
searched and none of
them were suspicious.
Manish Lodhari of
the National Fee Forum
has demanded the re-
leaseof thefishermenin
Pakistan’s jails. He said
that the main reason for
crossing the border by
fishermen from both
sides is to get a good
catch. “Industrial pollu-
tion on the sea coast has
affected the aquatic life.
And, to hunt for good
fish, the fishermen
sometimes cross bor-
ders. It is a complex is-
sue and should be ad-
dressed as soon as pos-
sible,” he added.

leading the charge. His
meetings with Chief Min-
ister Uddhav Thackeray of
Shiv Sena and Nationalist
Congress Party’s Sharad
Pawar are being seen as an
attempt to stitch up a non-
Congress front against the
BJP before the 2024 elec-
tions. The meeting took
place at Thackeray initia-
tive. This unity effort ap-
pears to be a move inde-
pendent of Mamata Baner-
jee and Prashant Kishor’s
plans for a unified front.
While reaching out to re-
gional parties, both intend
to keep the Congress out of
their scheme of things.
Could KCR and Mamata
find a common meeting
ground for a unified oppo-
sition front? And a bigger
question that looms is
whether these regional
leaders, including KCR,
will be able to rein-in their
balloon-sized
ambitions in
the national interest?
There have to be a host
of reasons for the Telan-
gana Rashtra Samithi
(TRS) leader, who once
sided with the BJP in Par-
liament, to turn against
the BJP and Prime Minis-
ter Narendra Modi.
One of the reasons clear-
ly is the political threat to
the TRS. The saffron party
is making inroads in Tel-
angana and giving KCR
pinpricks with remarks on
bifurcation of the state
that please YSR Congress

blamed the BJP for not re-
leasing funds for the
state’s development.

TELANGANA’S MOVE
AGAINST THE BJP
There have to be a host
of reasons for the
Telangana Rashtra
Samithi (TRS) leader, who
once sided with the BJP
in Parliament, to turn
against the BJP and
Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
A
or those who thought that Nar-
endra Modi doesn’t care for
Muslims should revisit the dead-
ly floods of Morbi in 1979 when
thousands of people lost their
lives to this disaster. There was
a great risk of epidemic due to
rotten bodies. Most of the people
living in that area were Mus-
lims. Soon after knowing the
pathetic condition of the resi-
dents, Modi swing into action
and took them to relief camp in
Rajkot. He took personal care of
Muslims and arranged for their
sehri during the pious Ramzan
month. Modi stayed in the relief
camp for 2-3 months and left
only after settling them.
Meanwhile in New Delhi,
Chaudhary Charan Singh took
over from Morarji Desai as
Prime Minister. But he could not
the govern for even 6 months
and the experiment of Janta
front failed. Fresh elections
were held in 1980, bringing In-
dira Gandhi back to power.
However, a major political
event happened on 6th April 1980
when leaders of Jansangh found-
ed a political party - Bhartiya Ja-
nataParty-whichhasbecomethe
largest political party and is pres-
ently ruling the country
. The first
session of BJP was held in Mum-
bai where the former Prime Min-
ister and where one of the BJP’s
founding members Atal Bihari
Vajpayeehadfamouslysaid-And-
hera Chhatega, Kamal Khilega.
In 1981, the country was shak-
en up by mass conversion of Dal-
its to Muslims at Meenaxipuram
in Tamil Nadu. Sangh parivar
immediately took cognisance of
that and started Ekatm Yatra
across the country
. This embold-
ened Hindus and during these
yatra, representativ
es of Sangh
parivar connected more than 6
crore Hindus. Narendra Modi
led this campaign in Gujarat giv-
ing new dimensions to his lead-
ership skills.
Kaushik Mehta of VHP be-
lieves that the concept of this
yatra was of Narendra Modi
only
. “Every citizen of the coun-
try is one. Two raths were taken
out in the country simultane-
ously putting kumbh of Gangaji
and photo of Mother India to-
gether. This spread a meaning-
ful message to Hindus,” he said.
Meanwhile,PrimeMinisterIn-
dira Gandhi was assassinated on
31st October, 1984 and Congress
rompedhomewithgreatmajority
ridingonthesympathyvotes.The
newly formed BJP ended up win-
ning just two seats. In the next
year, assembly elections were
heldinGujaratandCongresswon
149 out of 182 seats while BJP
could manage to win just 11 seats.
This set the alarm bells on and
Sangh started sending pracha-
raks to strengthen the BJP
.
On6thDecember1986,pracha-
rak Narendra Modi was sent to
BJP by the then Sarsanghchal
ak
Bala Saheb Devras. Modi, who
was working selflessly for the
Sangh for last one and half dec-
ades, found a new path to trudge.
Soon after coming into BJP, in
1989 Modi had a tough challenge
ahead which he turned into an
opportunity. There was an elec-
tion of Ahmedabad Nagar Nig-
am. Modi took over the entire
responsibility
of poll strategy
and publicity
. He gave the slogan
– ‘Bas ab Bhajapa’. That slogan
played an important role in re-
vival of BJP and changed the
face of electoral politics. People
related with the slogan and the
political acceptability
increased
simultaneous
ly
.
After the great win at
Ahmedabad
Nagar Nigam,
Modi’s role in the party gained
prominence and he was entrust-
ed with the responsibility
of Or-
ganising Secretary in Gujarat.
Modi took out yatras to connect
with the people of the state.
While he carried out ‘Nyay yatra’
championing
the cause of farm-
ers in 1987, he also took out Lok
Shakti yatra in support of tribals
in 1988. In the same year, Modi
went on one more yatra - Kailash
Mansarovar
yatra, which was
organised by External Affairs
ministry for the first time. Soon
after he returned from the yatra,
he came to know about his fa-
ther’s ill health. He immediately
went to Vadnagar, only to see his
father taking his last breath.
Modi’s father probably was wait-
ing for the last sight of his son.
However, undeterred by his
father’s demise, Narendra
Modi left his home the next day
for a journey meant for nation
building.

Ahmedabad: A recent-

held at a Valsad school

was on Mahatma Gan-

Godse, created a stir.
Another vandalism in-

whether attempts are
being made to tarnish

Surat-based activist

Parmar addressed ‘an-
ti-Gandhi’ events held
in the state recently
and said, “They were
intentionally pro-
grammed to tarnish
the image of Gandhi.”
“For the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS), Mahatma Gan-
dhi is still a threat even
years after his death.
The current political
environment is condu-
cive for the Sangh, to
spread their agenda
and gradually replace
Gandhi with their fa-
voured people. The
Manuvadi mentality of
RSS is making these
events happen, which
are being reported
from many places
now,” asserted Parmar.
A staunch Gandhi
supporter, he added,
“The Gandhian ideol-
ogy will be more con-
solidated by such ef-
forts. One can kill Gan-
dhi, but cannot ever
kill his ideology.” He
blamed the Manuvadi
mentality and ex-
plained that it was
mainly against equali-
ty and extending equal
rights to women and
Dalits, which was advo-
cated by Gandhi.
Meanwhile, Rashtri-
ya Yuva Sangathan
Convener Vishwajeet
Roy attributed anti-
Gandhi events to the
intention of spreading
hate among some peo-
ple. “Even while doing
that, thoughts of Ma-
hatma Gandhi hamper
them. They blame Gan-
dhi for everything and
think that in this era of
social media domi-
nance, things can easi-
ly be exploited. But no,
this will further en-
hance Gandhian
thoughts,” he said.
Roy added that it is
disheartening to see
this happening in Gu-
jarat—Mahatma Gan-
dhi’s home ground.
“This is called the ruf-
fian’s way of tarnish-
ing Bapu’s image. They
want to create an illu-
sion, but while trying
to achieve that, there
will be curiosity among
the people to know
Gandhi more. He can
never be erased,” add-
ed Roy.
Police officers believe in ‘giving back’ handsome returns

Gandhinagar: As po-
lice officers get trans-
ferred to other cities
with dizzying regulari-
ty
, there are times when
they choose not to move
with their families.
This means that they
have to live in hotels as
they prefer them to
empty apartments. In
deals struck with hotel
owners, they receive
free accommodation in
their establishments,
and in return, ensure
that events and/or so-
cial functions are or-
ganized there. This has
enabled a few hotel
businessestobookhefty
profits amid the COV-
ID-19 pandemic.
According to the
sources within the po-
lice department, two
police officers stationed
in western part of
Ahmedabad have been
living in hotels. Howev-
er, they stay here free of
chargeandtheonlypay-
ment they give is by en-
suring the hotels book
events/social functions.
Hotel owners had no
complaints and were
happy that the officers
werestayingintheirho-
tels. This was because
when other hotels and
restaurant owners were
crying foul that their
businesses had been ad-
versely affected due to
nCoV
, these hotel own-
ers were literally ‘print-
ing’ money
. As hotels
and banquet halls re-
ceived event cancella-
tion calls, these hotels
were operating at full
capacity with several
event bookings, said
sources.
Apparently, there
was no set limit for the
number of guests at
events held at these ho-
tels. Sources said, “If
any family booked
rooms in these hotels
--even when there was a
restriction of 150
guests-- more than 500
guests attended social
events organized there.
When other hospitality
businesses were suffer-
ing losses, these hotels
booked huge profits, all
thanks to the police of-
ficers who had been liv-

Commenting on the re-
turns given by the offic-

“These (police) officers
have given back hand-
some gifts to hotel own-

corruption allegations
against Rajkot police
for demanding ‘com-
mission’ by police to
recover the money he
lost to financial fraud,
is a member of the
Rashtriya Swayamse-
vak Sangh (RSS). He
turned into a Bharati-
ya Janata Party (BJP)
party worker in his
youth and has been a
generous donor to both
the party and the po-
lice ever since.
With claims to be
one of the highest tax-
payers in his ward,
Sakhiya joined RSS
when he was 13-year-
old,thenJanSanghfol-
lowed by the BJP.
“When former a BJP
national leader filed
his first nomination
for the Lok Sabha in
2014, I personally do-
nated Rs1,01,00,000 to
the party fund,” Jagji-
van told First India.
For the past 25 years,
there has not been a
single MLA or MP
from Rajkot for whom
I have not given dona-
tions. Even the police
have received Rs11
lakh for the Rajkot
highway project, po-
lice welfare. If a per-
son like me is harassed
to this extent, imagine
what the common man
endures. This was not
the case before. For the
past four years, this CP
(Manoj Agarwal) has
crossed all limits and
his acts of hooligan-
ism are out in the open
now. Taking money
from both the victims
and the accused had
become his routine, he
asserted.
Calling for Agarw-
al’s suspension and an
investigation into the
corruption allega-
tions, Sakhiya said, “I
demand suspension of
this officer and all
those involved. Official
cases should be filed
against all of them.”
Meanwhile, on Feb-
ruary 18, Jagjivan pro-
duced more evidence
supporting his claims
that included a video
of two police officers
handing his nephew
Rs4.5 lakh cash at Di-
wanpara police chow-
ki. The exchange hap-
pened a day after the
allegations were made
public. However, Jagji-
van questioned the
money’s origin.
“Where did the cash
come from? If it had
come from the ac-
cused, I would have
had to go through the
courts to get it re-
leased. Also, there
should a muddamal
pavti signed by the ac-
cused. These acts are
against the law and
must be probed,” he
said.
In response to cor-
ruption claims, eight
police inspectors and
sub-inspectors from
the Rajkot crime
branchandSpecialOp-
erations Group (SOG)
have already been
transferred.

Jagjivan and his brother Mahesh Sakhiya had
claimed that Rajkot police had taken Rs75 lakh
to recover the money they lost to financial
fraud. They also alleged that a demand for an
additional Rs30 lakh had also come in from of-
ficials later. BJP MLA from Rajkot Govind Patel
had written about the role of Rajkot police in ex-
acting ‘commission’ from the Sakhiya brothers
to Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi.
News gained traction after Rajya Sabha MP
Rambhai Mokariya and MLA Arvind Raiyani also
backed the allegations. An investigation team
was formed under DGP (Training) Vikas Sahay
to investigate the allegations.

JNV SCHOOL FORMS COMMITTEE
TO PROBE RAGGING ALLEGATIONS
First India Bureau
Amreli: A committee
has been constituted
by Jawahar Navodaya
Vidhyalaya in Amreli
to investigate ragging
allegations levelled by
a Class IX student
against his seniors. If
they are proven to hold
substance, the offend-
ing students face ter-
mination from the
school.
Sashwat (name
changed), native of
Sanali village in
Kunkavav Vadia taluka
of Amreli district, was
asked by senior stu-
dents to wash their
laundry. He was beaten
up with belts for refus-
ing to comply with
their order. The young-
ster has alleged that an
argument broke out be-
tween the seniors a few
days ago over waste on
one of the senior’s
beds. And, using the in-
cident as an excuse, the
seniors had been pres-
suring him to wash
their clothes for the
past week.
Four days ago, when
Sashwat refused to
wash their clothes
again, a group of sen-
iors beat him with belts.
After the beating, he
fled from the school
hostel and returned
home, where he in-
formed his parents
about the ragging inci-
dent.
Shockingly, the hos-
tel warden was not
even aware that Sash-
wat had not been living
in the hostel for the
past three days. In fact,
he came to know about
it only when his par-
ents informed him and
complained about the
ragging.
A written applica-
tion has also been sub-
mitted by Sashwat’s
parents to Kunkavav
Vadia police station,
but an official First In-
formation Report (FIR)
has not been lodged yet,
said relatives.
However, the school’s
principal has denied
ragging even took place
on campus. “There is
no possibility of rag-
ging, as we have only
had online classes for
the last two years, as
per COVID-19 guide-
lines. And so, there is
no question of students
living at the hostel,”
claimed Vijay Kumar,
principal of Jawahar
Navodaya Vidhyalaya.
However, he also added,
“An inquiry committee
has been constituted to
look into the allega-
tions. Strict action will
be taken against the
seniors, if the allega-
tions are proven to be
correct.”

Vadodara: Three
persons were in-
jured after a por-

them in Manjal-
pur area of the
city on Sunday
morning. While
locals rescued two
people before the
arrival of fire

was rescued by the
team when it
reached the scene.
According to re-
ports, the house
owner, Bhupen-
dra Patel, and two
other members of
his family were
trapped in the
rubble.
“At around 10.30
am, we received a
call about a house
collapse and dis-
patched rescue
teams to the scene.
The two injured
people were mov-
ing, and locals also
assisted in their
rescue. However,
the house’s owner
was trapped deep
inside but we suc-
ceeded in rescuing
him. He was trans-
ported to a nearby

ment,” said fire of-
ficial Nikunj

Ahmedabad: On Sat-
urday, a 12-year-old
girl who had been
missing for a few
days was discovered
at Kalupur railway
station in the city. Ac-
cording to police, the
girl eloped with a
youth and is current-
ly undergoing medi-
cal examination.
During primary
questioning, Suhasini
(name changed) said
she began exchanging
messages with her
neighbour on a social
media platform a few
months ago. After regu-
lar chats and in-person
meetings, she fell in
love with him.
The minor also told
officials that she en-
tered into a physical
relationship two
months ago. Wanting to
be together, they both
fled to Ludhiana on Feb-
ruary 15, after making
the choice to leave their
homes. Two days after
their arrival in Ludhi-
ana, Suhasini began
feeling homesick and
insisted on returning
home. The same even-
ing the couple started
for Ahmedabad. After
reaching the city on
February 19, the youth
dropped the minor at
Kalupur railway sta-
tion and left.
The girl’s family had
reported her missing at
Satellite police station
on February 15. The girl
had not returned home
from school, according
to them. But as Suhasi-
ni’s phone was turned
off, it had been difficult
for the police to trace
her whereabouts. On
February 17, the family
had received a call from
the girl informing them
that she was in Ludhi-
ana and wanted to re-
turn home. Then she
called him from Kalu-
pur station where her
boyfriend had left her.
Satellite police have
begun searching for the
youth.

Gandhinagar: The
state witnessed a fall in
number of COVID-19
daily infections on Sun-
day, as the state report-
ed a total of 377 cases.
Nine deaths were re-
ported, of which, five
occurred in Vadodara,
two in Jamnagar, and
one each in Surat and
Bhavnagar.
With the new cases,
the case tally has now
reached 12,20,562 and
death toll to 10,896,
since the pandemic hit
in March, 2020.
The highest number
of cases was reported
in Ahmedabad (136), fol-
lowed by Vadodara (72).
It is to be noted that
with a decrease in the
infection rate, not a sin-
gle new case was report-
ed in seven districts.

Surat: At least 400 peo-
ple of Indira Nagar in
Udhana area of the
city have been living in
the dark for five days,
as the Dakshin Guja-
rat Vig Company Ltd
(DGVCL) has discon-
nected their power
connection.
According to DGV-
CL officials, the elec-
trical connections
were removed follow-
ing a complaint
lodged by the land-
owner. On the other
hand, its occupants
said that they were
given this land 60
years ago and have re-
sided there with their
families ever since.
They copped to pay-
ing their electricity
bills and municipal
taxes on time. Discon-
tinuing the electricity
supply is just a means
to harass them, al-
leged the occupants.
When applications
for new power connec-
tions were filed, offi-
cials of the DGVCL
had checked all the
documents, and after
confirmation, meters
were allotted.
Speaking on behalf
of his client, advocate
Nisar Shaikh said,
“This property was
purchased by Mahavir
Meratwala in 2017,
who had approached
the court in February
2020, to clear encroach-
ment. However, the
lockdown delayed the
process. In April 2021,
Meratwala asked DG-
VCL to disconnect the
electricity supply, and
action on that applica-
tion was taken on
Tuesday
. However, it is
against the law to dis-
connect basic facilities
when the issue is still
pending in court. Offi-
cials have to take prior
permission before tak-
ing any action.”

n anti-BJP sen-
timent is grow-
ing in Telanga-
na with Chief
Minister K.
Chandrashekar Rao (KCR)
leading the charge. His
meetings with Chief Min-
ister Uddhav Thackeray of
Shiv Sena and Nationalist
Congress Party’s Sharad
Pawar are being seen as an
attempt to stitch up a non-
Congress front against the
BJP before the 2024 elec-
tions. The meeting took
place at Thackeray initia-
tive. This unity effort ap-
pears to be a move inde-
pendent of Mamata Baner-
jee and Prashant Kishor’s
plans for a unified front.
While reaching out to re-
gional parties, both intend
to keep the Congress out of
their scheme of things.
Could KCR and Mamata
find a common meeting
ground for a unified oppo-
sition front? And a bigger
question that looms is
whether these regional
leaders, including KCR,
will be able to rein-in their
balloon-sized ambitions in
the national interest?
There have to be a host
of reasons for the Telan-
gana Rashtra Samithi
(TRS) leader, who once
sided with the BJP in Par-
liament, to turn against
the BJP and Prime Minis-
ter Narendra Modi.
One of the reasons clear-
ly is the political threat to
the TRS. The saffron party
is making inroads in Tel-
angana and giving KCR
pinpricks with remarks on
bifurcation of the state
that please YSR Congress
chief YS Jagan Mohan
Reddy, the chief minister
of Andhra Pradesh.
On Chief Minister
KCR’s birthday, the Union
Ministry of Road Trans-
port issued full-page ad-
vertisements announcing

greeting Rao. KCR has
blamed the BJP for not re-
leasing funds for the
state’s development. KCR
must remember that there
is no double-engine gov-
ernment there.
TELANGANA’S MOVE
AGAINST THE BJP
There have to be a host
of reasons for the
Telangana Rashtra
Samithi (TRS) leader, who
once sided with the BJP
in Parliament, to turn
against the BJP and
Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
A
or those who thought that Nar-
endra Modi doesn’t care for
Muslims should revisit the dead-
ly floods of Morbi in 1979 when
thousands of people lost their
lives to this disaster. There was
a great risk of epidemic due to
rotten bodies. Most of the people
living in that area were Mus-
lims. Soon after knowing the
pathetic condition of the resi-
dents, Modi swing into action
and took them to relief camp in
Rajkot. He took personal care of
Muslims and arranged for their
sehri during the pious Ramzan
month. Modi stayed in the relief
camp for 2-3 months and left
only after settling them.
Meanwhile in New Delhi,
Chaudhary Charan Singh took
over from Morarji Desai as
Prime Minister. But he could not
the govern for even 6 months
and the experiment of Janta
front failed. Fresh elections
were held in 1980, bringing In-
dira Gandhi back to power.
However, a major political
event happened on 6th April 1980
when leaders of Jansangh found-
ed a political party - Bhartiya Ja-
nataParty-whichhasbecomethe
largest political party and is pres-
ently ruling the country
. The first
session of BJP was held in Mum-
bai where the former Prime Min-
ister and where one of the BJP’s
founding members Atal Bihari
Vajpayeehadfamouslysaid-And-
hera Chhatega, Kamal Khilega.
In 1981, the country was shak-
en up by mass conversion of Dal-
its to Muslims at Meenaxipuram
in Tamil Nadu. Sangh parivar
immediately took cognisance of
that and started Ekatm Yatra
across the country
. This embold-
ened Hindus and during these
yatra, representatives of Sangh
parivar connected more than 6
crore Hindus. Narendra Modi
led this campaign in Gujarat giv-
ing new dimensions to his lead-
ership skills.
Kaushik Mehta of VHP be-
lieves that the concept of this
yatra was of Narendra Modi
only
. “Every citizen of the coun-
try is one. Two raths were taken
out in the country simultane-
ously putting kumbh of Gangaji
and photo of Mother India to-
gether. This spread a meaning-
ful message to Hindus,” he said.
Meanwhile,PrimeMinisterIn-
dira Gandhi was assassinated on
31st October, 1984 and Congress
rompedhomewithgreatmajority
ridingonthesympathyvotes.The
newly formed BJP ended up win-
ning just two seats. In the next
year, assembly elections were
heldinGujaratandCongresswon
149 out of 182 seats while BJP
could manage to win just 11 seats.
This set the alarm bells on and
Sangh started sending pracha-
raks to strengthen the BJP
.
On6thDecember1986,pracha-
rak Narendra Modi was sent to
BJP by the then Sarsanghchalak
Bala Saheb Devras. Modi, who
was working selflessly for the
Sangh for last one and half dec-
ades, found a new path to trudge.
Soon after coming into BJP, in
1989 Modi had a tough challenge
ahead which he turned into an
opportunity. There was an elec-
tion of Ahmedabad Nagar Nig-
am. Modi took over the entire
responsibility of poll strategy
and publicity
. He gave the slogan
– ‘Bas ab Bhajapa’. That slogan
played an important role in re-
vival of BJP and changed the
face of electoral politics. People
related with the slogan and the
political acceptability increased
simultaneously
.
After the great win at
Ahmedabad Nagar Nigam,
Modi’s role in the party gained
prominence and he was entrust-
ed with the responsibility of Or-
ganising Secretary in Gujarat.
Modi took out yatras to connect
with the people of the state.
While he carried out ‘Nyay yatra’
championing the cause of farm-
ers in 1987, he also took out Lok
Shakti yatra in support of tribals
in 1988. In the same year, Modi
went on one more yatra - Kailash
Mansarovar yatra, which was
organised by External Affairs
ministry for the first time. Soon
after he returned from the yatra,
he came to know about his fa-
ther’s ill health. He immediately
went to Vadnagar, only to see his
father taking his last breath.
Modi’s father probably was wait-
ing for the last sight of his son.
However, undeterred by his
father’s demise, Narendra
Modi left his home the next day
for a journey meant for nation
building.

some parties are sym-

Speaking at a rally in

“The attitude of the

people address a terror-

withdraw the cases

These people were set-
ting off blast after blast,
and the Samajwadi Par-
ty government was not
even allowing these ter-

The BJP has tradi-

comprises 776 MPs of
both the Houses and
4,120 MLAs of all the
states and Union Terri-
tories. The electoral col-
lege has 1,098,903 votes,
and a majority is 549,452
votes. As far as the value
of votes is concerned,
Uttar Pradesh has the
highestnumberof votes,
approximately83,824fol-
lowed by Maharashtra
and West Bengal.
The BJP has a brute
majority in the assem-
blies of UP and Uttara-
khand and any reduc-
tion of seats will put the
game in the opposition
camp as the Chief Min-
isters of different re-
gional parties are try-
ing to join hands.
If they join hands
and put up a joint candi-
date, the BJP will find
it difficult to get
its nominee
e l e c t e d .
The only
way would
be a divi-
sion in the opposition
camp which may be a
difficult task. After
West Bengal Chief Min-
ister Mamata Banerjee
who is trying to expand
her party, Trinamool
Congress’ footprints at
the national level, Tel-
angana Chief Minister
K. Chandrashekhar
Rao (KCR) had a
meeting with Maha-
rashtra Chief Minister
Uddhav Thackeray
.
Not only is the Mum-
bai meeting important
but KCR is also meeting
Tamil Nadu Chief Min-
ister M.K. Stalin and
Kerala Chief Minister
Pinarayi Vijayan.
Even Mamata Ba-
nerjee is likely to
travel to Hyderabad to
meet KCR. He has the
support of former
Prime Minister H.D.
Deve Gowda who could
be another possible can-
didate for President.
However the Chief
Ministerstryingtounite
en bloc is not a good sign
for the Congress which
may get isolated in the
opposition while the
BJP has to search for a
consensus candi-
date for the
Presiden-
tial poll.
K C R ’ s
new initia-
tive is to save his home
turf as the BJP is ex-
panding its base in Tel-
angana. He is being
forced to take on the
BJP due to domestic po-
litical compulsions, oth-
erwise the party had
been bailing out the BJP
on key legislation in the
Upper House since 2014.
The southern states
and Maharashtra ac-
count for more than 200
Lok Sabha seats and al-
most half of the elector-
alcollegewhichcouldbe
crucial in the next Presi-
dential poll. If the re-
gionalpartiesteamup,it
will be unlikely that the
BJP will have its way in
the choice of President.
Thus the electoral
outcome in the five
states which include UP
will impact the presi-
dential election.
If the opposition puts
up a candidate like NCP
supremo Sharad Pawar
who is capable of mus-
tering support from oth-
ers like the Trinamool
Congress, the BJD, the
TRS,theYSRCP

Munich: India's rela-

rightnowgoingthrough
a very difficult phase
after Beijing violated
agreements not to bring
the military forces in
the border, External Af-
fairs Minister S Jais-
hankar has said, em-
phasising that the state
of the border will deter-
mine the state of the
relationship.
Speaking at a panel
discussion on Saturday
at the Munich Security
Conference (MSC) 2022
in Munich, Mr Jais-
hankar said that India
was having a problem
with China along the
Line of Actual Control.
For 45 years, there
was peace, there was
stable border manage-
ment, there were no
military casualties on
the border from 1975.
That changed because
we had agreements
with China not to
bring military forces
to the border and the
Chinese violated those
agreements, the Min-
ister said.
Now, the state of the
border will determine
the state of the relation-
ship. That's natural. So
obviously, the relations
with China right now
are going through a dif-
ficult phase, he added.
The eastern Ladakh
border standoff be-
tween the Indian and
Chinese militaries
erupted following a vio-
lent clash in the Pan-
gong lake areas and
both sides gradually
enhanced their deploy-
ment by rushing in tens
of thousands of sol-

New Delhi: The com-

currently subjected to
5% import duty by the

said. Labour intensive
industries such as tex-

India and the UAE on
Feb 18 signed the CEPA
with a view to boosting
bilateral trade in goods
to $100 billion over a
five-year period and
creation of lakhs of
jobs. “While the UAE is
already India’s second

LIC’s biz plan change after
IPO a threat to private firms
Mumbai: Amend-
ments to the surplus/
profit distribution
rules for IPO-bound
LIC, which has already
improved its margins
by 700 bps to 9.9% and
will further rise to 20%
when the national in-
surer shifts its busi-
ness mix to non-partic-
ipating policies, can
give nightmares to pri-
vate players who have
been thriving on this
segment for too long,
says a report.
According to an
analysis of its IPO fil-
ings by Swiss broker-
age Credit Suisse, SBI
Life, ICICI Prudential,
HDFC Life and Max
Life will face the maxi-
mum impact of the
LIC move.
The report notes
that LIC’s margin has
already gone by up 700
bps to 9.9% after gov-
ernment amended
LIC’s surplus/profit
distribution rules
which allows it to
make a 10% shift in the
business mix from par-
ticipating policies to
non-participating poli-
cies, which is only 4%
now, which can take its
margins to 20%.
This is based on the
assumption a full tran-
sition to new surplus
distribution from 100%
for non-participating
policies now and 10%
for participating poli-
cies.
A participating (par)
insurance policy pro-
vides both guaranteed
and non-guaranteed
benefits to policyhold-
ers in the form of bo-
nus or dividend pay-
outs, while a non-par-
ticipating (non-par)
policy typically pro-
vides guaranteed ben-
efits to policyholders,
but they do not receive
profit or dividend pay-
ments.
Currently, LIC just
has 4% of its new busi-
ness premium coming
in from non-participat-
ing policies, while the
same is for its the top

Govt plans new tech
to support coal ops
New Delhi: The gov-
ernment plans to im-
plement new technolo-
gies and build digital
infrastructure to sup-
port current and fu-
ture coal mines opera-
tions, a move that
would reduce the
country’s dependency
on imports. Techno-
logical advancements
in coal mining are also
making operations
more productive.
“The objective is to
implement new tech-
nologies and build
digital infrastructure
to support current and
future ramp-up for the
mines,” according to
the government’s
draft technology road
map for the coal sector.
This involves a
strong, multi-speed
backbone information
technology and infra-
structure system that
allows rapid deploy-
ment of new technolo-
gies. “Creation of
such system would
require access to new-
age ecosystems. The
technological trans-
formation will also
entail the creation of a
new culture in the or-
ganisation,” it said.
To reduce the de-
pendency on imports,
it is critical for CIL to
reach the one billion
tonnes target, thereby
embarking on a tech-
nological transforma-
tion journey, it said.

Rajkot: Left-arm spin-
ner Kumar Kartikeya
Singh returned a five-
wicket haul after Shub-
ham Sharma hit a grit-
ty unbeaten ton as
Madhya Pradesh re-
corded an emphatic
106-run win over Guja-
rat in their Elite Group
A Ranji Trophy game,
in Rajkot on Sunday.
Madhya Pradesh had
conceded the first in-
nings lead to Gujarat
but the central team
then fought back with
gusto, putting 251 in
their second session
with Shubham scoring
an unbeaten 103.
Kartikeya Singh
(5/34) then spun the
web around the Guja-
rat batsmen, as the
team was shot out for a
meagre 88 in their sec-
ond session in just 37.5
overs.
Gujarat chased a 195-
run target for an out-
right win but none of
their batsmen could
make a substantial con-
tribution as they made
a beeline to the chang-
ing room at the Sau-
rashtra Cricket Asso-
ciation stadium in
Khandheri.
Skipper Priyank
Panchal (5) became
Kartikeya Singh’s first
victim and he soon re-
moved one-down Bhar-
gav Merai (0).

fection as he sent back
Karan Patel and Man-
prit Juneja.
Patel’s patient 27
only delayed the inevi-

fetched them six points.
Shubham (2/7) and
Gaurav Yadav (1/17)
also shared the spoils.

Surat: The airport au-

bighas of land adjacent
to the Surat airport for
aircraft parking. The
demand was made in a
meeting held last week,
where Collector Ayush
Oak, MP CR Patil were
present along with the
District Airport Advi-
sory Committee.
The Airport Author-
ity has demanded more
land for aircraft park-
ing. Collector Ayush
Oak said, “Two-and-a-
half bighas of land
around the airport is
currently under con-
struction. If this land is
acquired, then 24 air-
craft can be parked eas-
ily. Parking was one of
the key issues raised
during the Airport Ad-
visory Committee meet-
ing.”
MP CR Patil and
member of the Airport
Advisory Committee,
has also asked to formu-
late a policy on taxi
fares. He said, taxis can
not afford parking fees,
especially during air
traffic. Thus, to ease the
burden of taxi drivers,
a monthly pass could
perhaps be introduced
according to the time of
the plane or the trip.

Ahmedabad: The 38
convicts in the 2008
Ahmedabad serial
blasts case were
deemed deserving of
the death sentence by a
special court in its or-
der, “as allowing them
to remain in society is
akin to releasing a man-
eater leopard in public
that consumes inno-
cents.”
In the judgement, a
copy of which was
made available on Feb-
ruary 19, the court also
said that in its opinion,
the death sentence will
be reasonable as the
case falls in the “rarest
of the rare” category
.
The special court had
on February 18 sen-
tenced to death 38 mem-
bers of the terror outfit
Indian Mujahideen
(IM) for the Ahmedabad
bombings, which killed
56 people and injured
over 200 on July 26, 2008.
The court also gave life
terms to 11 other IM
convicts in the case.
It was for the first
time in the country that
the maximum number
of death sentences were
handed down by a court
in one go.
“The convicts creat-
ed unrest in a peaceful
society and carried out
anti-national activities
while living here. They
have no respect for the
constitutionally-elect-
ed government at the
Centre and in Gujarat,
and a few believe only
in Allah and not in the
government or the judi-
ciary,” said Special
Judge AR Patel in the
order.
There is no need for
the government to keep
the convicts in jail, es-
pecially those who said
they believed only in
their God and none oth-
ers, the court said, add-
ing there is no jail in the
country that can keep
them lodged forever.
“For the people car-
rying out such terrorist
activities, death sen-
tence is the only option,
for the sake of peace
and safety of the coun-
try and its people,” the
court said about the 38
convicts.
Handing down life
sentences to 11 other
convicts till the end of
their natural life, the
court observed, “They
took part in the conspir-
acy along with the main
conspirators, but their
role in the crime does
not involve death sen-
tence.”

The Maputo city po-

On the security video

could be seen inside the

armed with guns car-

a few minutes before
the kidnapping, the sus-

shortly after, the crime
was committed.
“The police then had
launched a manhunt
that led to the arrest of
one of the gang mem-

that this member was
given a task of scouting
the area and supplying
every detail about the
shopkeeper’s routine to
the kidnappers to ena-

said Muchina, adding
that after the crime, the
suspect returned to his

From this arrest,

  • 1. Pak detains 30 fishermen, 5 boats off Guj coast First India Bureau Ahmedabad: Pakistani authorities captured at least 30 Indian fisher- men off the Porbandar coast in the Arabian Sea on Saturday . A total of five boats were also seized by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) in Por- bandar, Wanakbara, Okha 1, and 2 Mangrol (Gir Somnath). Most of the boats that have been impounded are from Okha and Por- bandar. While the Paki- stan Marine Force has hijacked 20 boats carry- ing120Indianfishermen in the last 25 days, there isresentmentamongthe fishermen over the lack of action from the cen- tralorstategovernment. Currently , around 1,200 boats and 500 fishermen are lodged in Pakistani jails. Priortothis,onFebru- ary10,Okha’s‘Satyavati’ boat was seized by the PMSA from Indian wa- ters off the Porbandar- Pakistan border. Earlier, on January 28, another boat named ‘Tulsi Mai- ya’ was also captured. On January 31, a contin- gent of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel patrolling in the Lakh- patwari Creek area of Bhuj had caught a Paki- staniboattryingtoenter Indian waters. There were four to five Paki- stani fishermen aboard the vessel. The BSF ap- prehendedonePakistani civilian and three Paki- stani boats, while the others managed to flee. The seized boats were searched and none of them were suspicious. Manish Lodhari of the National Fee Forum has demanded the re- leaseof thefishermenin Pakistan’s jails. He said that the main reason for crossing the border by fishermen from both sides is to get a good catch. “Industrial pollu- tion on the sea coast has affected the aquatic life. And, to hunt for good fish, the fishermen sometimes cross bor- ders. It is a complex is- sue and should be ad- dressed as soon as pos- sible,” he added. There was never a time when you and I and all the kings gathered here have not existed and nor will there be a time when we will cease to exist.” —Bhagavad Gita n anti-BJP sen- timent is grow- ing in Telanga- na with Chief Minister K. Chandrashek ar Rao (KCR) leading the charge. His meetings with Chief Min- ister Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party’s Sharad Pawar are being seen as an attempt to stitch up a non- Congress front against the BJP before the 2024 elec- tions. The meeting took place at Thackeray initia- tive. This unity effort ap- pears to be a move inde- pendent of Mamata Baner- jee and Prashant Kishor’s plans for a unified front. While reaching out to re- gional parties, both intend to keep the Congress out of their scheme of things. Could KCR and Mamata find a common meeting ground for a unified oppo- sition front? And a bigger question that looms is whether these regional leaders, including KCR, will be able to rein-in their balloon-sized ambitions in the national interest? There have to be a host of reasons for the Telan- gana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader, who once sided with the BJP in Par- liament, to turn against the BJP and Prime Minis- ter Narendra Modi. One of the reasons clear- ly is the political threat to the TRS. The saffron party is making inroads in Tel- angana and giving KCR pinpricks with remarks on bifurcation of the state that please YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. On Chief Minister KCR’s birthday, the Union Ministry of Road Trans- port issued full-page ad- vertisements announcing variousprojectsinAndhra to dilute the impact ads greeting Rao. KCR has blamed the BJP for not re- leasing funds for the state’s development. KCR must remember that there is no double-engin e gov- ernment there. TELANGANA’S MOVE AGAINST THE BJP There have to be a host of reasons for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader, who once sided with the BJP in Parliament, to turn against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi A or those who thought that Nar- endra Modi doesn’t care for Muslims should revisit the dead- ly floods of Morbi in 1979 when thousands of people lost their lives to this disaster. There was a great risk of epidemic due to rotten bodies. Most of the people living in that area were Mus- lims. Soon after knowing the pathetic condition of the resi- dents, Modi swing into action and took them to relief camp in Rajkot. He took personal care of Muslims and arranged for their sehri during the pious Ramzan month. Modi stayed in the relief camp for 2-3 months and left only after settling them. Meanwhile in New Delhi, Chaudhary Charan Singh took over from Morarji Desai as Prime Minister. But he could not the govern for even 6 months and the experiment of Janta front failed. Fresh elections were held in 1980, bringing In- dira Gandhi back to power. However, a major political event happened on 6th April 1980 when leaders of Jansangh found- ed a political party - Bhartiya Ja- nataParty-whichhasbecomethe largest political party and is pres- ently ruling the country . The first session of BJP was held in Mum- bai where the former Prime Min- ister and where one of the BJP’s founding members Atal Bihari Vajpayeehadfamouslysaid-And- hera Chhatega, Kamal Khilega. In 1981, the country was shak- en up by mass conversion of Dal- its to Muslims at Meenaxipuram in Tamil Nadu. Sangh parivar immediately took cognisance of that and started Ekatm Yatra across the country . This embold- ened Hindus and during these yatra, representativ es of Sangh parivar connected more than 6 crore Hindus. Narendra Modi led this campaign in Gujarat giv- ing new dimensions to his lead- ership skills. Kaushik Mehta of VHP be- lieves that the concept of this yatra was of Narendra Modi only . “Every citizen of the coun- try is one. Two raths were taken out in the country simultane- ously putting kumbh of Gangaji and photo of Mother India to- gether. This spread a meaning- ful message to Hindus,” he said. Meanwhile,PrimeMinisterIn- dira Gandhi was assassinated on 31st October, 1984 and Congress rompedhomewithgreatmajority ridingonthesympathyvotes. The newly formed BJP ended up win- ning just two seats. In the next year, assembly elections were heldinGujaratandCongresswon 149 out of 182 seats while BJP could manage to win just 11 seats. This set the alarm bells on and Sangh started sending pracha- raks to strengthen the BJP . On6thDecember1986,pracha- rak Narendra Modi was sent to BJP by the then Sarsanghchal ak Bala Saheb Devras. Modi, who was working selflessly for the Sangh for last one and half dec- ades, found a new path to trudge. Soon after coming into BJP, in 1989 Modi had a tough challenge ahead which he turned into an opportunity. There was an elec- tion of Ahmedabad Nagar Nig- am. Modi took over the entire responsibility of poll strategy and publicity . He gave the slogan – ‘Bas ab Bhajapa’. That slogan played an important role in re- vival of BJP and changed the face of electoral politics. People related with the slogan and the political acceptability increased simultaneous ly . After the great win at Ahmedabad Nagar Nigam, Modi’s role in the party gained prominence and he was entrust- ed with the responsibility of Or- ganising Secretary in Gujarat. Modi took out yatras to connect with the people of the state. While he carried out ‘Nyay yatra’ championing the cause of farm- ers in 1987, he also took out Lok Shakti yatra in support of tribals in 1988. In the same year, Modi went on one more yatra - Kailash Mansarovar yatra, which was organised by External Affairs ministry for the first time. Soon after he returned from the yatra, he came to know about his fa- ther’s ill health. He immediately went to Vadnagar, only to see his father taking his last breath. Modi’s father probably was wait- ing for the last sight of his son. However, undeterred by his father’s demise, Narendra Modi left his home the next day for a journey meant for nation building. Interestingly , when the chief minister visit- ed Radhanpur, he was accompanied by Other Backward Class (OBC) leader Alpesh Thakor and the Bharatiya Jana- ta Party’s old guard and OBC leader Shankar Chaudhary was missing from his convoy . First India Bureau Ahmedabad: Rumour mill suggests that the relative of a national Congress leader from Madhya Pradesh, who is in Gujarat, is likely to join the Bharatiya Ja- nata Party (BJP). He presented central Guja- rat and was also elected for the state assembly for one term. The leader is also a close friend of Jayrajsinh Parmar, the former Gujarat Con- gress spokesperson, who is all set to join the ruling party . Three days ago, Par- mar decided to leave the party as he was dissatis- fied with the party’s performance in polls and inactivity of its leaders. Parmar re- signed from Congress after the party did not grant him a ticket in the past four state assembly and Lok Sabha elec- tions. He plans to join the BJP on February 22, as per an announcement he made on the social media platform Twitter. “With the blessings of my family goddess Shri Harsiddh Bhavani Mataji and village god- dess Shri Ajay Mata and my guru, I am join- ing Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday 22-02- 2022 at 11 am at Shri Ka- malam. Jai Hind.” A leader represent- ing the Kshatriya com- munity in North Guja- rat, Parmar took the decision to quit Con- gress, after desperate efforts to secure a poll ticket. Now, he plans to join the BJP with 150 of his followers and/or co- workers. Parmar also in- formed media persons that two more senior leaders from the Con- gress party are plan- ning to switch parties on February 21. It is to be noted that sources indicate that two tribal leaders from Congress are likely to join the BJP. First India Bureau Ahmedabad: A recent- ly held controversial elocution competition held at a Valsad school where one of the topics was on Mahatma Gan- dhi’s killer Nathuram Godse, created a stir. Another vandalism in- cident involving dam- age to a Gandhi statue has grabbed the atten- tion of renowned Gan- dhians. First India spoke with a few of them to ascertain whether attempts are being made to tarnish Bapu’s image to an ex- tent that Godse is pro- jected superior to him. Surat-based activist and Gandhian Uttam Parmar addressed ‘an- ti-Gandhi’ events held in the state recently and said, “They were intentionally pro- grammed to tarnish the image of Gandhi.” “For the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Mahatma Gan- dhi is still a threat even years after his death. The current political environment is condu- cive for the Sangh, to spread their agenda and gradually replace Gandhi with their fa- voured people. The Manuvadi mentality of RSS is making these events happen, which are being reported from many places now,” asserted Parmar. A staunch Gandhi supporter, he added, “The Gandhian ideol- ogy will be more con- solidated by such ef- forts. One can kill Gan- dhi, but cannot ever kill his ideology.” He blamed the Manuvadi mentality and ex- plained that it was mainly against equali- ty and extending equal rights to women and Dalits, which was advo- cated by Gandhi. Meanwhile, Rashtri- ya Yuva Sangathan Convener Vishwajeet Roy attributed anti- Gandhi events to the intention of spreading hate among some peo- ple. “Even while doing that, thoughts of Ma- hatma Gandhi hamper them. They blame Gan- dhi for everything and think that in this era of social media domi- nance, things can easi- ly be exploited. But no, this will further en- hance Gandhian thoughts,” he said. Roy added that it is disheartening to see this happening in Gu- jarat—Mahatma Gan- dhi’s home ground. “This is called the ruf- fian’s way of tarnish- ing Bapu’s image. They want to create an illu- sion, but while trying to achieve that, there will be curiosity among the people to know Gandhi more. He can never be erased,” add- ed Roy. Police officers believe in ‘giving back’ handsome returns First India Bureau Gandhinagar: As po- lice officers get trans- ferred to other cities with dizzying regulari- ty , there are times when they choose not to move with their families. This means that they have to live in hotels as they prefer them to empty apartments. In deals struck with hotel owners, they receive free accommodation in their establishments, and in return, ensure that events and/or so- cial functions are or- ganized there. This has enabled a few hotel businessestobookhefty profits amid the COV- ID-19 pandemic. According to the sources within the po- lice department, two police officers stationed in western part of Ahmedabad have been living in hotels. Howev- er, they stay here free of chargeandtheonlypay- ment they give is by en- suring the hotels book events/social functions. Hotel owners had no complaints and were happy that the officers werestayingintheirho- tels. This was because when other hotels and restaurant owners were crying foul that their businesses had been ad- versely affected due to nCoV , these hotel own- ers were literally ‘print- ing’ money . As hotels and banquet halls re- ceived event cancella- tion calls, these hotels were operating at full capacity with several event bookings, said sources. Apparently, there was no set limit for the number of guests at events held at these ho- tels. Sources said, “If any family booked rooms in these hotels --even when there was a restriction of 150 guests-- more than 500 guests attended social events organized there. When other hospitality businesses were suffer- ing losses, these hotels booked huge profits, all thanks to the police of- ficers who had been liv- ing in them free of cost. Commenting on the re- turns given by the offic- ers, an Ahmedabad- based hotelier said, “These (police) officers have given back hand- some gifts to hotel own- ers, for giving them free rooms to live in.” SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP lll Hotels where they get free rooms to live in have cashed in big cheques for social events held there, courtesy of the policemen CM Bhupendra Patel (in blue kurta) at Rani Ki Vav on Sunday. He turned into a Bharati- ya Janata Party (BJP) party worker in his youth and has been a generous donor to both the party and the po- lice ever since. With claims to be one of the highest tax- payers in his ward, Sakhiya joined RSS when he was 13-year- old,thenJanSanghfol- lowed by the BJP. “When former a BJP national leader filed his first nomination for the Lok Sabha in 2014, I personally do- nated Rs1,01,00,000 to the party fund,” Jagji- van told First India. This was not the case before. For the past four years, this CP (Manoj Agarwal) has crossed all limits and his acts of hooligan- ism are out in the open now. Taking money from both the victims and the accused had become his routine, he asserted. Calling for Agarw- al’s suspension and an investigation into the corruption allega- tions, Sakhiya said, “I demand suspension of this officer and all those involved. Official cases should be filed against all of them.” Meanwhile, on Feb- ruary 18, Jagjivan pro- duced more evidence supporting his claims that included a video of two police officers handing his nephew Rs4.5 lakh cash at Di- wanpara police chow- ki. The exchange hap- pened a day after the allegations were made public. However, Jagji- van questioned the money’s origin. “Where did the cash come from? If it had come from the ac- cused, I would have had to go through the courts to get it re- leased. Also, there should a muddamal pavti signed by the ac- cused. These acts are against the law and must be probed,” he said. If they are proven to hold substance, the offend- ing students face ter- mination from the school. Sashwat (name changed), native of Sanali village in Kunkavav Vadia taluka of Amreli district, was asked by senior stu- dents to wash their laundry. He was beaten up with belts for refus- ing to comply with their order. The young- ster has alleged that an argument broke out be- tween the seniors a few days ago over waste on one of the senior’s beds. And, using the in- cident as an excuse, the seniors had been pres- suring him to wash their clothes for the past week. Four days ago, when Sashwat refused to wash their clothes again, a group of sen- iors beat him with belts. After the beating, he fled from the school hostel and returned home, where he in- formed his parents about the ragging inci- dent. Shockingly, the hos- tel warden was not even aware that Sash- wat had not been living in the hostel for the past three days. In fact, he came to know about it only when his par- ents informed him and complained about the ragging. A written applica- tion has also been sub- mitted by Sashwat’s parents to Kunkavav Vadia police station, but an official First In- formation Report (FIR) has not been lodged yet, said relatives. However, the school’s principal has denied ragging even took place on campus. “There is no possibility of rag- ging, as we have only had online classes for the last two years, as per COVID-19 guide- lines. And so, there is no question of students living at the hostel,” claimed Vijay Kumar, principal of Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya. However, he also added, “An inquiry committee has been constituted to look into the allega- tions. Strict action will be taken against the seniors, if the allega- tions are proven to be correct.” First India Bureau Vadodara: Three persons were in- jured after a por- tion of an under- c o n s t r u c t i o n house collapsed on them in Manjal- pur area of the city on Sunday morning. While locals rescued two people before the arrival of fire emergency servic- es, the homeowner was rescued by the team when it reached the scene. According to re- ports, the house owner, Bhupen- dra Patel, and two other members of his family were trapped in the rubble. “At around 10.30 am, we received a call about a house collapse and dis- patched rescue teams to the scene. The two injured people were mov- ing, and locals also assisted in their rescue. However, the house’s owner was trapped deep inside but we suc- ceeded in rescuing him. He was trans- ported to a nearby hospital for treat- ment,” said fire of- ficial Nikunj Azad. First India Bureau Ahmedabad: On Sat- urday, a 12-year-old girl who had been missing for a few days was discovered at Kalupur railway station in the city. Ac- cording to police, the girl eloped with a youth and is current- ly undergoing medi- cal examination. During primary questioning, Suhasini (name changed) said she began exchanging messages with her neighbour on a social media platform a few months ago. After regu- lar chats and in-person meetings, she fell in love with him. The minor also told officials that she en- tered into a physical relationship two months ago. Wanting to be together, they both fled to Ludhiana on Feb- ruary 15, after making the choice to leave their homes. Two days after their arrival in Ludhi- ana, Suhasini began feeling homesick and insisted on returning home. The same even- ing the couple started for Ahmedabad. After reaching the city on February 19, the youth dropped the minor at Kalupur railway sta- tion and left. The girl’s family had reported her missing at Satellite police station on February 15. The girl had not returned home from school, according to them. But as Suhasi- ni’s phone was turned off, it had been difficult for the police to trace her whereabouts. On February 17, the family had received a call from the girl informing them that she was in Ludhi- ana and wanted to re- turn home. Then she called him from Kalu- pur station where her boyfriend had left her. Satellite police have begun searching for the youth. First India Bureau Gandhinagar: The state witnessed a fall in number of COVID-19 daily infections on Sun- day, as the state report- ed a total of 377 cases. Nine deaths were re- ported, of which, five occurred in Vadodara, two in Jamnagar, and one each in Surat and Bhavnagar. With the new cases, the case tally has now reached 12,20,562 and death toll to 10,896, since the pandemic hit in March, 2020. The highest number of cases was reported in Ahmedabad (136), fol- lowed by Vadodara (72). It is to be noted that with a decrease in the infection rate, not a sin- gle new case was report- ed in seven districts. First India Bureau Surat: At least 400 peo- ple of Indira Nagar in Udhana area of the city have been living in the dark for five days, as the Dakshin Guja- rat Vig Company Ltd (DGVCL) has discon- nected their power connection. According to DGV- CL officials, the elec- trical connections were removed follow- ing a complaint lodged by the land- owner. On the other hand, its occupants said that they were given this land 60 years ago and have re- sided there with their families ever since. They copped to pay- ing their electricity bills and municipal taxes on time. Discon- tinuing the electricity supply is just a means to harass them, al- leged the occupants. When applications for new power connec- tions were filed, offi- cials of the DGVCL had checked all the documents, and after confirmation, meters were allotted. Speaking on behalf of his client, advocate Nisar Shaikh said, “This property was purchased by Mahavir Meratwala in 2017, who had approached the court in February 2020, to clear encroach- ment. However, the lockdown delayed the process. In April 2021, Meratwala asked DG- VCL to disconnect the electricity supply, and action on that applica- tion was taken on Tuesday . However, it is against the law to dis- connect basic facilities when the issue is still pending in court. Offi- cials have to take prior permission before tak- ing any action.” Welt marks on the victim’s back. Rescue op underway at the site. KCR has blamed the BJP for not re- leasing funds for the state’s development. KCR must remember that there is no double-engine gov- ernment there. This embold- ened Hindus and during these yatra, representatives of Sangh parivar connected more than 6 crore Hindus. On6thDecember1986,pracha- rak Narendra Modi was sent to BJP by the then Sarsanghchalak Bala Saheb Devras. People related with the slogan and the political acceptability increased simultaneously . Point- ing to the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts, which claimed 56 lives and left over 200 people injured, he said some parties are sym- pathetic to terrorists. Speaking at a rally in Hardoi, he accused the erstwhile Uttar Pradesh government of seeking to withdraw cases against terrorists. “The attitude of the leaders of the Samajwa- di Party and the Con- gress has been even more alarming. These people address a terror- ist like Osama as ‘ji’. These people shed tears over the elimination of terroristsinBatlaHouse encounter,” he said. “Similarly , in 14 cases of terrorist attacks in Uttar Pradesh, the Sa- majwadi government had given orders to withdraw the cases from many terrorists. These people were set- ting off blast after blast, and the Samajwadi Par- ty government was not even allowing these ter- rorists to be prosecut- ed,” he added. The BJP has tradi- tionally accused the Congress of appease- ment politics because of its sizeable Muslim support base. Once this support shifted to the Samajwadi Party, the barbs got sharper. Campaign in the run- up to this election was sharply polarised, with senior state leaders and the Chief Minister ac- cusing Akhilesh Ya- dav’s party of being supporters of Pakistan and its founder Muham- mad Ali Jinnah. The Bharatiya Janata Party may not be that comfortably placed in the Presidential elec- tion which is likely to be conducted in June-July 2022, as the President is indirectly elected by an electoral college con- sisting of the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and the assemblies. The electoral colleges comprises 776 MPs of both the Houses and 4,120 MLAs of all the states and Union Terri- tories. The electoral col- lege has 1,098,903 votes, and a majority is 549,452 votes. As far as the value of votes is concerned, Uttar Pradesh has the highestnumberof votes, approximately83,824fol- lowed by Maharashtra and West Bengal. The BJP has a brute majority in the assem- blies of UP and Uttara- khand and any reduc- tion of seats will put the game in the opposition camp as the Chief Min- isters of different re- gional parties are try- ing to join hands. If they join hands and put up a joint candi- date, the BJP will find it difficult to get its nominee e l e c t e d . The only way would be a divi- sion in the opposition camp which may be a difficult task. After West Bengal Chief Min- ister Mamata Banerjee who is trying to expand her party, Trinamool Congress’ footprints at the national level, Tel- angana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) had a meeting with Maha- rashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray . Not only is the Mum- bai meeting important but KCR is also meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Min- ister M.K. Stalin and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Even Mamata Ba- nerjee is likely to travel to Hyderabad to meet KCR. He has the support of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda who could be another possible can- didate for President. However the Chief Ministerstryingtounite en bloc is not a good sign for the Congress which may get isolated in the opposition while the BJP has to search for a consensus candi- date for the Presiden- tial poll. K C R ’ s new initia- tive is to save his home turf as the BJP is ex- panding its base in Tel- angana. He is being forced to take on the BJP due to domestic po- litical compulsions, oth- erwise the party had been bailing out the BJP on key legislation in the Upper House since 2014. The southern states and Maharashtra ac- count for more than 200 Lok Sabha seats and al- most half of the elector- alcollegewhichcouldbe crucial in the next Presi- dential poll. If the re- gionalpartiesteamup,it will be unlikely that the BJP will have its way in the choice of President. Thus the electoral outcome in the five states which include UP will impact the presi- dential election. If the opposition puts up a candidate like NCP supremo Sharad Pawar who is capable of mus- tering support from oth- ers like the Trinamool Congress, the BJD, the TRS,theYSRCP ,theCPI- M, the CPI and the other parties, then the BJP will have a tough task ahead of it. —Agencies How Assembly polls will impact Presidential and RS elections POLITICAL INTRICACIES Patna: Lalu Prasad’s RJD has slammed its doors shut on the pos- sibility of any under- standing with the Con- gress, its estranged ally, for elections to 24 seats of the legislative coun- cil in Bihar. A participating (par) insurance policy pro- vides both guaranteed and non-guaranteed benefits to policyhold- ers in the form of bo- nus or dividend pay- outs, while a non-par- ticipating (non-par) policy typically pro- vides guaranteed ben- efits to policyholders, but they do not receive profit or dividend pay- ments. Currently, LIC just has 4% of its new busi- ness premium coming in from non-participat- ing policies, while the same is for its the top five private sector peers range from 20 to 45%. —PTI PARTICIPATING (PAR) POLICY GOLD EXPORT UP New Delhi: The gov- ernment’s revenue col- lection from telecom services will be signifi- cantly higher than the projection of `52,806.36 crore made in the un- ion budget after adding the collection from the proposed spectrum auction, a top telecom department official said. The government has lowered its revenue estimate from the tele- com segment to `52,806 crore for the next finan- cial year, according to the budget document. “Some people are making advance pay- ments and since spec- trum auction is pro- posed we expect this to go northwards. Madhya Pradesh had conceded the first in- nings lead to Gujarat but the central team then fought back with gusto, putting 251 in their second session with Shubham scoring an unbeaten 103. Kartikeya Singh (5/34) then spun the web around the Guja- rat batsmen, as the team was shot out for a meagre 88 in their sec- ond session in just 37.5 overs. Gujarat chased a 195- run target for an out- right win but none of their batsmen could make a substantial con- tribution as they made a beeline to the chang- ing room at the Sau- rashtra Cricket Asso- ciation stadium in Khandheri. The demand was made in a meeting held last week, where Collector Ayush Oak, MP CR Patil were present along with the District Airport Advi- sory Committee. The Airport Author- ity has demanded more land for aircraft park- ing. Collector Ayush Oak said, “Two-and-a- half bighas of land around the airport is currently under con- struction. If this land is acquired, then 24 air- craft can be parked eas- ily. Parking was one of the key issues raised during the Airport Ad- visory Committee meet- ing.” MP CR Patil and member of the Airport Advisory Committee, has also asked to formu- late a policy on taxi fares. He said, taxis can not afford parking fees, especially during air traffic. Thus, to ease the burden of taxi drivers, a monthly pass could perhaps be introduced according to the time of the plane or the trip. Airport authority seeks 2.5 bighas of land for aircraft parking space First India Bureau Ahmedabad: The 38 convicts in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case were deemed deserving of the death sentence by a special court in its or- der, “as allowing them to remain in society is akin to releasing a man- eater leopard in public that consumes inno- cents.” In the judgement, a copy of which was made available on Feb- ruary 19, the court also said that in its opinion, the death sentence will be reasonable as the case falls in the “rarest of the rare” category . The special court had on February 18 sen- tenced to death 38 mem- bers of the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) for the Ahmedabad bombings, which killed 56 people and injured over 200 on July 26, 2008. The court also gave life terms to 11 other IM convicts in the case. It was for the first time in the country that the maximum number of death sentences were handed down by a court in one go. “The convicts creat- ed unrest in a peaceful society and carried out anti-national activities while living here. They have no respect for the constitutionally-elect- ed government at the Centre and in Gujarat, and a few believe only in Allah and not in the government or the judi- ciary,” said Special Judge AR Patel in the order. There is no need for the government to keep the convicts in jail, es- pecially those who said they believed only in their God and none oth- ers, the court said, add- ing there is no jail in the country that can keep them lodged forever. “For the people car- rying out such terrorist activities, death sen- tence is the only option, for the sake of peace and safety of the coun- try and its people,” the court said about the 38 convicts. Handing down life sentences to 11 other convicts till the end of their natural life, the court observed, “They took part in the conspir- acy along with the main conspirators, but their role in the crime does not involve death sen- tence.” Judge compares their advent into society to releasing man-eating leopard in pronouncement REPARATIONS Family members of blast victims celebrate the court’s judgement. —PHOTO BY HANIF SINDHI First India Bureau Maputo (Mozam- bique)/ Anand : A 56-year-old business- man Bharatkumar Dhanji Tapu was kid- napped from his bottle store in downtown Ma- puto, Mozambique, on February 12. But a few minutes before the kidnapping, the sus- pect left, returning shortly after, the crime was committed. “The police then had launched a manhunt that led to the arrest of one of the gang mem- bers. It came to light that this member was given a task of scouting the area and supplying every detail about the shopkeeper’s routine to the kidnappers to ena- ble the kidnapping,” said Muchina, adding that after the crime, the suspect returned to his job. From this arrest, Muchina hopes that the police will gather the necessary clues, which might lead to the where- abouts of the other criminals involved.
